Toyota Tacoma owners have reported 4 problems related to accelerator pedal sensor (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Tacoma based on all problems reported for the Tacoma.
Sudden acceleration on Feb 25, 2020. I was pulling into a parking spot, low speed (under 10 mph), right hand turn, vehicle suddenly accelerated. I pressed hard on the brake, locking the brakes up and squealing tires. The truck lurched to a stop. No damage, no other cars near where I was parking. This was a normal routine stop at a local gas station that make some mornings before work to purchase a fountain drink. Unknown cause - ecu/software, gas pedal sensors, electrical noise ? year, make, model: 2015 Toyota Tacoma truck - purchased new Dec 2014. Vehicle has been routinely maintained and in excellent condition. New tires on Feb 7, 2020 at 75,329 miles, similar size as original. Mileage: 76093 at time of incident fyi - I am an engineer at nasa - johnson space center.

After driving for approximately 2 hours, on three separate occasions, the vehicle would intermittently lose significant power. It felt as though I had taken my foot off the throttle. After my own investigation, I learned that Toyota has a history of this problem, particularly with their 2003/2004 model Tacoma's. Evidently, their accelerator pedal position sensor (part of their throttle by wire design) fails. This created a few serious safety situations for me when the throttle failed to respond when needed. After reporting this to the dealer, they inspected the vehicle and did determine the apps was at fault. Numerous accounts of this happening with other owner's is readily available via the various bulletin boards on the web. Compounding the issue, is the fact that this sensor cannot be replaced without replacing the entire throttle body assembly at a cost of $1000 or so. Toyota initially responded that they've never heard of this issue yet others have reported to them prior to me which indicates either they have a very poor process for logging issues or are trying to avoid another recall.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle would dramatically decelerate without warning. Also, when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not accelerate unless the pedal was completely depressed to the floor. The dealer stated that the maff air sensor was causing the failure. The dealer cleaned the sensor. The contact returned to the dealer a week later and they stated that the catalytic converter was melted and was the cause of the failure. After careful inspection, it was determined that the converter was not melted. A professional mechanic stated that the supercharger heat output effected the accelerator pedal positioning sensor and was causing the failure. The failure mileage was 9,000 and current mileage was 17,000.

Faulty apps (accelerator pedal position sensor). Vehicle is designed with a combination of mechanical and drive by wire throttle body. When accelerating from a stopped position accelerator pedal is depressed with no response to engine or vehicle movement. This poses a safety threat if driver is in a life or death situation and cannot move vehicle out of harms way.
