Clutch Broken Problems of Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 4 problems related to clutch broken (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Clutch Broken problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/15/2014

Over-40 driver, decades of experience driving cars with manual transmissions, no modifications to the car since new. Car had 13,000 miles at the time of this incident. Accelerating on the freeway, no indication of any problems when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. . . But when shifting from 3rd to 4th at approximately 50mph, the gear selector lever had become difficult to move. Subsequent shifts from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th at approximately 65mph (no longer accelerating) were even more challenging. I exited the freeway, shifting as needed with ever-increasing difficulty. At rest, with the transmission in 1st gear and the clutch fully depressed, the car continued to creep forward as if the clutch were not disengaged. I was able to shift into 2nd and limp the car to a nearby dealer. Dealership diagnosis: a clutch spring broke off, "bounced around and destroyed the clutch plate. ".

2 Clutch Broken problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

When accelerating after having slowed down for a turn, the clutch fails to engage and I get a false neutral. The rpm goes all the way to 5000, 6000, but the car doesn't speed up because it's in neutral, even when the gear selector is in d. This is difficult to replicate because it happens spontaneously. Volkswagen refuses to recognize problem because it cannot be immediately replicated at the dealership.

3 Clutch Broken problem of the 2005 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/13/2009

My clutch failed prematurely because of a defective dual mass flywheel. Vw maintains that clutch failed as a result of poor driving skills. Dual mass flywheel in this vehicle collects too much oil and silicone due to poor product design. This buildup causes the clutch to overheat and prematurely wear. Vw refuses to replace flywheel and clutch, which they state is not covered by the warranty. The flywheel should be replaced under warranty because of its faulty design, and the clutch should be replaced as a result of the poorly made flywheel.

4 Clutch Broken problem of the 2000 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/13/2003

My 2000 vw Gti 1. 8t manual transmission's clutch keeps failing. I admit I drove it aggressively when I first bought it. . . After all, that's how they advertise the vehicle, as a sporty, fast car. Well, I've replaced it three times (yes, I'm on my fourth clutch in four years!!!) and even though after each repair I've reduced the aggressiveness of my driving to the point where I'm practically a little old granny now, the durn thing keeps wearing out after about a year, and I can feel my current one getting mushy, seeming to slip, like it's about to go out again. One incident it happened on the highway, and I was lucky I wasn't killed. Because I had to coast to get off the freeway, I felt I needed to be as far to the right in the 'vehicle breakdown lane' as I could. Well, there was a large chunk of metal, a large water spigot or something, lying in the middle of the emergency lane and, since I couldn't very well swerve back into the traffic speeding next to me at well over twice my own velocity, I ended up hitting it and tearing up my transmission casing (the 'crash' I indicated). This is getting ridiculous. Something needs to be done.
