My daughter has been driving her 2010 Jetta since June 2010 (purchased new). Until the end of 2016 she complained that her car started running unsmooth, jerky, the vsc warning light on/off randomly, unable to go faster than 60 mph on the freeway while the car was shaking violently and the engine revving aggressively. I verified her car driving condition myself. I was traveling above 70 mph on a 65-mph freeway zone. Suddenly the car started to shake violently as if all wheels were severely off-balanced. Ignoring my accelerator pedal, I could barely drive above 45 mph. I felt very unsafe in the middle of the road and prepared to be hit by another car at any moment. To achieve a desired quick brake pedal response on Volkswagen vehicles, the design engineers opted to increase the assembly interference between the brake master cylinder and the booster instead to reduce the brake pedal to the master cylinder piston travel ratio. They reduced the clearances from the master cylinder piston seals to the brake fluid supply/return ports so that the car brakes can be activated with shorter brake pedal stroke. As the results, under assembly dimensional tolerance stack-ups, some cars were built with the brake fluid supply/return ports partially or fully covered by the piston seals at the Volkswagen factories. When the thermally expanded brake fluid cannot flow back to reservoir through the fully covered supply/return ports easily, the fluid will expand brake caliber pistons pushing the brake pads against the rotors resulting brake dragging. When a moving car's engine cannot overcome with the brake dragging frictions, the car driver will lose his/her control to the vehicle speed. The o-ring swell due to aging made the Jetta worse. . The contact owns a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. When the brake pedal was applied, it traveled to the floorboard several times without warning. In addition, there was a strong vibration coming from the braking system when the brake pedal was applied. The vehicle was taken to the dealer more than three times to inspect the brakes, but was unable to replicate and diagnose the failure to provide a solution. The dealer indicated that the brake master cylinder failed. The contact was not aware of NHTSA campaign number: 15v705000 (engine and engine cooling, service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they would respond back to the contact within a specific time frame. The contact was waiting on a response from the manufacturer, but was unable to determine when the vehicle would be diagnosed and repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 7.
I bought a 2014 new Jetta se. But this vehicle sits in vw dealership for entire first month. Last week, I had a fender-bender accident on local highway due to brake problem. Two claims involved in this case: 1. Brake hard like rock when I try to start the vehicle in the morning. I could not start the engine. 2. When I drive on the 50 mile speed limit high way, I could not stop the car due to weak brake system. It took extra long deep stroke to stop the vehicle and took extra long distance to stop. Also I could not do emergency stop if some cuts in front of me. Weak weak weak brake. . . . . I drove for more than 20 years, I have never had such experience. It is an unsafe car! my wife now refuse to drive it. I took this vehicle to vw dealership and they find out problem with car (faulty booster and master cylinder). They changed the components and system twice, and now condition is the same. Vw technical service went to dealership, and they told my dealer that this vehicle is safe. . . . . I am very shock on this conclusion. Please investigate on this vehicle brake system. I don't want other vw Jetta drive have the same problem, rist life for a faulty system, and I must voice it out to warn my fellow Jetta driver: be carefull!.

This is a report of the failure of the booster brake on a 2002 vw tdi Jetta. The symptoms are that while applying the brakes, the pedal will suddenly be sucked to the floor resulting in a sudden stop. The danger created is of being rear-ended and is a potential life threatening issue. The problem is difficult to trouble shoot because it is intermittent. Once the pedal is sucked to the floor it could be days before it happens again. I see that at least eleven other 2002 Jetta owners have reported the sudden braking problem to nhts, I. E. Odi id #10103196, 10129643, 10137579, 10100576, 10058106, 10027194, 8011122, 10139134, 10086927, 8023749, 769651. In each case, where a solution is mentioned, the solution involved the booster brake. In my case the vw dealer, after trying twice, did not find the solution. It was after interacting with the folks at the vw tdi club who experienced the same problem that I learned their solution which was to replace the booster brake. The vw dealer agreed to replace my booster brake only if I agreed to hold no one other than myself responsible should the replacement not solve the problem and if they could replace the master cylinder in addition to the booster brake. The repair made over a year ago on 25 October 2005, solved my sudden braking problem. I see that others on the tdi web site are still having booster brake problems and that they have been unsuccessful in getting volkswagons attention. The help of the nhts is needed to raise the corporate consciousness of the right folks in vw about the booster brake problem. At a minimum vw should alert its service repair folks to the symptoms and the solution. A recall to correct the failed booster brakes is the desired redress. I still have the failed booster brake and master cylinder and will be glad to provide all the parts to the nhts folks.

my name is john b. Myers. I own a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta tdi that I purchased new on 3/10/03 from autohaus of lancaster in lancaster, PA. It now has 56,700 miles on it. (mostly highway) while driving on 6/21/05, I went to apply the brakes and the brakes got mushy and then grabbed and the pedal went to the floor in a sudden stop. As it was stopping you heard a sound like the vehicle now had air brakes. I depressed the pedal again the brakes let up. I was nearly rear ended by a truck the first time it happened. I pulled off the road and called the garage. It turned out to be a brake booster. Prior to this problem, while the vehicle was still under warranty at 48,000 miles, I had the vehicle in for service at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. It was in because several times I applied the brakes in the snow and the tires locked up. This vehicle has anti-lock brakes. At this time the anti-lock brakes ã‚did notã‚쳜 work. This happened several times. The dealership found no problems. They checked it and said all was ok. It happened again about a week after I got it out of the shop. My current mechanic (roberts automotive) who specializes in Volkswagens mentioned that he believes that two problems are very likely the same problem. The mechanic (pat roberts @ roberts automotive) also told me that he called the local dealership (autohaus of lancaster, PA) for the part, and he was told they replaced 8 of these brake boosters in the last two years. I also talked to the service manager at autohaus. Dave told me they have had several brake boosters go bad on the tdi models. The vehicle is now in the hands of autohaus. It sounds to me like there is a problem with quality and workmanship here. This is a definite safety issue. By sheer luck I was not hit by that truck. The booster and master cylinder were defective. When touching the brakes they locked up. . Booster and master cylinder are good, but shaft between the two misaligned and hangs up. Cannot realigned. . . . . Manufacturer insisted that booster and master cylinder were good, but shaft between the two was misaligned, could not realign it. Has to replace it at $640. 00.
My brakes would slow the car down on a stop and go traffic, where I will be driving slowly (without me stepping on the brakes), my car would eventually stop and will require heavy on the gas pedal to allow the car to move. (while the car car is in this stage:on a small slope the car placed on netural would not move) this would bring the rpm to a high rate to go at twenty km per hour (around 3,000 to 4,000 rpm). My rear disc brakes woul have heavy smoke once I have come to a full stop. This has happened a few months after I purchased my car. I thought it was due to the break in of the engine that was the cause. I have changed my rear brake disc pads a couple of times. There is heavy signs of the pads burning(smoking), people with simlar cars have had the same problem and they changed the brake booster and the problem was gone.

While driving on a slight downgrade, during clear wether, on a dry road, my brakes locked up. This was preceeded by a loud decompressing sound, immediately after which the brake petal went to the floor of its on volition. My foot was no where near the break petal. This caused me to skid on the dry pavement and left me extremely close to a ditch. As soon as the car stopped moving the brakes returned to normal. This occured twice more during the mile to my home. It was towed to the dealership. "no fault codes" were in the computers memory. Initial diagnosis - intermittent occurance of an unknown nature. My concern is that if this occured on a busy highway I may have been struck in the rear by another vehicle, injured or died and no-one would have known it was a brake malfunction. My concerns were heeded and a tech was assigned to drive the vehicle home that eve. The brake lock-up occured several times to him while driving slowly. It was once again towed to the dealership. They are replacing the brake booster but are not sure this is the exact cause of this problem. I am concerned to say the least. This is my only vehicle. Is there a recall or investigation? are there deaths attributed to this failure? could there be unreported deaths due to this defect? why was there no fault in the computer? vehicle being repaired @ speedcraft vw, wakefield, ri, (401) 783-3303.
Vehicle had difficulty shifting out of park. Dealership said it had to do with a brake switch recall and that the problem was corrected. When vehicle was driven after repair, brakes felt differently, but worked. A week later while driving on the interstate, the brake pedal stuck and would not accelerate over 50mph. The dealership said the master cylinder was bad and will replace it. Other problems include the arm rest breaking three times, window mechanics needed replaced, door leaks, and cover on plastic interior peeling.
While driving, pressure was applied to the brake pedal and the vehicle did not stop at the desired stopping point. Master cylinder was replaced twice.
While driving in rush hour traffic the master cylinder failed resulting in loss of braking ability. Nlm.
Brake do not engage properly, consumer was informed on the first visit that there was an air pocket in the brake system, new brake fluid was added and the brakes were rebleed, however consumer began experiencing the problem again and the dealer found that the master cylinder was leaking which was replaced, consumer is again experiencing the same problem.
