1 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

At first, I have the tire pressure indicator light continuing to lit up. Then one morning, the van was slow to response to shifting gear and acceleration. After stopping, it won't start and move into gear at all. There was no engine light being lit or warning sign. Towed to shore Toyota at mays landing, NJ. They told me that the transmission oil had all leaked out due to the burst of abrupt failure on the inlet to the radiator. They asked me to replace the radiator at a cost of $1,150. 26! after repaired, they then told me that the transmission is bad and difficult to move into gear. They quoted another $3,780 to replace the transmission. I was furious. Since that the dealer told me that the van can be driven. I was prepared to trade it in and weighing my options. The van has 133,279 miles. I drove it ok initially, however, I experienced that it was difficult to accelerate twice. After 15 miles when I stopped at a traffic light, the van just stuck- it cannot move in any of the gears at all. I towed back home. After cooling down, it was able to drive again. The new transmission fluid smelled burnt. I am wondering why: ?why the engine light was not lit up at all when the coolant temperature was so high before spoiling the whole transmission? ?why was that not even any dtc codes stored on the obdii systems at all after all these defects? ?this seemed the same problem as the sticky transmission that other customers have been complaining about, yet Toyota has not informing the customer of any actions need to be take. I have been receiving notices about the various recalls and the potential of monetary compensation, however, nothing has been realized yet. ?this seemed to be a very dangerous situations, if the van can be slowed down or stopped so drastically, the people in the vehicle could be bumped over.

6 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/29/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate uncontrollably. The contact was able to stop and exit the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the front driver side tire was shredded and detached from the rim. The contact stated that the tire warning light did not illuminate indicating there was a failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the tire was replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technicians advised that they were unable to diagnose the failure of the system. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

7 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/04/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, he noticed that the vehicle would pull to the left and that there was a vibration. He then drove 3 miles to a service station and that the front passenger tire had a split. The tire pressure monitor system had not illuminated on the instrumental panel. There was no spare tire available due to it being all-wheel drive. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer and advised him that there were unable to diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.

8 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

9 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/11/2009

We have a 2005 Toyota Sienna with all wheel drive (awd) and run-flat tires. The right rear tire disintegrated while on i80 at freeway speed. There was no warning by the tire pressure monitoring system, before or after the tire failure. I noticed a vibration earlier in the day and now suspect the tire had been flat for some miles. This was our second instance of a failure of a run-flat tire, but in the case of the left front tire, the warning light did come on. In both cases, it was necessary to replace all 4 tires due to the awd. In both cases an alignment has also been done, which includes resetting the speed sensors (TSB pg005-04), and no problems were detected. This indicates the system is inadequate to reliably detect a flat tire and a crash could have easily resulted.

10 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Regarding 2005 Toyota Sienna investigation pe06010 tires: pressure monitoring and regulating systems which is "closed", I have experienced this twice. Two flat tires, with dunlap run flats, both tires severely damaged by running without enough pressure, no warning lite came on. Scary to think you can drive at freeway speeds and not know you have a flat, but when you exit the car and happen to notice the flat you feel lucky not to have crashed. Toyota dealer says this is just the run flats doing their job. I had two sets of these run flats and have switched to standard radials and feel safer, at least I will know when I have a flat tire while driving! sorry I don't have the tire/model size info in front of me now but I can look at receipts for further details. I know it was sport something, and 17". The dunlaps went to recycling so I don't have their serial numbers.

11 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

2006 Toyota Sienna awd. Purchased 12/06. Had to replace all 4 run flat tires 3/08. On 8/13/09 tire pressure monitoring system light came on. On 8/14/09 took vehicle to dealership which confirmed tire pressure was okay on all 4 tires and light was turned off. On 8/15/09 driver side front tire went flat while driving; hot to touch, smelled like was burning, but no fire. Light never went on. Vehicle was immediately towed to dealership. On 8/17/09 tire was replaced and picked up vehicle on 8/18/09 and light was off. By end of day on 8/18/09 light was back on.

12 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/16/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The tpms does not alert him when the tires have low pressure or if they are about to fail. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The technician could not duplicate the failure, therefore they could not provide a remedy. The manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 60,000. The current mileage was 69,000. Updated 10/23/09 the consumer stated the tire pressure warning system did not alert them that there was a tire failure. The tire shredded while driving 65 mph. The second occurrence, the consumer ran over an object in the road, and once again the tire pressure system didn't detect a failure. Updated 10/27/09.

13 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/28/2009

When driving 2007 Sienna van tire went flat and tire pressure sensor (plastic)broke off rim, dealership would not warranty the sensor, even though the vehicle is only 1 1/2years old, also dunlop tire are garbage always loosing tire pressure since we own vehicle.

14 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/26/2008

Our 2006 Toyota Mini-van low tire pressure light keeps coming on, even though we have just had new tires put on, reset it several times and verified that the tire pressure is good in all 5 tires. We are not sure if we should trust it or not and feel this is a potential safety issue. It has 41k mi and the Toyota dealer was rude and said would only say bring it in for a $95 diagnostic. Checking the web there are a lot of folks with the same problem. . . . Lots of forums.

15 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/26/2008

This report is for my mother in law's 2006 Toyota Sienna xe awd minivan with the dunlop runflat tires. This minivan has had 2 "defective" tires on it since it's purchase and with less than 8000 miles on the tires. Both tires were replaced by the dealer, but we continue to have tire/pressure problems. I believe both tires were ruined due to the pressure sensing system not detecting low pressure in the tires and causing the side walls to collapse after continued driving. Luckily, nobody has been injured, however if driving at high speeds with this system a potential exists for a severe accident. I have spoken with the national Toyota and local dealer, and they continue to not address the problem. The dealer has stated in writing that the pressure system is functioning properly, however runflat tires on this system do not register low pressure until multiple tires or a single tire has hardly any pressure in it. The local dealer manager agrees with me that the runflat tires with the abs type pressure sensing system is not a safe system. I have requested to have regular tires installed on this van so the pressure system can detect low pressure, however Toyota will not change them for me. I feel that having runflats as installed by the manufacturer on this type of pressure system can eventually lead to an accident when a low tire blows off the rim at a high speed, causing the driver to lose control. With the runflat tires, a driver cannot visually look at the tire and detect that it is low, due to the thick sidewalls that allow them to "run flat". This is a safety issue that I believe Toyota should address and correct before somebody is killed. I live in alaska and my mother in law frequently makes trips to anchorage, where fuel/service stations are hundreds of miles apart and -50âºf weather is common. Please feel free to call me to discuss further as the local dealer and national Toyota seem to be passing this off. Thank you. Regards, peter marvin.

16 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

Tpms on 2004-2006 Toyota Sienna awd models does not monitor low tire pressure properly. It only works when the tire goes to zero psi.

17 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna with all wheel drive and run-flat tires. I was told that the car has a tire pressure monitoring system (tpms). I had two events of low tire pressure that went undetected by me. Both times I took the car to the dealer who told me the noise and vibration was due to low tire pressure. I told them that I never saw the low tire pressure light on the dashboard. The latest event was a blow-out of the left front run-flat tire on hwy 85 in CA. The car was difficult to handle and I slowed and exited the freeway and there was never a tpms warning light on the dashboard to indicate loss of tire pressure. The tire was totally gone. Had to cover the cost of that repair. I recently took the car back to the dealer to find out why the tpms was not working. The dealer then told me that the tpms system on the 2005 Toyota is based on the anti-lock braking system and uses the speed of tire rotation and not direct tire pressure measurements. Furthermore, they told me that the tmps was working perfectly. I find application of a tmps based on tire circumference with run-flat tires is completely useless. There is no way the 2005 Toyota Sienna tmps will ever work with run-flat tires. The run-flat tires have extremely strong side-walls to allow the car to continue with little air pressure but, that means the tire does not deform with low tire pressure. The fact that I had a total tire blowout without a tmps warning light showing means the tmps system does not work. I find this system to be unsafe and I want to know what is being done and how could this tmps system comply with department of transportation rule cfr citation: 49 cfr parts 571 and 590; docket NHTSA 2000-8572, rin id 2127-a133?.

18 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/28/2008

2005 Toyota Sienna xle limited, awd, VIN [xxx], tire pressure warning system does not work, and never has worked properly. It most recently failed on March 28, 2008, where the right rear tire had zero air pressure. This was a brand new run flat tire which went flat immediately after installation. The vehicle was driven 31miles and the tire pressure warning light never came on. Due to this faulty warning system, a brand new $250. 00+ tire was destroyed, requiring replacement. This system has failed numerous times prior to the above-mentioned incident. Since purchasing this vehicle, I have learned that this tire pressure warning system does not monitor the tire pressure at all; that it only monitors the wheel speed, and it is extremely inaccurate at that. I have discovered that Toyota had been aware of this problem for years and yet still fraudulently marketed this system as viable tire pressure warning system on the 2005 Toyota Sienna. As a disabled person, this tire pressure warning system was the deciding factor in my buying the 2005 Toyota Sienna. I have difficulty bending down to take the tire pressures and I expected and rely on this tire pressure warning system to warn me of low tire pressure; it is a total and complete failure in that regard. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

From the time we purchased the car we have had many problems with our bridgestone run flat tires. The sensor on the dashboard was constantly on, so we had to check the tire pressure every week- what a pain! the dealer was no help, they agreed that they have had many problems with the tires. We finally decided to replace them with standard tires and I drive without a spare. I figure I'll call aaa if I have a problem.

20 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/21/2007

Toyota Sienna and supposedly other models of Toyotas have a tire pressure warning system that does not warn mechanics of damage that will occur to sensors when tire is changed. Once damaged warning system will not function properly. Toyota charges $134. 00 per sensor plus labor. Without proper warning labels it must be assumed that a large amount of people are driving around with non functioning warning systems and/or numerous individuals are being unnecessarily charged for repairing items damaged due to Toyotas failure to warn. I suggest warning stickers on wheels and door by existing tire pressure sticker. Reality is no one should pay over $500 per change of set of tires for broken sensors when a $. 05 sticker could have avoided it.

21 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/14/2007

Tire went completely flat on my 2005 sienne xle limited before the tire pressure warning light went on. The low tire pressure warning system failed and despite the fact that it had "run flat" tires, I did not get the expect 50 miles of driving to get to a service station and needed to be towed.

22 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/12/2007

We purchased a 2007 Toyota Sienna xle awd in may of 2007. In Nov 2007, the low tire pressure warning light came on. I checked the tires and they were in fact low. We filled the tires with air. A couple of weeks later, the same thing happened. We put air in the tires and made an appointment to bring the car into the Toyota dealership. Toyota of bellevue checked the tires wed Dec 5, 2007. They checked all four tires and found nothing wrong. On wed night may 28, 2008, the same thing happened. The right front tire was at or below 15 psi, the other three tires were at or just under 20 psi. I filled all four tires and the light went out (when I filled the right front tire, I started the car to see if the warning indicator would go out; it did not go out, until I filled all four tires back up to normal pressure. On may 31, 2008 we brought the car into Toyota of bellevue and they took all four tires off and inspected, but found no problems. They did not remove the tires from the rims, nor did they submerge the tires in water, nor did they replace the valve stems. They did not find any foreign objects that may have pierced the tires. Called dunlop tires on 6/3/08 case#976284. On 6/4/08 we brought the car into elliott tire & service. They removed all of the tires and checked them. Stated it could be a faulty pressure sensor. On 8/31/08 on way to everett, the tire light came on again. Car sat outside at night and light is still on 9/1/08. Again the same thing happened in Jan 2009. We requested the dealer to replace the whole tire sensor system repeatedly. They refused every time. This car is not safe. The tire sensors allow air to leak and the tires become low despite the fact that we fill them every week.

23 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/24/2007

Toyota pre-2007 tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) design flaw. It only works when you "suddenly lose pressure" while vehicle is moving above 20 mph. It does not detect tire pressure loss any other time, even if one tire is at zero psi and you start driving, or if you hit a nail at a red light and tire pressure went to zero before the light turned green when you start moving again. Compounded with run-flat tires, the driver may never know they have a flat until the tire explodes.

24 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/18/2007

Tire pressure monitoring system does not work. Three times in the last 2 years I found zero tire pressure in one of the tires on our 2004 Toyota Sienna xle awd and the tire pressure monitoring system gave absolutely no warning. Reporting it to 2 different Toyota dealers, they said nothing is wrong.

25 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/15/2007

I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna limited for about 5 months. About 2 months ago the tire pressure light started to come on when all tire pressures actually are normal. So far I had visited my local dealership 3 times in the last few weeks. But the problem still was not solved because they seem don't know how to fix it. Then I went to the website and found out NHTSA has opened a preliminary evaluation regarding 2004 and 2005 seienna tire pressure and reglulating system. That's why I come here to complaint. My situation is when driving on the highway the tire pressure light will come on/off every 20-30 minutes. Although it didn't cause any incident yet. But after awhile, I guess most people might intend to neglect this false alarm. But it is very important to have it function correctly for a vehicle with a rft tire. Therefore I think this defect need to be recalled with a better design. I am going to keep my vehicle the way it is as a live example and welcome anyone from NHTSA come to check on it.

26 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

Replace all 4 tires @ 9000 mile due to pressure monitor fail to report, an alignment has was done at around 5000 mile because showing tire wear. Toyota states it's tire not the monitor system. I have the receipts to prove it. If it's the tires, why don't they replace them. Tires came with the car when I did purchased.

27 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/23/2007

The tire pressure warning system doesn't work.

28 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/16/2007

The tires on our 2005 Toyota Sienna minivan have failed twice: once in April 2006 and again in January 2007. Both times the low tire pressure indicator did not work . We warned Toyota the first time the sensor didn't work and they checked it and said it was working fine. Our tires failed again, and the indicator did not light this past time as well. Toyota has said we may have to pay for this latest set of tires.

29 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/17/2006

Major safety problem with tire air pressure system. Normal tire pressure is 35 psi. Because of the tire design, you can run with very low air pressure and not feel it (on a normal car, it is very obvious). That is why Toyota had to put in the tire pressure warning system/light. Twice the tire pressure warning system did not come on until a tire had ~10 psi. That is a dangerous level. The first time I did nothing and the tire was replaced by the tire manufacturer (nail issue) and the tire was less then 7 months old. The second time, I brought it to the dealer. They tested two ways: 1) on the computer and it passed; 2) test drive where alert light came on below 18 psi. In my testing it came on between 10-15 psi and in real life closer to 10-11 psi (based on my 2 problems). Checking tire pressure daily does not help because in real life, if you take a trip you can drive for 3-6 hours which if something happens to the tire during the trip, you will not know until it fails (again this is because unlike normal tires, you can not tell the tire has lost significant air pressure. You can read here and other places about the catastrophic failures others have had in just this situation. I spent many many hours on the phone with Toyota to get the specification on when the system should alert you. I was once told it is a difference of more then 5 psi. However, it seems that Toyota has no published spec for how the system should work in real life. This is defective and Toyota is not telling us the truth. All systems have to be designed to a spec. This system was and there is somewhere at Toyota a spec. They are not sharing with consumers because of the implication it would have (they will have to recall/fix them). I do hope someone at the NHTSA will pursue this since it is a safety issue for families.

30 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

Tire pressure warning system on my 2005 Sienna awd (13,000 miles) turned on. Checked pressure in all tires, left rear was below 15 psi, all others were 25 psi (recommended pressure is nte 51 psi). Filled tire to specification tire pressure and light rescinded. Within 5 days, light reappeared with same procedures and results. Took to the dealer. Dealer replaced single tire indicating a nail was found. Within 30 miles, the replacement tire deflated (dunlop, oem run flat tires) on freeway. No tire pressure warning system light illuminated. Air pressure was checked and did not register any pressure, assume 0 psi. Triggered to check tire pressure after hearing a loud popping sound. Tire pressure warning system is not operating as expected and dealer indicates there is nothing wrong and "that's just how the system works". Remaining dunlop oem run flat tires do not retain pressure greater than 25 psi. Dealer says they retain pressure when monitored there. But within 5 days, pressure returns to 25 psi.

31 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/16/2006

Catastrophic tire failure on a Toyota Sienna awd van with run flat tires. Fortunately, no major injuries or damage this time. The tire pressure monitoring system failed to sense the lack of pressure in one of the tires. Driving on the tire with no air pressure caused catastrophic tire failure. I was told by the Toyota dealer the tire pressure monitoring did not malfunction, it simply does not work. It cannot be fixed since Toyota says there is nothing wrong.

32 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/10/2006

2005 Sienna awd. Had a flat tire for a couple of days but did not notice it (only drove in town, not interstate speeds). The warning light appeared but disappeared, and then it was intermittent (it looked like it would turn on only after some driving. ) luckily this did not damage the tires, but I wonder what would have happen if I were on the interstate in the middle of nowhere and experienced the same problem (no warning light). I see that a recall may be in progress.

33 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/08/2006

Regarding NHTSA action no. Pe06010, I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna xle limited with awd with the tire pressure warning system (tpws) for my dunlop run flat tires (sp 4000). I have experienced punctures in two of my tires on separate occasions. Both times the tpws only activated when the psi was about 5- to 15. The dealer indicated to me that the magnetic system will only activate once a tire's height becomes lower due to air loss, and the magnetic field is "tripped". The problem is that the run flat tires do not lose their height due to air loss until the tire is nearly depleted. So, the tpws essentially cannot properly function as intended, at least when run flat tires are installed. As to the dunlop run flats, they had to be replaced after only 19,700 miles. I know numerous other consumers have had similar experiences. Toyota acknowledged the problem and relpaced my tires with a new set of 4 run flats at no charge (other than installation). Typical price is $250 per tire. Credit to toyata, but not sure what will happen when the new set fails.

34 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

Consumer passenger side rear tire deflated while driving. There were no warning lights, dealer informed consumer that there would be a warning light shown if pressure dropped to 5%. The warning light didn't illuminate to let the consumer know the tire had went flat. The consumer was informed the sensor was tied into the abs.

35 Tire Pressure Monitoring System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/15/2006

After only 19,000 miles of use, the run-flat tires on my Toyota Sienna have been worn away significantly to a dangerous level. The dealer has recommended only replacement with the same exact tire model, as no other tire brand or model may be used with this vehicle. At only 6,000 miles one tire had failed spontaneously without triggering the low-pressure warning system. I had been told by dealer the non-visible edge of tire (side facing toward the vehicle) had worn through the tread completely. That tire was replaced at my cost, assuming it was a unique and isolated incident. I see now that these tires are inadequate.
