Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 18 problems related to brake disc (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
Rear brakes I feel their is a defect. Have replaced them once at about under 13 thousand miles and again now over 13 thousand miles the vehicle has the same issue. It is not reasonable for rear brakes to wear down before the front. Now Volkswagen is giving me the run around. It has less than a year since purchase and I have to spend another 5 hundred dollars to get these fixed. I can be going through brakes like that.

28k miles. . . Rear brakes worn down into the metal, requiring new rear brakes and rotors. Front have 75% remaining. Vw authorizes $150 assistance on labor but refuses to call brakes defective.

Rear brakes were sqeualing for months. Took into dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate noise. Finally rear brakes went all together and had them replaced at another dealership. Dealer said they should not have gone after just over 30,000 miles so Volkswagen covered half of costs. One week later picked up car as I was driving home malfunction indication light came on. Took into dealership again. All three oxygen sensors had blown. Day after picking up from dealership passenger window fell into door and is currently back in being fixed. I know these are all common problems with 1999 Jetta. Vw was somewhat helpful on cost but will do nothing now because they "have already been too kind". This car is dangerous and I do not feel comfortable driving it anymore. Now I have to cover the cost of an early lease termination for fear of injury or more $ for damage repairs.

Volkswagenh of America has not been supportive or helpful in resolving these complaints nor have the Volkswagen technicians been able to diagnosis the true problem; they just fix the problem "symptoms". No safety defect listed.

Vw dealer refuses to provide a solution to this problem, nor do they recognize the brake failures. The vehicle's fuel injectors have not been repaired and was serviced on 11-28-01 by the dealer. They refuse to cooperate with me in working these matters out in a fair manner.
When applying brakes there is a loud streaking grinding noise. Dealerdship is aware of problem.

Engine consumes about 1+ quart of oil every 1,500 miles. Front rotors need to be replaced at 30,000 miles, while brake pads are less than 50% used. Refrigerant in air conditioner gone at around 30,000 miles with normal use in mild climate.
Rear brake pads replaced 5 times, rear rotors replaced 3 times, new compound pads replaced 2 times- car is having additional changes performed July 30,2000 . Manufacturer called 12/5/2000, letters(certified mail) on March 23 2002 and June 9,2001- July 25 2001, manufacturer recognizes that 'the particular non-conformity that wxists in your vehicle presents a potenial safety concern'.
1. The rear brake line snapped off while installing new pads. The brake line snapped a clean cut, no bends etc. The brake line appeared to be very brittle and was probably a result of metal fatigue or faulty original equipment. It should be noted that the rear brake pads were completely worn out at just 33964 miles while the front pads appeared to be nearly new. This is a reverse in normal wear out patterns and was probably caused by the calipers overheating/locked up etc. 2. The rear brake pads were completely worn out after only 33964 miles of which most of the travel was on non-stop on interstate highways. Either the rear brake pads were defective or there is something wrong with the design of the vw Jetta, which caused the rear pads to wear out long before the front.
While on I-95 between two exits the right rear passenger's side tire exploded and punctured a whole in the gas tank. Dealer told consumer that consumer was responsible that must have run over something.
I purchased the car in 1996. I immediately had problems with the brakes and had to bring the car in many times and was told that nothing was wrong. After the 24 month warranty was up I was told that I needed front rotors and pads and rear calipers and pads. I argued with them (vw America) and they said that they couldn't help because it was out of warranty. I have proof of them saying nothing was wrong for 2 years and then out of a sudden I needed over $500. Worth of work. (tiresize: 15 inch)( dot number: tire size: 15 inch ).

Consumer experiencing several problems with vehicle. When driving in wet weather conditions the windshield wipers will cut off. This problem is intermittent. At times, will not function at all. Consumer has contacted the dealer . Also, replaced transmission/ throttle body and alternator. In addition, front brake rotors failed and front pads cracked/engine idles/bucks and stalls. Engine check light comes on/off.
Back rear brakes grinded to a stop needed new pads & rotors not covered under warranty.
Freezing door locks, broken window regulators, inability to use aftermarket disc brake pads and other items are acknowledged by vw in "technical bulletins" but customer must pay for their errors. I am happy to provide additional info. About this if contacted. Customer should not have to pay for manufacturer errors (acknowledged by manufacturer. ).
While driving at 15 mph driver heard a loud pop. Brake pedal went to the floor and continued this way until the driver pulled into a parking lot. There were no brakes.
