Driving to work on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 7:45am, an indication notification came on that the coolant reservoir was extremely low. I pulled over into a parking lot of a donut shop on leffingwell rd and meyer rd and popped my hood open. Coolant reservoir was completely empty. A friend was called to come pick me up and drive to a vw dealership to pick up coolant and distilled water from a liquor store. Coolant was topped off. Next day, car was taken into an auto repair shop and confirmed that thermostat housing failed and dumped coolant.

Plastic thermostat housing failure-- cracks and leaking coolant. While getting an oil change done at a local Volkswagen dealership, the mechanic pointed out that there is a coolant leak and showed me where the leak is coming from (thermostat housing/water pump) the coolant is slowly seep out of the crack on the underside of the thermostat housing, I have been adding coolant every other week. As the loss of coolant often trips the low coolant warning if the level isn't maintained. I feel like I'm not the only one with this issue, after reading online Volkswagen community. Many 2015-2020 Gti owners are also having the same problem. The car overheated couple times when stuck in new york traffic, I would like Volkswagen manufacture to address this issue and give all the Gti owners an explanation to why their part fails less than a few years of ownership.

Car has under 200 miles. Engine repeatedly turns off once stationary, at stops, such as intersections, yield zones, and freeway on and off ramps with traffic lights or stop signs. The engine turns off without warning or notifications, and has to be restarted by driver. Unknown components/systems. Taken to vw service center, was road tested, and they were unable to duplicate complaint and noted vw corp had advised resets.
Brand new car 6sp manual transmission. The car died when rolling to a stop in neutral twice. This was on my first extended drive in the car after purchasing.
While driving, the cel came on. We had the car scanned for codes. Researching the codes, we believed the issue to be crank walk. We took the car to a local shop who confirmed that thrust washers had dislodged and begun deteriorating. This is essentially a catastrophic failure as the car cannot be driven without causing significant further damage to the engine. Most cost effective solution is to replace the engine ($3500 + labor). We have spoken with vw and presented them with 17 other cases of the same failure since 1/1/2019, but they are unwilling to work with us since we did not go to a vw dealership. The vw dealership labor rate is ~50% more expensive than our shop which is equally as qualified to identify an issue such as this. Vw executive group advised me that if we took the car to a dealership so they could diagnose the issue, there would be potential for good faith assistance but nothing is guaranteed. That would require us being prepared to take on upwards of $1000 additional expense for the same repair process. This expectation is unreasonable and this type of failure, with the frequency we've been able to see indicates a serious engineering flaw that is costing owners excessive amounts of money for repair almost immediately after the warranty has expired.
Tl the contact owns a 2018 Volkswagen Gti. While driving, the vehicle lost power and accelerated slower than normal. In addition, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. When the vehicle was powered off and restarted, the failure remained. The contact was a certified mechanic and stated that he used Volkswagen factory software to diagnose the vehicle. The contact found failure codes pertaining to the loss of camshaft synchronization and failure of cylinder two. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
When coming to a stop the car dies ocassionally. I am concerned for my safety when the car dies at a stop. And I cannot move forward without restarting the car. This has happened 10+ times.
Engine is losing coolant. Started at ~50k miles marked. Coolant needs to be topped off. Now the car is at 71k miles. Low coolant triggered warning light again! coolant needs to be topped off. There appears to be white crusty marked near the engine oil pan and seem to be coming off from the thermostat housing.
When down shifting the transmission shifts roughly. (only in traffic) when down shifting from 3,2,1 the brake pedal for some reason decides to brake harder than supposed to, making the car jerky. ( regular driving and coming up to a stop light. ) automatic transmission and it's the autobahn edition. . Also when the car is idling (cold start) the engine vibrates alot more than normal.
Ongoing engine misfire issues. After 3 visits to dealership and replacement of coils, fuses, relays, etc, root cause determined to be a short between the after run coolant pump which causes a voltage draw and confuses the ecm. After talking with vw technician, I learned that this same exact part on Audi vehicles is under a safety recall for the shorting issue that my pump is having because the short can cause fires. However, the vw part is not under recall. My family could have been put in grave danger because this part is in my car and has not been recalled. In addition, even though the part has failed, vw will not compensate me for the repair, so I have no choice but to pay $500 out of pocket to fix a safety hazard in my vehicle. For reference, Audi recall number is 18v229000.

The manufacturer stated that since the abs module control failed to work, the recall repair could not be performed. The failure mileage was 96,000.
Recently I preformed a routine maintenance check on my vehicle and as suggested by all mark 5 Gti owners I checked the cam follower. I found the cam follower completely worn through. I contacted vw to make sure I was under the extended warranty handed out to all 2006-2007 and some 2008 owners to find out I was not under the warranty extension. Right now I have a the piece off my old cam follower somewhere in my engine and vw refuses to service my vehicle due to their new improved model apparently that many other owners are experiencing. Vw knows that the cam follower is faulty but refuses to service many other 2008 owners such as myself. Right now it feels like my car is a ticking time bomb with the cam follower piece somewhere in the engine.
I purchased my car new and always had the dealer I bought it at do the service work. At the 100000 mile service interval I asked what I had to do with the timing chain and was assured that nothing needed to be looked at or replaced. At approximately 130000 miles I was traveling on I-88 at speed with heavy traffic when all of a sudden I lost all power and had to coast thru 4 lanes of traffic to make it to the right shoulder. I let the car cool down and when I was able to get it started 30 minutes later I nursed it home. The next day I was able to drive it to the dealer where I had all my service work done and they informed me that the timing chain had jumped, most likely the timing chain adjuster had failed, and it would cost between $7000 and $10000 to repair. This took place on Sep 20 2016. The car is still sitting in my driveway since I have been in and out of work for the last year and had to move in the meantime.
The cam follower has prematurely warn out causing the intake camshaft to wear prematurely as well, which has in turn caused the high pressure fuel pump to fail. This is a long-term, degenerative issue. Volkswagen has extended the warranty on these parts for some 2006-2008 Gti's but not my VIN. Their warranty extension was not broad enough as these same parts have failed in my car.
The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Gti. While driving at a low speed, the high pressure fuel pump failed without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the camshaft was fractured. The fuel pressure pump and the camshaft were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,145.

Engine compartment caught fire while driving and vehicle was quickly consumed in flames. Power loss was initially noticed on the highway, but vehicle caught fire and started to burn on a side street while stopped.
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low coolant level warning light illuminated. The contact stated she had to stop to refill the coolant. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed water pump. The water pump needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the failure had been persistent, and the water pump had been replaced three times previously. The contact was informed that when the oil leaks onto the gasket, it causes the housing of the water pump to crack, which causes the engine to overheat. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Car lost acceleration at approx 40 mph on 4 lane road. Dealer diagnostic claims broken cam chain. Dealer did not check warranty extension part cam follower which is known to fail (per cory from vwoa) but has another warranty extension part intake camshaft on repair list. There are several hundreds of these incidents happening with a quick search.
I purchased my 2009 Gti Feb 2015 and the carfax was great; however, the abs control module randomly failed about two months later causing lose of steering and control, this occured while driving in traffic and it was very scary. Loud warning beeps went off and warning lights started flashing. The warning lights continued flashing until I turned it off. When I restarted the engine, the warning lights were no longer lit and drove it home. I tested my car again minutes after arriving home. It seemed fine, but then it happened again after just a minute of driving it. I took it to the vw dealer service center. They diagnosed the issue to be the abs module. It needs to be replaced and the cost is $2,260. I called vw and they do not cover the repair costs. This needs to be addressed immediately considering the numerous complaints and the danger this malfunction imposses.
This morning on the way to work, I experienced shaking and hesitation upon accelerating. I turned around and went back home and immediately got the car into the dealer. I was told that the number 2 ignition coil was failing, which was causing the problem. . Read more...
While traveling at 55 mph in sixth gear on the new york state thruway, I suddenly lost power and the engine abruptly turned off. I consequently quickly decelerated and was almost rearended before being able to turn onto the shoulder. I smelled a burning odor and got out of my car. Eventually, the vw dealership advised me that the #2 coil had failed and caught fire. Consequently, the wiring harness for the ignition coil and plastic cover surrounding the coil had been destroyed by the fire. This is the second incident involving an ignition coil on this vehicle. Approximately 12 months ago, the #4 ignition coil failed leading to rapid deceleration as I was driving. This appears to be a chronic problem with the ignition coils that may result in otherwise avoidable accidents.
