3 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/19/2006

On October 19, 2006, while driving my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, the abs warning lights came on the dash. According to the owner's manual this indicated a serious problem that could effect the brakes on the car. On October 26, 2006 I took the car to fischer's foreign cars, inc. For repair. They told me the abs control module was defective and needed to be replaced. The cost of the repair was $702. 93 and they said there was a recall for this problem (they gave me a copy of the recall letter from Volkswagen of America inc(voa) dated March 12, 2002) and that I should file a claim with voa for reimbursement. I purchased the car new on February 16, 2002, and never received a recall notice for this problem. On November 4, 2006, I sent a registered letter to voa requesting reimbursement for the repair costs. I also enclosed copies of the recall letter and the repair bill. About November 11, 2006, I received a telephone call from a woman at voa and she said that the recall letter did not cover my car and that because the factory warranty had expired in February 2006, that voa would not honor my request for reimbursement. She said the decision was final. I can't understand why the recall would not cover my car when the problem indicated in the recall letter is the same as mine. It seems that the recall should have included more cars when it is obvious from my defective abs module that the problem was not corrected. At the time of the failure, my car had 38,631 miles on it. I am concerned that there are other cars, like mine, that should have when covered by the recall or a subsequent recall to correct the defective abs module. I believe someone should revisit this issue to determine if the recall should be expanded to include more cars.

4 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/27/2006

I was driving my 2001 vw Jetta and I braked suddenly. Brake light and audio alarm came on. Took the car into garage for repair. Was told that it needed new abs control unit. The garage checked for recalls and found that this same part had been recalled on other vw models.

5 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/20/2006

My situation is very similar to odi id number : 10136903. I have a 2003 Jetta. I was driving about 65 mph, my abs warning light turned on, air bag warning light turned on, and my radio turned off. After stopping my car, it wouldn't start again. I had it towed to mechanic, who determined that my fuse panel (above the battery) had melted and he was very surprised that my car hadn't caught on fire. He replaced the fuse panel. A few days later, my car failed to start again. A jump start started it. Next day, my car failed to start again. A jump start started it. I drove it straight to mechanic. My alternator, which was fine last week, is now fried (after two drives), most likely because the fuse panel burnt it out. The alternator in my 2003 Jetta is a 90 amp alternator. Vw stopped making these because they aren't powerful enough for the cars. I repeat, 90 amp alternators are no longer made for my car because it requires 120 amp alternator. Hmm.

6 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

I have been having an intermittent problem with the anti-lock brakes on my 2000 vw Jetta tdi. The abs "activates" when going very slowly (less than 10 mph) and when applying minimal pressure on the brake pedal, and sometimes when not touching the brakes at all. It first happened over a year ago, and the dealer changed an abs harness connector, and the problem did not recur until about 4 or 5 months ago. I took it back to the dealer several times, and the problem occurred for them, but they were unable to determine the cause, even after calling vw technicians. They replaced a wheel speed sensor at my expense, but said if that didn't fix it, they suggested replacing the abs control module, but they really didn't know if that was the problem. The problem still occurs intermittently, and I noted on an internet message board that a number of others seem to be having the same problem (link:. . Read more...

7 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/08/2003

Recently, my abs warning light came on. Upon diagnostic evaluation by Volkswagen (vw), I was told that abs control unit was faulty and needed replacement. When I informed them that I had researched this and discovered that there was a national recall on the '01 Jetta abs control unit, I was told that this was true, but in fact my particular unit, as discerned by their diagnostic evaluation, did not qualify for recall. I was offered a 50/50 split on parts and labor by the dealership b/c the car is only several months out of the warranty period. Of course, after turning blue in the face trying to explain my dilemma to the vw customer relations dept (that's a real joke; they did nothing for me), I was left w/no choice but to accept their offer, as this was a safety issue and needed to be addressed. Clearly, my particular unit should have been on the recall list b/c it was faulty and reared it's ugly head only 3. 5 months outside of the warranty period. It's a real shame that vw is more concerned w/taking a customer for all he/she is worth one time around w/out any regard to maintaining true customer relations for the long run. The only satisfaction I could have at this point would be a full refund on the labor/parts charges for this repair. Taking responsibility for this problem, and acknowledging the undoubtedly myriad other customers affected who also did not "qualify" for recall, should be vw's stance. Corporations in this country have run amok and the consumer is paying-$25000 in my case, and a host of problems ranging from paint issues to the current issue. This was my first new car and I was very excited about purchasing it. Vw has left me feeling violated and played for a fool.

8 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

The consumer rented a vehicle for two days while her vehicle was being repaired for a recall on the abs electronic control unit, the consumer received a reimbursement check but it was not for the full amount paid, the consumer was told that Volkswagen only reimbursed $25 a day for rental vehicles, the consumer stated that this was never disclosed to her and she is seeking the remainder of the money for reimbursement.
