Vehicle Shudder Problems of Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 5 problems related to vehicle shudder (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/06/2017

(dsg automatic) harsh shifting from park to reverse, and from reverse to drive. Hesitation from a stop to go. Car feels like it shudders or jerks from a stop to go, and when braking to a stop. Dealer states it's a faulty mechatronics unit and needs to be replaced. Same issues that plagued the last generation of vehicles, and vw was forced to issue a recall due to safety concerns. Dealer tried to get vw to cover cost of repair, but they refused. Dealer wants $2500 to repair. Vehicle currently has 47,346 miles. Currently discussing legal action with an attorney.

2 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

Aug 11th I turned a corner in my 2008 vw Gti with ~29,8xx miles on the odometer, accelerated briskly in 2nd gear at approx 4000 rpm the car bucked and shuddered and lost power. When the rpm's dropped about 500rpm the motor regained power until about 4000 rpm and then the car bucked, shuddered and lost power again. This continued to happen as long as the accelerator peddle was depressed. This happened in every gear. Luckily this happened on a long freeway entrance ramp prior to my attempt to merge with freeway traffic. I took it to the dealer and the ecu had a low fuel pressure code. This apparently is a known issue and they replaced the cam, high pressure fuel pump and cam follower. Apparently the high pressure fuel pump is driven off the cam and over time punches a hole in the cam follower and then rides directly on the cam shaft causing scoring and resulting in the failure I experienced. I specifically asked to see the old parts as I wanted to ascertain the amount of metal shavings that were now floating around in my engine. For whatever reason they did not save the parts and sent them back to vw since this repair was under warranty.

3 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

The mechatronic unit in my dsg transmission was found to be defective. It would cause the car to shudder and jerk back and forth when starting from a dead stop. It would also do the same thing while in reverse.

4 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

My 08 Gti has very strange actions when I am driving my automatic dsg transmission. It will either lurch forward or slam into gears. At times it feel like it stalls as the car shakes violently. I know people that have changed their mechatroni units and found it's just a cpu problem but when I take this to the dealer there is issues with them stating they can't duplicate the problem. My car has caused me to get into an accident in which somebody rear ended me because my car slammed into 1st gear as I braked. This scares me very much when the vehicles gear doesn't seem to always be in the proper gear.

5 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

This is a continuation from chris dunn 2007 vw Gti after the most "fix" for the transmission problems - one week ago - the car has developed another serious safety problem. When starting the car and pressing on the gas, you hear a loud thunk and feel hard hit and the car jerks (lunges?) forward about 5 feet. Since this fix, one week ago, the car not only does the lunging forward but now is also nearly stalling. After being at a stop and you depress the gas the car shakes and has the feeling it will stall unless you give it more gas. It then begins to accelerate slowly at about 1/3 regular power. This recently happened as I was crossing at a four-way stop and because of the hesitation I nearly got hit again. They also replaced the instrument panel for electrical issues caused every time it was hot that caused lack of instrument panel lights and all display info would not be visible. You didn't know what gear you were in,no radio, miles per gallon,or any warnings, etc. However, this was an unrelated problem not the trans problem which will get me killed. I have exhausted my options, have received no cooperation from dealership that serviced the car which is closer than the dealer I purchased from. The first time I had the transmission problem, I took to where I bought it. There was a major delay between throttle input and vehicle acceleration. They drove the car and duplicated the transmission problem of throttle delay. They said the car shifted at 1000-1500 rpm's past redline and asked if I had done performance enhancing tuning to the ecu. ---- I had not, ----this was a brand new car. They had me sign a paper to that effect, which I have. They said there was probably transmission damage to the car or there "would be future transmission damage" and sent me on my way. I called vwof America and got a "too bad goodbye". Since then the car in for repair at least 8-10 times, several days at a time ---and I am afraid to drive it. I am getting no help.
