Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 71 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
The abs module needs to be restore or replace. The lights on the dashboard that comes on includes engine, brakes, steering, abs, and e. T. C. (electronic throttle control). What actually happens when it comes on is it hard to steer, acceleration goes slow, beeping hearing test noise frequents , gas gauge goes to e, and speedometer stops working. This happens frequently and doesn't matter what road or highway I'm what makes it more dangerous when its hard to steel and the brake lights are constantly flashing.

Driving home when exiting off to the hwy my Jetta will flash the abs, brake and esc lights while beeping. Took car to mechanic it was relayed that the abs module was bad. I refuse to take car to vw dealer because I already have issues with them about the erc valve and diesel fuel particulate filter (engine light constantly stays on) being 1 of the issues vw has admitted being faulty but still not doing anything about it. To get the abs fixed it's going to be over $2500 and the have the erc & diesel fuel particulate filter fixed is over $3000. Each of these items are faulty and should be taken care of by the dealer with a cent paid from my pocket. Both are life threatening faults that eventually could lead to my death or deaths of others. I have no choice as this is my sole source of transportation so I have to drive it. Even though vw admits fault they are doing nothing to help except for offering "consolation" gifts - none will cover cost to fix car and get myself and others out of danger. Vw needs to be held responsible.
I was approaching a red light when suddenly the abs brake light came on, followed by every light on my dashboard. My car stalled and came to a complete stop. Fortunately I was in the right hand lane of a semi-busy street and was able to wait until my car started up again. Had I been on the freeway with my two small children in the backseat, I have no doubt that this would have caused a serious accident or death. I was told that I need to replace my complete abs system. I have approximately 72,000 miles on this car and have serviced it regularly. There is no reason for a part which affects the electrical system and safety of the driver should go out this soon unless it is a defective part - period!!! I know that hundreds have experienced the same problem as me as I have read their complaints online. Vw needs to immediately make the repairs necessary to correct this problem in order to make their vehicles safe to the public and before anyone is injured or dies. If vw ignores this problem, instead of dealing with repairs, vw will be dealing a class action suit. Please take note, vw.
Upon driving through a highway interchange at a lower rate of speed the electronic stability control disconnected with an amber solid light on the instrument cluster indicating so, the anti-lock braking system also disengaged indicated as well with an amber solid light on the instrument cluster, and the brake light was flashing red on the instrument cluster. Upon turning off the car and turning it back on it resets, however the issue is becoming more common as time goes on.
Anti-lock brake and stability control failure during braking event. During braking event on slippery surface: 1. ) abs engaged as normal at start of braking event. 2. ) abs stopped working and wheels locked up resulting in vehicle rotation. 3. ) stability control and brake warning lights came on accompanied by a beep. 4. ) after braking event warning lights remained on and abs/stability were non-functional. 5. ) after car restart warning lights were gone and abs/stability control worked. Under gentle braking on slippery surface abs works. Able to consistently recreate issue with hard braking or hard acceleration on slippery surface. There is no indication of an issue prior to failure. Car was checked by vw dealership prior to failure and no error codes were returned pertaining to abs/stability control.
The contact owned a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving at approximately 45 mph and applying the brake pedal, the abs, the stability, and the brake warning lights illuminated. In addition, there was a loud abnormal noise and the vehicle spun out of control. The vehicle flipped three times and crashed into a bush. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries. The contact did not disclose if a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rear passenger axle was fractured. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Brake lights don't function due to faulty brake light switch. Subject of two previous recalls.

Car would not accelerate properly, requiring the pedal to be completely depressed to achieve any acceleration even to low speeds. At this point, a brake warning light appeared for the first time. Vehicle was brought to dealer, jim ellis vw in the atlanta area who tested the model and determined the abs module had failed. After replacing the abs module the brakes locked during a test drive by the service staff. Subsequently the brake booster and brake master cylinder were replaced. Owner believes that this early failure of so many components on a newer, very low mileage vehicle likely represents manufacturing defect and could have resulted in serious injury.

The abs and parking brake light began to flash and beep constantly and the vehicle lost control for a small amount of time causing me to swerve a little bit but I regained control. I restarted the vehicle and it continues to flash and beep. This is said to be a known issue within the 09 models (the abs pump and module failure), but the company has yet to issue a recall to cover the expense of replacement. It is said that, the abs pump and module failure can cause the vehicle's brakes to lock up and not allow movement in close situations which can result in an accident. This is a safety hazard.
Intermittent electrical problems from undetermined source for last year, ended up losing all lights on passenger side of car, and some lights/light function on driver's side, including brake lights, turn signals, headlights etc. Random security alarm going off without being able to turn it off, brake warning lights, traction control issues. After a quick internet search I became aware that this is a very common problem and known vw issue, and found f16 fuse to be melted along with a portion of the fuse box. Called the only vw dealer in the city 10/23/14 and was told I had two safety recalls on my car, one for an ecm software update and one for this electrical issue, neither of which I was notified of, yet have been notified to have the "diesel only" sticker installed, and haven't moved since long before I purchased the car. Dealer is not able to look at my vehicle until 10/27/14 and cannot provide a loaner car since Volkswagen won't reimburse them for that cost. Called Volkswagen customer service and spoke with doug, only to be told they could not authorize rental car reimbursement, and I would need to either shoulder that expense myself or continue driving the car in it's current state. Informed him that the car was not safe to be driven with the lighting issues, and fuse f16 being tied into abs as well, was told he couldn't help me. If they had done the correct thing, I wouldn't be left in an unsafe car to transport my family, due to their engineering design negligence.
I purchased my car back in October 2013. When I purchased my car, the mechanic said that he replaced the abs system. The lights were not on when I bought it. A few months later, out of the blue in about April 2014, I was turning my car on and the engine light, the abs light and the brake light all came on momentarily after turning my engine on as I was still in park. My car had close to 100,000 miles on it. The problem went away and shortly came back a week later. Ever since, it has been on. Every once in a while, all of the lights would go off. Luckily the lights all went off for a few days around my inspection time for the 2014 year and my car passed. Not even three days later they all came back on. This time October 2015 inspection is coming up and my lights are all on. Since the engine light is on, I cannot pass inspection. The code reader says it is a miscommunication error, or a u0121 error. I have done a lot of investigation and cleaning up the module and the contacts, cleared the codes, and my problem is still there.

I was stopped at a red light headed up hill. The light turned green I released the brakes & clutch while pushing the gas pedal. Much to my surprise this killed the engine. (I have driven sticks shifts for 50 years. ) the car stopped abruptly. The car behind me having seen my brake lights go off and my car begin to move had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting me. His honking and rude gestures were not necessary, but understandable. We were probably both cursing, I know I was. Complaining to the dealer I was amazed to learn it was supposed to do this! in addition, since the then I have figured out that if one sets the handbrake to soon the the electronics will eventually release the hydraulic pressure and the parking brake which had been pulled to the full extent of its travel now has several more clicks left to go and is not fully set. We learned this when the unoccupied car rolled down the driveway into a tree across the street. We were not pleased. (vw of America, however, was not concerned. ) to really keep us guessing this "feature" does not consistently activate - there is a range of degrees of slope where it may or may not come into play. Having it not hold when one expects it to has caused minor damage and several more close calls. Vwoa will not allow dealers to deactivate. Trying to replace the car with something more drivable I have learned this has become a widespread curse on many newer vehicles, even those with automatic transmissions. This idea is not only wrong it is wrong-headed. How in god's name can a deliberate brake malfunction be palmed off as a "safety feature". And if there are people so incompetent as to need or want this, why must the rest of us be plagued with it. Like most answers to any question no one has asked it is wrong. It is wrong and dangerous. And in case you hadn't noticed, annoying.

Brake light started to flash every once in a while. Brought my car into the dealer and the master cylinder was leaking into the vacuum chamber. No leaks on the ground as the leak was contained in the vacuum chamber - I was slowly running out of brake fluid. The dealer found the sealing surface of the master cylinder was not smooth - they figured it was leaking from new. Shop replaced master cylinder and vacuum chamber under warranty.
I purchased a new Volkswagen Jetta 2011, it has 3700 miles on board, during my trip to work (my speed was about 35m/h) before the intersection I tried to brake on red light, and my brakes did not work, they just stopped working, I pressed brake pedal 3 times till it began working again. I passed the intersection line and fortunately there was no any cars in front of me and very fortunately my speed was low. What could happen if I were on highway? that event happened after 3 days I passed service check at dealership. My car was towed to dealership and it was checked. After I was called for test drive and they were convincing me that everything was fine with the car, computer really showed 0 problems. I did not want to pick up my car and asked them to test the car till the problem appears again, because I think that is very major problem. In the end the problem occurred, and they realized that the problem really had place. I was given a report from Volkswagen service and I saw that the cause was: internal failure at brake master cylinder, so they replaced: 1 master cylinder, 2 brake fluid and 1 gasket were replaced. It means that car really had a problem in spite it is new. Now I am afraid the same problem not to occur again. I am trying to replace the car, but Volkswagen does not do that, they tell me that the car was repaired under warranty. Now, when I am driving that car, I always try my brakes, before intersection, on highways and everywhere. I do not want to drive that car anymore, I always think that the same problem may occur again and it can cause a real accident.
Brakes squealed from the date of delivery in March 2009. Vehicle was taken to vw service department on several occasions to inspect brakes. I was told each time that that's common in the vw Jetta and I had to get used to it. Brakes seemed to fail on several occasions and caused an accident. Vehicle was taken to vw service after accident several times to inspect brakes and each time I was told nothing is wrong until they finally replaced the booster and the sway bar links. After vehicle was delivered back to me, the brake fluid started to leak and the brake warning light keeps illuminating. Vw said that nothing is wrong with the car. The car has delayed braking and sometimes no brakes and is dangerous on the roads, especially the highway.
I have a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta and I have a brake light switch issue (brake light stays on and a dct(p0571) is set) that was described in the recall/replacement, but the VIN group that this applies to is 3vw---9m-ym000089 to 3vw---9m-2m053565, as you can see, mine is just out side the high VIN. The VIN range should be readdressed to include all 2002 model Jettas with cruise control. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Since vehicle was purchased, there has been numerous problems and issues with the vehicle. The most troublesome and expensive is the cooling system. I have had 3 different repair shops look at it and "fix it" only to have the car do the same thing. The temperature gauge does not indicate that the car is overheating, however, it must be. I have been stranded multiple times (almost everyday in my commute to from work and school), after I sit in traffic over 20 minutes, out of nowhere the radiator cap blows off the cooling reservoir spilling the liquid all over the engine and causing the car to smoke. I have even burned had a second degree burn from having to pull over and opening the trunk so I can refill after it cools. Someone has yet to figure out what is wrong with the vehicle. The check engine light has been on for years, again only to have multiple people look at it, and not have the problem solved. I will crank the engine but the car will die out. But if I hit the speed control to set the speed it will stay on. The car will hesitate and I will start off slow then it will go at normal speed. Last but not least I have gotten pulled over 3 times in the last 3 weeks because the brake lights go out. I have replaced these brake lights all recently but they will burn out within days with out me knowing. It is horrible vehicle, I have spent a lot of money trying to get it repaired. Everytime it goes in the shop is for days I have to get a rental car everytime. Enough to say that the car rental people know me by name! my job and school are affected by this each and everytime. I suffer from anxiety every time I get in the car because I don't know what will happen next! it is stressful and ridiculous having to deal with this. Please help!.
The brake light switch began to fail at ~ 60,000 miles. Brake lights would remain on at times without brake being pressed. Brake lights would come on at night randomly and drain battery. Intermittent at first becoming more common. Purchased new brake light switch from dealer. The same switch has been a problem for vw in prior year model cars and resulted in a recall for some models.

Abs unit malfunction causing a stop brake light. This is a known problem that exists in all vw and audis fitted with a bosch abs module. Nothing on my passat has worked right! I have spent about 3000 usd to fix a car so it can function like one, not the deal I was looking for when I went out to buy a car. Now this unit needs about 1400 usd before labor to fix? 5000 usd and some on a 2001 passat? short of getting a horse and carriage, could vw just accept there is a problem with this unit and recall it already. Does someone have to be on fire, running down the free way and get on local news holding a vw or Audi emblem for something to be done? asking mechanics at dealerships if this is a known common occurrence elicits a chuckle one would only get if they were doing stand up. They know it, dealerships know it but will do nothing about it. Everyone is living off everyone's back pocket. . . We call it capitalism! so can this trickle down economics for once get to those who are in no position to see the future and realize the lemon they are buying is such before the fact! guidelines and regulations are set for this not to happen, and when it does, they should be used to correct said issue.

Had to pay to replace rear brake pads and rotors at 21,272, and now less than 10,000 miles after I have to do it again. This is obviously a defect and not normal wear and tear but vw refuses to pay for it and fix it. I have had many cars and never had to replace brake pads, let alone rotors also, before 40,000 miles. My driving style has not changed, if anything I've mellowed with age. There are other issues that bother me besides the very short life span of the rear brakes on my Jetta. The brake wear light that lets you know there's a problem with your brakes only works for the front brakes. Also, I've been told by the service department that although the rotors are not damaged they need to be replaced and cannot be turned on the Jetta because it will cause premature pad wear! so I have defective brakes that wear out prematurely, not way of knowing that they're wearing out until you hear the problem (which is usually too late), and no matter what you also have to replace the rotors everytime you change the pads!.

I purchased the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta in August of 2006. The first set of repairs was on 3/2007 at 64,332 mi check engine light mulitple misfires: p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304 replaced ignition coils cost: $200. 11 second repair took place in April of 2007 took car in for recall - replacement of brake light switch check engline light was back on - replaced temp. Sensor cost: $199. 33 car was jerking into gear, downshifting hard and sluggish. Brought car into dealserhsip in April 2008 worn strut brushings needs rear pads needs rotors check engline light on again needs new coils again spark plugs temp sensor again new t-stat fans not working hoses under intake broken needs new transmission diagnosis cost: $149. 21 estimated cost of repair: $6,500. 00.
I own a 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t. Over the winter my abs system did not function properly at all! sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. Now that it is warmer out it does not work at all! abs light, traction light, and blinking brake light now illuminate my dashboard. I have read that this is a faulty abs control unit which many people have had problems with. I simply don't have 1,500 dollars to fix something like this but it would be nice to be in control of my car on snowy wisconsin roads.
Starting car in the morning or at end of work day and brake warning lights came on. Car cannot be moved - brakes have hissing or whisking sound when pressed. Car cannot be driven, unless turning ignition to first on position putting car in neutral then starting the car. 2. Brakes do not work properly - car is unsafe to drive
3. Dealer claims that there is some sort of brake switch that has a "universal recall" that is causing the problem. I did research before buying my '03 Jetta and found that several complaints about brake failure and brake problems have been on-going. When I questioned the dealer they knew nothing of the sort and said "if there had been problems in the past they have been fixed. " apparently these problems have not - I continue to experience them as have other Jetta owners with whom I have spoken.

: the contact stated the vehicle has a faulty electrical brake light switch causing the vehicle to malfunction and the brake light to illuminate. The dealers determined that the vehicle was not part of a recall although the vehicle experiences similar symptoms. The contact researched online to check on recalls pertaining to the vehicle's symptoms, recall #04v096000 identified similarities. The dealers offered to replace the part for a cost.
On 9/17/2005 I was pulling into my assigned parking spot at my condo. I was approximately traveling about 3 mph and had my brakes applied to maneuver into my parking spot. Upon reaching the curb, I applied pressure to the brakes and expected to come to a complete stop. However, my car lunged forward and ended up in my neighbor's living room. My car only stopped after taking out the brick structure and front window of her condo. Before making impact with the outside structure I attempted to brake twice with no response. The impact was substantial and yet the airbags never deployed. My car was towed to a garage that my insurance approved and not to the dealership who has serviced my car for all the current recalls and various problems. The recalls and problems include the brake light switch, replacement of the coil ignition, armrest break, alarm sounding for no reason, and the window falling into the door frame. This accident caused serious property damage and the police were called to the scene. The police acknowledged my skid marks and my attempt at applying the brakes. The situation was treated/cited as a car accident so that my neighbor and I could go through the proper procedures of her damages being reimbursed. I plan to prove my car is defective and a lemon. I would appreciate any feedback, advice or suggestions regarding my situation.
Check engine light continuously comes on, completed recall for brake switch, epc light continues to come on, car stalls while waiting for a light to change very dangerous. After a night of rain, leak in passenger side floor mold growing car will have a very hard start or no start at all in the morning, replaced battery 3 times. Changed O2 sensor 2x, car burns oil continuously, interior lights go out when they feel like it, brake lights die out fast, changed brake lights and signal lights at least 5x.
I have had trouble with this Jetta from the first day I took ownership of the vehicle. The brake assembly has been replaced. The brake light switch has been replaced. Now I have just received a new transmission in my ten month old car. The car's transmission was reset three times before Volkswagen replaced the valve body. This procedure did not work and in turn endangered my life. I was trying to get on the highway when the car would not shift and was shuddering. I was almost hit by an oncoming 18 wheeled truck. I am scared every time I have to get back in this car. The transmission has been fixed, but not my trust.
Replaced rear brake light 4 times; emergency flasher & turn signals fail to work randomly. Twice had rear brake pads replaced; rotors turned second time -- total cost $550. Repeated sensor failures -- knock sensor, mass air flow sensor, coolant temperature sensor; induction coil failure & vehicle imbolized. Driver mirror repaired twice; passenger p/window stuck down; driver window lock twice; seat belt cracked.
My car is nightmare of failures. Cruise control light (dealer claims the car doesnt have one - but you can see it if you use a flashlight at an oblique angle) failure, abs module switch failure (according to dealer) causing cruise control to unexpectedly disengage. I also learned from other motorists that the same switch controls brake light illumination (all bulbs and other signal lights work). Fuel injection module over injected gas causing excessive pressure. Relief valve failed to open causing turbo overpressure to +120psi. Failure caused hoses to blow sending hose clamps as projectiles. This week, the front passenger side window unexpectedly dropped into the door. Dealer has literally taped the window up until a part arrives. Dealer admits to mfg design defect - no voluntary recall. No dealers will voluntarily replace clips until they fail. Volkswagen position is that they know there is a design flaw, but wont replace known bad clips until there is a failure. Window failure could cause objects (stones kicked up by tires of other cars) to hit passengers. Infant / child safety risk. Window integrity questionable in an accident if it fails when driving 15mph. Help!.
Module controlling abs brakes- switch failed, causing rear brake lights and abs to stop functioning. Normal lights (not brake lights) continued to function. Bulbs (include brake lights) were fine. Brakes worked (no abs) but no one behind me could tell if I was braking. Learned of issue from passing motorist.
I've come to my car several times and have found the brake lights on. After depressing the brake pedal several times, they come off, but managed to come on again after closing the door. More disturbing, however, is the fact that when the vehicle is on, your foot does not have to be applied to the brake pedal to shift out of park; it assumes your foot is on the brake. This is definitely not good; not to mention the drain on the battery. Have there been similar problems reported?.
Vehicle suffered a lost of power when check engine light illuminates. On March 7 2002 university vw discovered a defective airflow meter. The windshield was replaced for a cracked rain drain. The brake servo was changed for a pin hole air leak. Consumer was told that the glow plug harness might be the cause as to why the brake lights come on. The hazard switch switched on and off distressing other drivers behind. Replaced the hazard relay switch (on the dash) by myself. Back brake pad wore down to the rivets. Vehicle overheated on 3 occasions had pressure test and thermostat changed and problem still exist.
Cruise control failure. Linked to abs brake module - switch failure which also caused rear brake lights to stop functioning.
My car has been in the shop nearly every month in the past year (except for 3 months when it was in the shop due to accident), the brake pedal would stick almost every time it was driven would contact dealer and they could not find anything wrong because it was not reporting to a computer. I finally figured out if I put my foot under the brake pedal and pull it back out it would release, it once would not go over 40 mph. I called a tow truck multiple times to have it taken down to dealer still no one could find anything wrong. Then I was sitting in a drive thru and the care made a popping sound and the brake pedal went to the floor and I lost my brakes but I pressed them again and they were fine. I contacted vw and they did not know what it was. Driving home I tapped the brakes to slow down a little and the brake stuck and threw me forward luckily no one was behind me. I called vw immediately and told them that I did not want my car back until it was fixed. The rep drove my car for a week and of course nothing happened til the mechanic drove it. I have had the master cylinder and the brake boosters replaced which has seemed to help the brake from sticking but now my rotars are ruined and vw does not want to replace them becasue they are maintenance parts when it was a warranty part that made them go bad. Recently driving to san diego my cruise control would not keep my car at a set speed, would not pull hills (had a fully loaded semi pass me) would drop to 40 mph on grades, had to keep the car pegged to go posted speed limit on straight stretches. Windows have fallen twice on each side, middle restraint in back seat locks up and has to be replaced, cup holder broke, brake relay went out several times (no brake lights almost rear ended). Is there anything I can do on this will it fall under the lemon laws. I want to replace it due to high cost and time spent going back and forth to the dealer but I more than it is worth. What can be done about this?.
