I was driving 35 mph on at least 4 seperate occassions when my I applied my brakes, they completely failed. I took it back to Toyota and they kept it for 10 days, flushed the brake lines 4 times, replaced the master cylinder, charged me $600 and made me sign a form saying the van was unsafe to drive because they have no idea what was wrong with it.
2005 Toyota Sienna. Consumer writes in regards to brake failure. The consumer stated several weeks ago, he was turning around in the driveway, and when he pressed down with his right foot, the engine roared and the vehicle jumped forward until he applied more pressure to the brake pedal, at which point the vehicle stopped. The consumer realized the brake pedal could be depressed easily below the level of the gas pedal, hence the roar and surge. The consumer was informed brake pedals were no longer adjustable and when the mechanic checked the vehicle, the brake master cylinder was failing and accounted for the brakes not functioning properly at times.

While driving at slow speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the deceleration is almost zero. Pressing harder on the pedal does nothing to increase the deceleration. This has happened numerous times. I have had the vehicle into the shop several times and nothing could be found. I have repalced the master cylinder with no change. Crashes were averted in some cases by inches.

I was driving approximate 25-30 mph on a dry, level street. A car stopped in front of me to make a left hand turn. I applied the brakes and nothing happened. I released and reapplied the brakes again and again no response. I was able to swerve to the right into an empty parking lot to avoid hitting the car or another collision. After swerving and reapplying the brakes a 3rd or 4th time I was able to come to a stop. My kids and I were severely shaken, but not injured. We decided this problem was due to the master cylinder. We replaced it and have had 3 more incidents since replacing the master cylinder. 1 was in reverse leaving my drive way. I wound up hitting and embankment across the street to stop me. This was a slight down hill roll in reverse. I went from parked to out of control. I never touched the accelerator and hit the brake multiple times and even tried shifting back into park (knowing that's bad for the transmission), nothing worked. After getting stopped and pulling forward everything seemed normal again. My husband was driving in traffic and we were approaching a turn and had to merge in to perpendicular traffic. Approx speed 25-35 mph. The brakes again completely failed and we had to swerve through a traffic light in to a free lane of traffic to avoid a rear end collision with the cars infront of us. We ordered another master cylinder and were preparing to install it. Today the brakes failed again at a stop sign (approx speed 5-10 mph) I had been stopped and started to ease in to the main road when I saw a car coming from the left.

My brake master cylinder has had to be replaced 4 times in the last 2. 5 years. I was terrified when my brakes would not my brake pedal went all the way down to the floor. Since I am a disabled driver who cannot transfer in and out of my wheelchair on my own made it extremely worse! the first time the van had 5000 mi on it. The second time with within 25 mi and a day after I picked it up from the dealership! the dealership cover it under my warranty for the first 2 times in may of '08. Now that it happened again. I was told that it was not covered under my warranty because my van was modified, but it ha 24,000 mi and 2. 5 year old. The brake master cylinder was not tampered with during the conversion process and is a Toyota part. There was an investigation done to find out who was at fault. It was determined that Toyota's part was defective but the dealership still refuse to warranty it! the dealerships are unwilling to even help us find a solution. Now I'm forced pay 1000. 00+ to fix it when it should be cover under warranty. I am forced to fix it because it's my only means of transportation! my family and I are extremely upset with the service and difficulties we are receiving. I would think that if the problem is not Toyota's fault, then should go the extra mile to help resolve it instead of leaving their customers out in the cold! terrible way to do business!.

Last year I was driving my 2005 Toyota Sienna, and a line of ducks walked out in front of my car. I slammed on the brakes but the car just kept going, running over a duck and stopping about 30 ft later. I thought maybe I was too slow to brake. Then a couple of weeks later a man walked out from behind a trailer and I tried to slam on the brakes (I was only going about 20 mph). The man saw me and had time to get out of the way thankfully since the car didn't stop until 10 ft afterwards. I brought the car to my dealer and they said 'the master cylinder is bypassing' and replaced it. I don't have the old part. However, I wanted to make sure you knew about it, because it was not obvious during normal driving, only when I had to stop quickly. And someone could easily have been killed.
