The 2013 Toyota Rav4 has no dash lights around the speedometer in the daytime. The speedometer sits back in the dash and you can not see your speed at a glance. Therefore you can find yourself going faster than the safe speed limit. At night it lights up and is fine. This is a safety issue.
2013 Toyota rav 4. Consumer writes in regards to a defect in the instrument panel lighting. The consumer stated he was unable to see the instrument panel during daylight hours. The dealer informed the consumer the display panel back light only illuminated when the headlights were on. Even if the headlights were turned on during the day, the instrument panel was only marginally illuminated and the brightness control thumbwheel had very little effect.
Navigation screen difficult to see in most lighting conditions. Must take more than brief glance at nav screen to determine freeway markings, intersections, street names or search for radio station. Has possibility for becoming great distraction.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Rav4. The contact noticed that the transmission would repeatedly slip out of gear without warning. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the on-board computer needed to be replaced because it was defective. Immediately after the repair, the failure resurfaced and the engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Rav4. While driving approximately 10 mph on normal road conditions, the gear shifter failed to function properly. The warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and it was discovered that the main brain of the computerized system was the cause of the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were unavailable.

My 2006 Rav4 has daytime running lights (drl) along with the optitron dash (lcd dash that is lit whenever the car is running - as opposed to the dashboard being lit only when the headlights are turned on). On the Rav4 Toyota only provides a small icon to let you know when your headlights are on. With the optitron dash and daytime running lights I am able to get into my car at night, see the lighted dash and light coming from the headlights and erroneously believe that my full nighttime headlights are on (instead of the daytime running lights). The problem with this setup is my tail lights are not on. I feel that this is a safety issue as running w/o tail lights at night could cause rear-end collisions. Rather than provide Rav4 owners with a small dashboard indicator showing when the headlights are lit, Toyota should include; either an indicator that shows when the headlights are not on, or include auto-on headlights for vehicles with drl and optitron dashboards.
