Toyota Sienna owners have reported 6 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Sienna based on all problems reported for the Sienna.
When traveling around 30 to 35 mph (well under speed limit) on dry clear roads, on left turns (often slightly downhill) suddenly the vsc and slip/trac lights up, the abs system is activated / brakes engage. Foot is not on the brake and speeds are not excessive. I am not using run-flat tires, but that doesn't seem to make a difference for others online. I see dozens of similar complaints online about this same thing from 2001 to 2015 Siennas. Two say that replacing rack & pinion fixed it; 1 says it does not. This started happening about 3 months ago, but is now happening more often. Approx 156k miles. Other fixes that have not worked: replace front speed sensors, changed all pads and rotors, and replacing the steering angle sensor. None of those worked. On person says, "most common prob seems to be the rack bushing where the rack is mounted. They wear out and cause the rack to move when turning. . . Bushings are hard to replace so just replace the rack and it will solve the problem if it is loose. ( although its a bit expensive) the yaw sensor or steering sensor has also been the culprit in some cases. " another says, "steering linkages could be another culprit - control arm bushings were severely worn and could potentially be another source. Alignment and zero-point calibration sometimes help, but not for long. " I don't feel safe driving myself or my children in this car, but can't afford another. And can't afford a $1k fix - especially if others have this issue. What can I do?.

Tl the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while going around a curve, the vehicle independently slowed abruptly without the brake pedal being depressed. The traction control warning light was illuminated. The dealer colonial Toyota (2600 w pike rd, indiana, PA 15701, (724) 471-4287) suggested that the issue may be due to a broken wire or a dirty sensor. It was suggested that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the front and rear wheel hubs needed to be replaced. The repairs were completed however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same independent mechanic replaced and the speed sensors were replaced however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty or recall. The failure mileage was unknown.

While driving at approximately 40 mph and entering a left turn curve, the abs and vsc lights activated and the vehcle lurched violently to the right then back to thge left. I was able to regain control after a few seconds, but during this time time I was not able to steer properly. The vehicle was taken to an independent service facility. The brakes and stability control were inspected. There were not any trouble codes stored. Examination of the wheel speed sensors revealed the right and left sensors were seized in their mounting brackets. We believe the sensors have rusted and have swollen. We had the abs and vsc systems disconnected. The problem has not occurred since this was done. We are planning on replacing these sensor in the near future. This is a very serious condition and needs to be investigated.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. While driving approximately 5 mph a slip control alarm began to sound and the rear brakes locked. During the failure a slip control light also began illuminating on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that there was rust developing on a spindle near the front driver's side speed sensor. The front driver's side speed sensor was replaced and the rust was cleaned from the spindle. The failure continued to occur. The failure and current mileages were 94,900. The VIN was unavailable.

Is Toyota 2002 Sienna safe to drive? as of februray 2010, we still observe slippage during stops at slow speeds. The brakes pulsate when applied slowly. This is a problem that comes and goes. In December 2007, we reported the following problems to the dealer 1) abs and low tire pressure warning lights turn on and off 2) crunching sound heard when braking with delayed braking action, particularly in cold, rainy weather. The dealer found no signal at right rear speed sensor, and recommended replacing abs actuator (which we did) -- total cost approx. $2,000. 00, but insisted that this was a "fluke. " van had 66,481 miles at the time. Problem with braking still occurs, though no warning lights appear. We are concerned that Toyota is selectively recalling newer models and ignoring the fact that there have been reported braking and acceleration problems with older vehicles as well.
