36 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

Recently, my 01 Sequoia has been making a loud metal-like grinding noise coming from the front end of the car. Sounded like it came from the engine or the tires. This caused the car to become unstable on the road and it was swerving, the vsc trac light and vsc off light flashed and beeped rapidly, and worst thing of all was that the brakes did not work either. The more I put pressure on the brakes, the more the metal grinding noise was intensified. Felt like the engine was going to be dropped in the middle of the road or the tires were scraped to the bone. Problem first happened in April, but thought it was nothing because as fast as it came out of nowhere, it quickly went away also. However, 2 weeks ago, my husband and my son were in my car and it happened again. This time it lasted longer and my husband had to try his best to control the vehicle because it was swerving and shaking so bad, and the loud grinding noise was back. We kept the car in the garage for a week in hopes that it will "go away. " today, 5/16/12, as I'm driving at 50mph it happened again. Thankfully, there were no cars behind me, and just a truck a little ways ahead of me. Because I was driving at a speed of 55mph, it was very difficult to stop. I put pressure on my brakes to no avail because the more I tried to push the brakes, the louder the noise was and the more the car was shaking. This is one of the most terrifying events in my life because I saw that I was approaching the back of the truck fast and I couldn't stop, I tried to pull to the side but there were no room because the sides were just guard rails. At that point, I put more pressure on my brakes because I didn't wanna be killed or hurt anyone else, so my car finally started to slowed down. The scariest part was that I could not brake. The more I applied my brakes, the louder the noise, and the more the car was shaking.

37 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

I noticed the vsc trac lights stayed on. The vehicle appears to drive fine for a while, then loses power. Dealer could not find any codes and reset it. How it does it all the time mostly about the 2 or 3 day after unhooking the battery. After doing my own research online I discovered that many Sequoia owners have experienced the same issue, but Toyota has refused to do a recall. This issue with vsc trac is a huge safety concern. Through my research I discovered that the vehicle could lose power at any time, and many owners state they hear a grinding noise as the vehicle pulls to the right or left. They recalled the 2003, what about us, a friend had a new computer epu put in at $3000 and did it again in 6 months. . . Toyota knows about this and other problems. . . We need a recall or have it fixed.

38 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/11/2010

My 2001 Toyota Sequoia traction control system/vehicle stability control system (vsc) or anti lock braking system (abs) has failed. This problem has just started to occur summer 2010. The problem is an intermittent ratcheting or grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle which causes the wheels and steering to vibrate immensely and have feelings of lost control while driving. This has occurred at all different road speeds, specifically it has occurred while I was driving at full highway speed of 70 mph. The reason I mention both the vsc and the abs, is that these two systems are interworked for control, and at this time it could be either or both which are failed.

40 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/08/2009

I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia that has been regularly serviced at a Toyota dealership and has had no abs brake issues until this incident. Abruptly as I was driving, all the vsc/trac lights on the dashboard came on, there was a grinding noise under the car and the car came to a halt. I took the car to the dealer the next day (as it happened on a Sunday) and was told this was a known defect in Sequoias, but as the car was past it's warranty period it would cost me $1800 to fix. If this is a known defect that has the capability of causing a serious accident because of the abruptness of the issue while driving, I don't understand why this is not a recall issue. Will it take someone having a fatal crash because of this to get some action on this issue?.

41 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

The contact owns 2003 Toyota Sequoia. While driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions and applying pressure to the brake pedal there was a grinding noise and the vehicle began shaking. The vehicle began pulling to the right and failed to slow down. The entire warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The driver applied continuous force to the brake pedal in order to decrease the speed of the vehicle. An authorized dealer stated that the failure was contributed to the anti-lock brake system. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction. The contact had concerns of the safety hazard. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 110,000. The current mileage was 116,000.

42 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

1. While driving along, there was suddenly a loud grinding noise and the vsc trac and the trac off lights came on and stayed on. 2. This incident was the second time it has happened in the last few weeks. As a consequence, I dare not drive my vehicle now. 3. I cannot afford an expensive repair right now, so I must now ride my bike or the bus anywhere I need to go.

43 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/30/2007

2003 Toyota Sequoia with 64000 miles. Vsc/abd lights came on and did come off. The brakes failed on one occasion and quickly came back, but made metal grinding noise. Car was brought to dealer, and was out of warranty. I wa s being told o replace the computer system. They said since there was a TSB, that they might be able to cover 1/2 the cost. There should be a recall on this problem.

44 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/25/2005

Vehicle makes a loud grinding noise from the front of the car when put in to gear. Vsc trac and vsc off lights light up and buzzer sounds. Once the lights and buzzer go off the grinding stops but the lights remain on. When driving the car feels very loose, like it is going to lose control. I brought the vehicle in to the dealership and they said that 2 computers , the vsc computer and the translator computer, failed. The dealership said that there have been many instances of this occurrence, and that the software used in the computers was bad. All of this happened at 39k miles and the warranty was up at 36k. Toyota has been negligent in the fact that this is a known manufacturers defect and there is no recall or warranty for these defects. I am not sure if this issue can cause injuries or death, or possibly re-occur.

45 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/04/2003

Toyota is advising brakes need to be replaced. Car has 260000 miles on it and is 1yr old. Have complained about brake issue to Toyota at 15000 miles. No solution Toyota did nothing. Brakes make grinding noise like gravel. Also the vsc system engages and does not take power from drive train, result in very loud metal shearing noises from undercarriage. Toyota is saying this is normal. Toyota is advising the avg life of brakes on this car is approx 20000 miles there is a major design error between the vcs and the abs brake system resulting poor brake life and this can not be a safe situation when vsc does not release power to brakes when it activates. Vcs also activates at drop of a hat. General brake design must have major design flaw if avg life is only 20000 miles.

46 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

Vehicle skid control light, abs, and vsc off lights come on. Get grinding noise from right front wheel as the abs applies the brake and steering wheel and vehicle pulls extremely to the right. Almost loose control of vehicle if your not expecting it. This happens on dry pavement.
