36 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna xle awd which is equipped with dunlop run-flat tires. This car was used for one year and had mileage of 17,800 when we noticed that all four tires had the tread barrier exposed. It was exposed only on the outside and inside edges of the tires. The car was handling extremely strangely and was starting to wander on turns. This weekend changing lanes the car started to wander into an on-coming traffic lane when changing to the left lane of a four lane road. I contacted Toyota only to be told that there was no mileage guarantee on the tires and they were $250/piece to replace. When told that they nearly caused head on accident they quickly offered to replace two of them free and then I could repair the others. They still would not guarantee the tires for any future mileage. I have since gone on the web to find that these tires have been reported by a huge number of the owners to have a similar problem. I do not think we should have an accident to find out that a tire has an identified safety problem. These tires do not wear correctly, they wear much too fast, and the Toyota service rep at my dealership told me that we should run the tires at a higher than recommended tire pressure to help. The NHTSA should get involved in this matter before others are harmed or killed.

38 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/22/2005

Toyota Sienna (2004+) awd models use run-flat tires since no spare tire is provided by Toyota. These run-flat tires are defective in that they wear out exceedingly fast. Mine are nearly worn out at 17k miles on my 2004 Sienna. At a equipment and labor replacement cost of ~ $1600 for all 4 tires, this is unacceptable. If you search the internet, this is a well known problem with the Siennas using run-flats. Tires should not cost me $100 per 1000 miles driven. Secondary issue with the tires is the safety. I have not experieced this problem, but other owners are stating that if the tire is cut, that it needs to be replaced immediately. Because run flats are new, there are hardly any places in the u. S. That stock these tires, let alone having the special equipment to install them. You'll see many owners have resorted to buying regular tires for their Siennas, then purchasing a spare tire and throwing it into the back of their van. This takes away from the utility of the van a great deal, since storage is a primary selling point of minivans. Please investigate this issue. Tires should last ~40k miles, and since these run flats are so expensive, replacing every 15k miles puts a huge cost on the owner that Toyota never warned new owners. I would expect Toyota to cover replacement cost of these tires until a suitable replacement is developed, or find a way to use regular tires and store the spare somewhere on the vehicle without taking up the advertised passenger storage space. Thank you for your support and assistance, -brian armer.

39 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

I was driving home from washington state, and noticed that my driver's side rear tire tread was seperating from the sidewall and steal. My son then found that the passanger rear was doing the same thing. I had to call home and find the closest place to replace the tires. Eugene. Or. Was the closest and it was 49 miles. About 15 miles outside of eugene, the tread on the drivers side was thrown off of my car and caused damage to my van. I regained control and got the car to costco where I replaced all 4 tires.

40 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/09/2005

Consumer bridgestone tires showed wear at 7000 miles. The consumer contact three bridgestone dealer and they indicated that the liability should be with Toyota motor company. Toyota was called and they to the consumer to seek reimbursement or other remedies from bridgestone (bridgestone turanza el42. ).

41 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/08/2005

All four dunlop sp sport 4000t dsst run-flat tires on my 2004 Toyota Sienna xle awd are completely worn after 13,800 miles. These are original tires. Both Toyota and dunlop do not want to take any responsibility for this issue despite the numerous complaints being made here and elsewhere reported in depth in the internet. A reasonable consumer would expect that these tires would be engineer to last more than 10k miles given they are each $300 a piece. Please assist me and numerous other Toyota owners with similar problems by conducting a defect investigation and ultimately assisting in a formal recall of these tires and the associated problems causing the tire failures. I am afraid that replacing the tires every year at a cost of $1400 won't solve the problem which appears to have some relationship to vehicle alignment issues as well as poor tire longevity.

42 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

I own a 2005 Toyota Sienna awd. At 7500 miles the front tires had excessive wear, now with 9000 miles the dealer is recommending me to change all 4 tires. Currently I am negotiating with Toyota to pay for the tire replacement. They have offered little assurance to help and no commitment for future problems. I know this is a major problem with many awd Toyota owners. Toyota needs to be held accountable/responsible.

43 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/06/2005

I would like to report unexpected tread degradation on my 2004 Sienna xle limited awd. At 17k miles the tires needed replacing.

44 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/29/2005

We purchased a Toyota Sienna 2004 in November 2003. I was told yesterday that the tires are so worn they are dangerous to drive on. The car is only 17 months old with 20. 000 miles. We have had the car in for all its routine services. The tires have been rotated 3 times, air pressure and alignment is fine. Consumers have the right to know before they purchase this product that the tire will wear down quickly and cost $1300 to replace them. Three hundred dollars per tire. But most important is the safety issue. The consumer is not aware that the tires can wear so quickly and pose a hazard to themselves and their family. Neither the tire makers(bridgestone nor Toyota will take responsibility. We are hoping that you will look into this matter.

45 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/23/2005

Toyota has been placing dunlop sp40's on their Sienna van's at least from 2000 to 2003. They are extremely unsafe and are prone to premature wear (less than half of their 80,000 kilometers. Please refer to 1010tires. Com under reviews for that tire (very numerous). My tires were worn over 75% at 33000kms. Even prior to wear they are extremely unreliable esp. In the snow and rain---I had spun out on a straight stretch of snow covered highway several times entering oncoming traffic the winter previous. The Sienna has a high safety rating but it is in fact an unsafe/hazardous vehicle by virtue of the tires placed upon it. I believe Toyota is aware of the problem but will not admit any responsibility. Through much argument, goodyear has replaced the tires with new ones giving me 50% off (I shouldn't have to pay anything because I have been placed in a position of purchasing new tires when I should not have to for the next 3-4 years). Toyota refuses to compensate me the other 50% and will not admit to this unsafe (but no doubt profitable) relationship that it has with dunlop/goodyear. There is no doubt in my mind that these tires are substandard if not defective and I am upset that dunlop/goodyear and Toyota had placed my family in danger because of their arrangement. I had bought the van because my wife and I had a new baby and had trusted the safety rating boasted by Toyota (unaware that the safety was compromised by the tires that they choose to utilize on the van).

46 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/02/2005

I am the owner of a 2004 Toyota Sienna le awd van. On April 2, 2005, my family and I were on a trip approximately 200 miles from home. During that trip, the light to inflate the tires came on. We inflated the tires and the light turned off. Then, it came on very soon after the initial inflation. My husband took the car to several tire places, then finally a Toyota dealership to treat the problem. The dealership informed us that our van was out of alignment and that two of our tires (they are of the "run-flat" variety) were severely worn, one even past the wear bars. At that time, our van had approximately 20,500 miles on it. We had taken it for regularly recommended servicing at a Toyota dealership in our hometown, including two prior episodes of having the tires rotated. The most recent tire rotation occurred at the 15,000 mile check-up. At that time, the dealership noted no excessive wear on our tires. In fewer than 5,000 miles, apparently, the tires had worn down beyond what is safe. The consequence was the need to buy four new tires at the 20,500 mile mark. Both Toyota motor CO. And our local Toyota dealership indicated to me today upon inquiry that we can expect only approximately 20,000 miles from these tires. I am concerned that these tires can wear down so quickly and fail.

47 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/02/2005

All 4 tires (dunlop run flat) on my 2004 Toyota Sienna awd xle limited have (according to the dealer, miller Toyota of manassas) become worn on the outsides edges of the tires indicating (according to the dealer) that I have been riding around with under inflated tires and it is my fault. I informed him that the low pressure warning light never came on and that I don't think he was right. I have asked him to erplace the tires under the warranty for faulty equipment and he said that I needed to talk to the tire manufacturer. I told him no and that he needs to take it up with the regional Toyota sales rep. I am in the process of doing this now. The dealer (in typical low fashion) pressured me into buying the replacements myself and not attempt any warranty claim. I declined as the 4 tires would cost me $1350 (!!!!!) to replace. That is absolutely unbelievable for minivan tires. My complaint is that this tire wear is not a unique situation as I have read many other incidents of premature tire wear for these run flat tires and that Toyota needs to take responsiblity for these problems and replace the tires with something better suited to this minivan.

48 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/16/2004

I have run flat tires on my 2005 Sienna (purchased October 2004). I also bought a set of winter tires & rims) in December 2004 and since then I am alternating them 6 months of the year. Have currently 21,000 miles on my vehicle. The dunlop tires are almost worn out, although I probably put on them mo more than 12-13,000 miles. Part of the reason I believe is that when I bought the car(even when I test drove it) I noticed a rough ride and a pull to the left, but could not wait for the dealer to order another car, so I took it home (I bought it from a dealer out of town). Also I was blaming the tire thread geometry for the rough ride, and the dealership offered me to change the tires for the cheaper ones bridgestone, but I had to pay like $80 for the operation, so I decided not to. The rough drive continued until I decided to take it to my local dealership who found out that it was misaligned. The did a free alignment but the car would still pull to the left. This, I was told, was normal, since the tires had been worn unevenly, so now they had to get the normal wear again. Now the car no longer pulls, but this comes a the cost of having excessively worn tires. I see that this is not an unique case.

49 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

51 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2002 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/09/2004

Driving south on I-15 north of las vegas, tire tread on passenger side rear wheel separated without warning. It was a hot day (around 110 degrees) and the highway speed there is 75 m. P. H. The tread flew up and smashed the side window of the Sienna minivan, tore off part of the side fender and damaged the sliding door. The tires had been well maintained and had been inpected within the previous month at the Toyota dealer. Nonetheless, firestone has refused to compensate us for the monetary loss and has tried to shift the blame to us, saying there was proof that the tire had been run low, etc. (we had to drive on the tire after we lost the tread as we were in a remote area. Since there was still air in the tire I drove slowly to where we could get help. ) thus I have argued that the wear found by their "engineers" was due to driving on a treadless tire which was losing air. I have requested firestone to send us back the damaged tire. The damage repair bill was $1780, plus the cost of the rental car etc.
