36 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2013

During rush hour, a vehicle before me abruptly stopped. To avoid from hitting them I swerved to the left hitting a wall divider when the front left wheel caved in having me and my family swerve all the way to the right into another sound wall. What I tried to do was hit the brake before going head on into the wall but the gas pedal was stuck causing us to accelerate into the wall. Luckily there were shrubs and bushes to help the car go into a slow as we slid across the wall. I dont know why the gas pedal decide to get stuck and accelerate us into the wall but im hearing from other Sequoia owners that they have had the same problem with their pedals and that needs to be checked out as soon as possible.

37 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

Trac off, vsc trac lights came on as the rear wheel locked up for a sec . Loss of power , vehicle pulled hard to the right almost causing collision with 18 wheeler on highway.

38 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2012

Vehicle skid control simply engages at normal speeds and normal driving conditions. Hard grinding, pulling to the right or left and almost no braking. Yes, they recalled 2003 to 05 but not 2002? why? it's the exact same problem. Someone will be injured at some point and in fact, there are some accounts of injury. In my family's case, this has happened while driving about 8 times since we purchased this from a private dealer and after we had a certified mechanic check it out. This is on Toyota. Please investigate this. This is total negligence and disregard for individual safety.

39 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2012

While driving at 50 mph on a flat concrete paved road in dry conditions, the slippery wet lamp lit and the alarm sounded for approximately 10 seconds while the abs brakes engaged on. The lamp flashed until the brakes released and the vsc trac and trac off lamps illuminated and remained on after restarting the vehicle. This occurrence happened immediately after receiving the vehicle from the Toyota service department in which the skid control ecu was replaced for $770. 79. This is a repeated occurrence of the problems. I delivered the vehicle back to Toyota to have it repaired. The technician informed me that the brake booster assembly would need to be replaced to resolve the problem. The maintenance cost $1,606. 24 and they kept if for 5 days.

40 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

I was a stop light with the brakes firmly pressed down when the vehicle lurched forward. It felt as if someone had rear-ended me, however, there was no one behind me. Now the vsc lights are lit up on the dashboard display and it is lurching and power surging at random.

41 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2012

Vsc light came on and has not gone off. . Dealership says its the computer and that 2003 and later have bee recalled for this problem but not 2002 ??? vsc not able to activate at all.

42 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2012

Was accelerating onto the freeway today and it felt as if the left brakes came on along with a screeching sound and it made me swerve left. I was able to avoid swerving into merging traffic but I nearly crashed. Over the last week the vsc off lights have started going on and off and after reviewing some literature on line it seems that hundreds of others have had the same type of problem. The 2003 Sequoia was actually recalled for this same thing. Very dangerous and now I will have to contact the dealer to see about it getting fixed before someone is killed. I have two young children and this really pisses me off. Even if there is not a recall I should have been made aware of the danger I was putting myself in. I have been happy with my truck for 8 years but after this incident and seeing what others have gone through I will never buy another Toyota!!!.

44 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

The vsc/trac activation and system warning lights came on while the system intermittently activated, locking up/letting go of the right rear tire while on dry level pavement and driving forward. I took it to a shop, which found a problem in a steering sensor, "the computer" and possibly a wheel sensor. They suggested that the system be disabled until it could be troubleshot in more detail. I had them disable it so that it could be driven without the danger of a wheel locking up on the highway. It is still disabled, with dash system warning lights on during operation.

45 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while driving 75 mph, brakes locked up, and the steering wheel became locked while the "traction control " warning light became illuminated. The contact loss control of the vehicle. The contact managed to regain control of the vehicle and coasted over to an emergency lane. The contact then shifted the gears to into park. The contact then shifted the vehicle back into drive and continued to proceed to the route. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic for a diagnosis and the mechanic stated that the rotors and brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Gb.

2002 Toyota Sequoia brake slippery and shake the vehicle, then both vsc and trac off warning lights are on.

47 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2010

This is a repeat occurrence of a problem with the vsc trac and trac off systems. Repeatedly, the lights will come on and remains on until the vehicle is restarted. Again, when I took it the Toyota service department, I was informed that they were unable to replicate the codes. No resolution.

48 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

While driving through parking lot and applying brakes, the vsc trac and trac off lights came on and remained on while the vehicle was on. After restarting the vehicle, the lights would not replicate. When taken to the dealer, the technician informed me to bring it in when the lights were on because they were unable to pull the codes.

49 Service Brakes problem

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while depressing the brake pedal, the brakes would not engage. The dealer advised the central computer system would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN and failure mileage were not available. The current mileage was 50,000.

50 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

My Toyota Sequoia vehicle skid control lights light up at various times. I also hear a grinding sound periodically and lose all acceleration. I have researched this and there appears to be a trend with these vehicles. I am concerned with the safety of the vehicle and acceleration/braking.

51 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Vsc, seat belt and check engine light randomly started coming on about 130,000 mi. Tansky Toyota service did brake work, the lights were off for several weeks but then would come off and on. We ignored it because we had just had it in to the dealer, it seemed to be a nuisance in an older vehicle but not dangerous. About 165,000 miles the vehicle developed a sudden loss of power in traffic. We speculated it was the lever that shifts from 4wd to 2wd. The dealer replaced that for $400, the lights were off for 3 days, then back on. Now, we have had maybe five instances of sudden loss of power. This total loss of power usually occurs after driving 10 minutes locally, and after stopping at a light. Turning the ignition off, and restarting fixes the issue. Tansky Toyota acts like they have never heard of such a thing, but when I look online every Toyota blog is full of people just like me. I know it is an old vehicle. I just want to know how much will it cost me to really fix this problem. We have started only using this vehicle for non-critical driving locally.

52 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia limited that has an error message on safety equipment. Vehicle stability control (vsc) and abs (anti-lock-brake) system lights are constantly on, causing me concern. I see Toyota initiated a recall on the 2003 model for this concern, yet not on my model year? I see numerous blogs with this concern as I search for solutions. This was a very expensive vehicle that I purchased due to the reputation of this company for building safe automobiles, I am disappointed in Toyota's lack of response. Please help if you have the ability/authority. Thank you.

53 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

Vsc, abs, traction control and brake warning instrument lights on. Abs and traction control and vsc are inoperable due to a computer malfunction. This is an extremely common issue with first generation Sequoias. My specific codes are c1241 and c1203. Toyota told me I will need a new computer to controls those systems at a 921 dollar expense. These issues have been ongoing since 2009.

54 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2009

Failure of the abs skid contol system on a 2002 toyata Sequoia.

55 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

When braking at high speeds, you can feel front brake vibrate. I took the car to dealership, they stated that there is a technical service bulletin for this issue, but it is not a recall. They are aware that the brake system is too small to handle the load of the vehicle and will only rectify (by upgrading entire braking system) if it is still under manufacturer's warranty. My rotors are warped because of this and I can't afford $4800 to fix their poor workmanship (design). Help me hold them responsible for this potential safety issue!.

56 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2008

Defective vsc computer in 2002 which controls anti-lock & skid control. Toyota refuses to acknowledge problem and repair under warranty.

57 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

I have to have the brake system serviced every 2000 miles because of the vibrating when braking. The Toyota dealer said "they all do this and you have no warranty coverage or recall notice, it is your responsibility". Seems the brake system is not proper for the size of the vehicle.

58 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

(1) the dashboard lights for abs, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2) the abs and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3) technician at marin Toyota in san rafael, CA stated this was a common failure of the 2002 Sequoia. (4) searching online forums and the NHTSA complaint database also show this a common problem. (5) our family needs to be safe in this car. I hope something can be done.

59 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

"vsc/trac" warning lights come on and stay on, and car tries to go back/forward at the same time. I bought this car used with 66,000 miles on it, and problem is chronic. Dealer says they can't recreate the problem. I looked online and there are lots of problems with this in Toyota Sequoias. Date of most recent incident is recorded below.

60 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2006

During the past few months 'vsc trac" ,"vsc off","slip or skid","abs",lights is going off while driving at low speeds like making turns and trying to accelerate from stop, even though the pavement is dry this happens every time ever since, brakes automatically apply causing the car to cut off or prevent the car from accelerating thus results in not able to control the car, there were instances that making turns is very dangerous due to the fact that the vehicle behind you can hit you due to the fact that failure to accelerate when needed because the abs/vsc systems override you from accelerating by pressing the gas pedal, this seems to be a common complaint in online forums like edmunds. Com tudrasolutions. Com, and there was a discussion in there that someone's car with the vsc failure caught on fire, pls investigate.

61 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2006

2002 Toyota Sequoia the consumer stated a noise was coming from the brakes and the problem was never fixed.

62 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2004

2002 Toyota Sequoia has been operating since @ 62,000 miles with a non-functioning vsc/abs system. See that this has not yet been officially recalled, but can find all kinds of info and complaints on the web about this issue. Dashboard lit up with all relative warning lights & vehicle has no abs nor vsc functionality. How could this important safety features well documented, chronic failure not be recalled? it is not exclusive to the 2002 model year either. This is very inappropriate. How many people have to die or get injured before this well documented safety equipment failure is responsibly addressed with a recall. I hope my complaint helps the tally towards this recall. Consumers of this vehicle have bought it with a critical safety system that fails. Toyota must be made to rectify this product safety and quality issue!.

63 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. When I brake the front end vibrates almost until a complete stop. The problem is persistent and I'm concerned because it ultimately results in longer time to stop and reduced braking ability.

64 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2002

I have owned my Sequoia for years and the approximate mileage is around 122,000 miles. I purchased it brand new and the first time I had an issue with the traction control was around 2005. I took it to the dealership and explained to them what happened. I was driving down the road and my speed was around 40 miles per hour. The weather was sunny and the roads were dry. I ran across a rough patch in the road and all of a sudden the wheels locked up, there was this awful screeching sound, and the steering became hard. It was like I had no control over the vehicle. Next thing I knew, the skid traction control lights were on. After I turned the vehicle off and restarted it, it looks like it had reset itself. Of course, the dealership could find nothing wrong. This has occurred again through the years and each time I take it in for service, I complain about the same problem. Today I have it in for service again and mentioned it yet again. I asked if they could just disconnect the skid traction control because I have come close several times to losing control of the vehicle. The service manager explained to me they could not disconnect it. Well, the way I figure it, Toyota will wait until after someone is killed or badly injured and they are sued before they will do anything. I have contacted Toyota America to no avail as well as the ntsb.

65 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2002

We have a 2002 Sequoia, not long after we bought it the vsc and trac off light started coming on, and the booster assy was replaced by our local Toyota dealer. We have had to replace the brakes or parts of the brakes three times, 8/21/02, 3/11/03, and 5/3/03, costing some where close to $1000. 00. On June 6th, I took the Sequoia into Toyota for a service check and was told that everything was fine. 3 weeks later we felt that there was something wrong with the brakes again, and called Toyota motor corp. They notified the local dealership, and the brakes were replaced for free. Now today my vsc and trac off light started coming on again.

66 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2002

Water inside marker light covers when raining. Rubbng noise from rear wheels. Center wheel cap was tightened.
