37 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

While loading my kids at a parking lot, we opened the rear hatch with the remote control, it opened completely and when one of the kids was putting his stuff in the back the hatch started to close to the point in which it wouldn't stop. My wife and I had to hold the hatch to not let it continue closing with my kid in the way. The hatch continued to push down and pressing my kid. After a few seconds of pulling the hatch up, finally it came back and opened again, just to then close again by itself with no apparent reason. There were no injuries, just a good amount of stress for the 10-15 seconds of the incident.

38 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

2010 Toyota Sienna rear liftgate automatically closes on occasion without pushing the key fob or the interior button. It has occurred 5 times in the last 2 weeks. No one has been hit by the door yet because we are aware of it happening. I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. No other action has been taken.

39 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/29/2010

I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna with power liftgate. On number of occasions, starting on the Jan 29,2010, the lift gate would go up and rather than staying up, it start closing. When this initially happened, I was getting under the liftgate as it opened to grab a bag and quickly moved out of the way when I realized that the liftgate was starting close. On number of times, I had to manually push the gate up as it was closing to getting it to stay open. Today on Feb 4th, I took the Sienna to the dealer at morristown, NJ and they told me that there was nothing wrong. When I relayed to him that there was a recall regarding this incident, they looked it up tin their system and told me that my car was not the right model. I subsequently, checked my service record and indeed the struts for the liftgate were recalled and replaced by the same dealer in Dec. ,2008. Now, a little over a year and 15,000 miles of driving, this problem is happening as described per recall message. I am worried that this issue has not been resolved or the struts that they replaced may be defective.

40 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

2005 Toyota Sienna: during cool/cold weather, the automatic lift gate closes immediately and without as soon as it fully opens - both when using the key fob and when opened manually. The problem began in 2009, abated during the summer of 2010 and has begun again in Nov. 2010 now that the cool weather is upon us.

41 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

My rear hatch on the 2005 Toyota Sienna minivan does not stay up when opened. The weight of the rear door (trunk) makes this very dangerous as I put things in and take them out because I have to hold it up with one hand. No accidents or anything else occurred, so I think it is just a wear issue. The dealership is charging an excessive amount to fix it. Also my sliding passenger side door will not work automatically when the button is pushed anymore. No accidents or other damage.

42 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. While attempting to place items in the trunk of the vehicle, the rear tailgate failed and struck the contact on her head. The failure caused a deep gash. There were no prior warnings. The contact then proceeded to go to the hospital and had her wounds cleaned. She is currently on medication for the severe headaches caused by the liftgate failure. The contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection. She will also notify the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 65,000.

43 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/27/2009

My 2005 Toyota Sienna liftgate struts failed on 2-27-2009 when the open door collapsed without being supported as it normally would by the struts. My wife still had her hands under the door and was able to catch it to prevent it from falling onto my son who was under the door. This is a manually operated door, not a power operated door, and the local Toyota dealer service department says it is not covered by the previous recall for this problem. This should not happen on a four year old car, and is still a safety issue that Toyota should repair. Why is this failure covered under a recall for a powered door but not for a manually operated one? this door can freefall all the way down, so is potentially more dangerous than the powered one due to the speed with which it can fall, in my opinion. As a result of the failure to include all struts in ths recall, I will now be forced to carry a 2x4 to prop open the liftgate while waiting for a new recall to be issued before I can get it fixed. This is a dangerous situation that should have been recalled along with the other faulty doors, and it appears that someone or some organization(s) decided that economics was more important that consumer safety. You need to correct this mistake.

44 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2009 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

Usually in cold temperatures, whenever the rear automatic hatch is opened from the either the fob or the van's control panel, the rear hatch door begins to close back without warning/notice. This has happened at least 20 times since we purchased our 2009 Toyota Sienna in December of 2008 and is increasing in frequency. The approximate onset date is recorded below on this form. When it begins to close, adults and children have been trapped between the hatch and the vehicle, resulting in pinning and cuts to the head. Only with strong manual force does the hatch stop closing. As of today, 2/9/10, there have been no notifications of a recall or effort to correct or repair the problem. Because the problem was infrequent at first and corrected itself when the temperatures got warmer, we thought it was just a temporary glitch, but then the problem reappeared once temperatures began to get cold again in the fall of 2009.

45 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/14/2008

Rear lift gate failure on 2005 Toyota Sienna xle. Hatch began closing immediately as it reached the full open position September 14th, 2008. Currently investigating recall postings, dealer and manufacturer remedies.

46 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/09/2008

I received a recall notice regarding my 2004 Toyota Sienna van to have the rear liftgate support struts replaced. I was advised that there had been reports of failure resulting in potential injuries. I visited the dealer 9/08 and had the struts replaced. Following the replacement a problem developed. My liftgate is power operated and when I opened the liftgate it immediately reversed and closed repeatedly. I returned to the dealer on 10/20/08 and they replaced the struts again. The problem remained and on 11/3/08 the dealer insisted the motor had probably worn out and I had it replaced. The solution seemed to work until 1/09 when again the liftgate would go up and immediately back down. Worse yet, the safety feature would not work (if the liftgate meets resistance; like someone in the way). If the liftgate meets resistance it is supposed to reverse. On 1/13/09 an employee of a retailer was almost injured while loading merchandise into the vehicle. The liftgate would not reverse and I had to pull him away. I went back to the dealer and they explained they have had many complaints. They went on to explain that apparently cold weather is to blame resulting in the struts not functioning properly. The dealer went on to explain that Toyota to date does not have a solution. I'm amazed, this is a potential hazard.

47 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/26/2008

2004 Toyota Sienna. Approx. 60,000. Per recall, both rear gate struts were replaced on 8/26/08. Since then, rear gate automatically closes when it's remotely opened (I. E. , opened with the key fob or console button) and it reaches its point of highest travel, thereby presenting a danger to persons standing under the gate. I returned the vehicle once to the dealer which said a technician would replace the "bumpers" or "stops," but the problem continues.

48 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/02/2008

The hatch strut on my 2005 Toyota Sienna failed and the hatch will no longer stay open. This could have caused serious injury to myself or any of my family should it have just dropped on us. No one was injured, but in researching this its seems it is very common and should therefore be a recall. My car is 3years 4 months old and this failure should not have occurred this early.

49 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the passenger side sliding door sticks and is extremely difficult to open. She has to use excessive force to open the door. The door also freezes in the winter. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer three or four times, but they could not duplicate the failure. The dealer stated that once the 36 month warranty expired, the repair would cost $1,800. In addition, the rear automatic hatchback closes prematurely and too quickly, which could injure the contact's children. The failure mileage was 20,000 and current mileage was 32,000.

50 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

2005 Toyota Sienna, manual rear lift gate struts have failed, will no longer hold the lift gate open. Toyota sent out a notice for power lift gates with the same problem. I took this complaint to two local dealerships and they stated that my VIN number was not included in the notice. We are fortunate that this did not result in any injuries.

51 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/12/2008

I recently purchased a 2005 Toyota Sienna (used) and after a few days of owning the Mini van the manual rear hatch door did not remain elevated as it had previously done and was designed to do. The door, which is heavy, simply fell down and bumped me. I determined that the failure was the struts (rear liftgate struts) and I proceeded to get part quotes from various local Toyota parts departments ranging from $200-$700 (seemed a high range. . . And I was never informed of a service bulletin that was issued). I next did some searches on the internet and found that this defect was a recurring issue with the Toyota Sienna and that Toyota had issued a bulletin and extended the warranty to cover this item. Upon receiving resistance from local Toyota dealerships to cover this work under warranty, I called Toyota headquarters to make a complaint. I then made an appointment at kings Toyota in cincinnati, OH and made them aware of the specific issue, warranty, etc and brought the car in about 4 days later for my scheduled appointment. After dropping off the vehicle, I received a call back that they did not have the parts in-stock (even though I had made the appointment specifically for this warranty item, and also informed them when I dropped off the car of exactly what parts and work was needed). I wanted to make NHTSA aware of the seeming resistance / delays of Toyota to fix this issue with my vehicle. Fortunately, I caught the rear door before it hit me very hard, but if a child or smaller person would have been underneath, it could cause serious injury due to the large weight of the door. Thanks very much for your time.

52 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/03/2008

The rear liftgate on my van will open then close suddenly. If a person were to get in the way they could be crushed and seriously injured.

53 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/16/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. Whenever the contact opens the rear liftgate, it will automatically close back. The liftgate will also close regardless if an object or the contact is attempting to keep it open. There have been no injuries due to the failure. Also, whenever snow falls from the roof rack onto the windshield, the windshield wipers were not strong enough to remove the snow from the windshield. The contact's vision is hindered. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 42,000 and failure mileage was 41,000.

54 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/13/2008

55 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Rear hatch struts on 2004 Toyota Sienna failed on approximately 01may08. Liftgate closed on my wife and six year old nephew. Had to use considerable force to reverse the action of door. Took the car with rear liftgate strut warranty enhancement to the dealer on 21may08 and the repair was made, but the liftgate still fails to stay up.

56 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/06/2008

My 2005 Sienna minivan has a rear door that keeps falling down on its own. What's worse, because the Sienna is equipped with a motor to pull the door back, the door keeps pulling back no matter what the resistance is. It hurt my 2 year old son so bad we had to take him to emergency room for the bruises.

57 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/23/2008

The rear automatic lift-gate of my 2004 Toyota Sienna is defective. Approximately 50% of the time the lift-gate opens and immediately starts to close on top of your head. It's gotten so bad that my family now pushes the button to open the rear lift-gate while we stand clear and then when it reverses, we keep pushing the button on the remote over and over until finally the rear lift-gate will stop reversing and stay up. Only then can we duck under the door to get what we need out of the back. In the early stages of the problem, family members were whacked over the head at least a dozen times. It didn't take long to learn that the rear lift-gate cannot be trusted. It began as an intermittent problem, but it happens every day now. The dealership said this morning that the problem is not under warranty.

59 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/27/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. While attempting to open the rear door with lift gage button the door opens a few inches and will not stay open, it closed with force and without warning. The struts have failed when attempting to manually hold the door in the upright position. The power cycles automatically engaged while attempting to manually lift the door. The dealer advised the contact to disconnect the battery then reconnect it to reset the computer; however, that did not correct the failure. The current and failure mileages were 29,000. Updated 01/17/08 the consumer stated the defect is still affecting the vehicle to date. Updated 01/17/08.

60 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

63 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/31/2007

Power lift gate on 2004 Toyota Sienna dropped down and struck driver on back of neck causing injury. As in past, there was no warning prior to liftgate coming down approx 1-2 feet. Vehicle was repaired two week prior by dealer, with new liftgate struts and brackets for same reported problem. Vehicle only had 31,000 miles and was 3 months past 36 month warranty period. Had to repair under extended warranty.

64 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

Lift gate failed to open all the way quite often and then began to fail in October of 2007. I was loading and the gate fell unexpectedly and I could not get out from under it. Though I was not injured, it happened several times. I have replaced the whole door since then and the struts. The door and struts are not even two months old and I have the same problem. The door is unsafe and unreliable. How many people are putting up with this and getting lucky? those gates are very heavy. It fell on my husband who is 215 pounds and he almost could not get out, either.

67 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/23/2007

The power liftgate started to randomly close. It closed on myself and my child while we were unloading the trunk area of the minivan. It caused some discomfort as it was quite heavy. One time it automatically reopened when it hit my body but 3 other times it did not and I had to jump out of the way. I have had to take the power control off and open it manually - even now it will shut on me but with the power disengaged I can hold it open. It is a heavy door and could easily cause some injury. I have tested it using the remote and it is still malfunctioning. I indicated injury below as I was hit with it and my son banged his head though it was all minor.

68 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

69 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/03/2007

Rear hatch on my 2005 Toyota Sienna is not staying open. When I open the rear door, it automatically closes on me without notice. This could be dangerous seeing as the rear door is very heavy. Door has not been repair as the dealership wants us to pay 583 dollars for the repair. I think this is something the manufacturer should address and have a recall. It seems to be a common issue and NHTSA has a case currently open(ea06020).
