On June 17, 2016, I got into my 2004 Toyota Sienna xle-ims rampvan (joint Toyota-ims, floor-lowered wheelchair van conversion with ramp). There was debris on the back seat (what in a non-ims Sienna be the third-row seat). I saw tire belts sticking up from the tread of the spare tire. The tire had exploded and deflated, strewing debris from the ruptured tire belts and tread on the back seat. Note that in the ims version of the Sienna, the spare tire is mounted on a bracket behind the back seat. Thankfully, no one had been in the van at time of explosion. The rupture of the tire could have been behind the head or neck of a passenger sitting in the left-rear position. The exploded spare tire is a firestone radial tempa spare, t155/80r17 101m. It is the original spare tire and was inflated to the specified 60 psi. I still have the exploded tire, which I had dismounted and replaced. I also have photos of the ruptured tired while it was still mounted to its bracket behind the back seat.

2004 Toyota Sienna. Consumer writes in regards to replacement parts not available to complete spare tire cable recall notice.
Received letter advising that under recall 14v27300 my 2008 Toyota Sienna had a potential problem with the cable, holding the spare tire underneath the vehicle which needed to be replaced. In the fall of 2014 my spare tire was relocated to the luggage compartment of my van which rendered the area unusable for folding the rear seats down to use that area for transporting larger items. I checked with my local dealer regarding a permanent solution/repair and was told they had not yet received notice of and/or repair parts for the identified problem. This has been an unreasonable amount of time to wait to regain full use of my minivan.
Campaign 14v273000 (spare tire cable corrosion) was initiated in may 2014. It's now a year later and there is no permanent fix, nor has Toyota even provided a date when there will be a permanent fix. The interim fix I have been living with for the past year was to remove the spare tire from under my minivan and put it in the passenger compartment. Toyota has gone way too long without providing a fix. But what troubles me today is that when I look up my VIN ([xxx]) in Toyota's database and in yours (safercar. Gov), the response is no open recalls. How can this be? "no open recalls," yet the problem still exists. I wonder if anyone is working on it. Btw, I'd be happy to have a new cable same as the original installed, but apparently the dealer isn't allowed to use the same part as original because it could corrode again, which in my opinion is unlikely because at this point in my minivan's life, any cable will outlast the rest of the vehicle. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Spare tire failure.
The contact owns 2010 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the vehicle did not have a spare tire, even though the owner's manual stated that the vehicle did have a spare. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the vehicle did not come with a spare tire despite what was stated in the manual. The contact beleived it to be a safety issue because the vehicle was sold under the impression that a spare tire was available and could become stranded because of a tire failure. Toyota dealer failed to remedy the defect within reasonable time . Recall type-safety recall, severe corrosion of spare tire carrier cable. Model-sienna-model year-2006,mfg-Toyota.
Toyota Sienna had a recall of spare tire and placed the spare tire in the back of the van without securing it. The tire has not been secured and is a security risk in hard braking for the passengers in the backseat with one seat folded down. Toyota refused to address the issue. They asked me to file arbitration and also told me that they do not have a plan to harness the tire.
Loose spare tire in cargo seating area of Toyota Sienna 1999 van. Due to a recall on the corrosion of the spare tire cable, the spare tire was removed and placed in the cargo area of the van. The tire is not secured down and moves around during driving. If there was any type of accident, especially a roll over, the tire with the rim would be able to move around the seating area and could cause severe injuries. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. I did call Toyota with my concern with the tire not being secured, they gave me a case number and told me that there was nothing they could do at this time.

While having service performed on my 2007 Sienna this past summer, I was told by the service representative that the spare tire on my van needed to be removed because of a defective cable that would allow it to drop to the roadway from the underside of the vans frame. At that time I was told that a recall would soon be announced so that I would receive a replacement cable and could once again drive with a spare tire. It has been several months now since my spare tire was removed, and I have received no information whatsoever from Toyota regarding this issue. I am frankly uncomfortable driving without a spare tire and consider this a personal safety issue.
While driving my 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, the cable which held the spare tire under the car snapped and the spare tire fell off the vehicle.
The spare tire in our 2003 Sienna fell off the bottom of the van. Luckily we were only going 25 mph and no one was behind us. It appears the wire holding the tire rusted and broke, causing the tire to fall.

I have a 2008 Toyota Sienna van. I had once gotten a flat tire about three months ago. I tried to unwind my spare tire from the undercarriage unscrewing the bolt to lower the spare tire using the winch mechanism. Once the spare was lowered I could not pull the wire back up again. Once the flat was repaired I could not use the winch again to pull back my spare tire to the original position. I went ahead and replaced the winch mechanism on my own cost after not getting any support from the dealership to help fix it or repeated calls to Toyota that refused to acknowledge the defect. They citied that I was out of warranty and now could do nothing. Now I am hearing there is indeed a problem with the mechanism and there is a recall on the van. I placed a call to the dealership in town there is no response. While there may have been dangerous situation this was avoided I think by putting in a third party winch mechanism on my own cost. I like Toyota to either 1) fix my problem 2) pay for the cost of fixing the problem which I took care to fix it on my own cost.
On November 30, 2009, I got a flat tire, and called aaa to put on the spare. When they arrived and looked under my car, they discovered that I no longer had a spare tire! it had apparently fallen off at some point previously. I think it may have fallen off in late September of 2009, as I did notice something bumping around under the car on a trip on the highway.
Corrosion on the spare tire carrier and cable. Causes: 1) binding of cable preventing lowering of spare tire 2) slipping of carrier and cable; possibly causing sudden drop; 3) weakening of carrier and cable, and 4) sticking of carrier and cable causing jamming preventing spare tire from being lowered or lowered in a jerking and unsafe manner. 2002 Toyota Sienna fwd, with spare tire carrier.

Run flat tire commercial. It is true that you can travel on a run flat tire for over 100 miles with a nail punctured tire. This commercial does not tell you the prones of it and I experienced this problem. I have a 2008 Toyota Sienna all-wheel drive and it has the electronic indicator of low air pressure. It came on once in a while and just added some air. But lately it came on more frequently and I took the van to the Toyota dealer in la crescenta CA. , where I bought the van, for inspection. They told me there is a nail in the left front tire and this type of the ran flat tire can not be repaired. So I had to buy a new tire. Lucky enough they could order it right away and got the tire mounted the next day. The dealer could not mount the tire on the rim and had to send it to a special tire place, because this are special rims, I have been told. The price for this one tire was $ 269. 56 including mounting, balancing and sales tax. Since this type of a van with this run flat tires, does not come with a spare tire. They told me, it is not necessary to have one. What will happened, when you are in the middle of the wilderness in the country. Yes you can drive over 100 miles on the flat tire, but when you get to the next town and they have to order this tire and it can take days before they get one. There you will be stuck for a while. This does not sound like a good way to have this tires. It sure is a miss leading advertising and a bad experience. On tap of it the tires have no warranty. Unhappy experienced owner, karl.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the spare tire unexpectedly fell off of the vehicle while driving 10 mph. The tire had never been used. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, but they did not explain the reason behind the failure. The failure mileage was 94,000.
After getting a flat tire, I bought two tires at ntb, waltham, MA to replace the flat and the old spare tire. The new tires (uni tiger paw) were put on the front of the car. The other 3 tires were rotated to the back and to the spare. I was also charged for a wheel alignment. Within 100 miles, as I was driving on the highway at 65 mph, the front right wheel began making a loud thumping noise so I pulled off the highway and called aaa. The tire was fine, but it was on the verge of falling off. Aaa tightened it and checked all the other tires, which were fine, and I was on my way again. Apparently the lug nuts on the front right tire had not been tightened. This was a dangerous event due to human error. I am concerned about how frequently such mishaps occur and wanted to report it. I will also contact ntb to let them know of this serious and dangerous event.

Safety issue - vehicle was not equipped with a spare tire, jack and tire wrench. Run-flat tires were prematurely worn prior to 30k. Toyota dealers refuse to resolve tire issues and will not add spare tire and jack to vehicle. This is major highway safety issue!.
