6 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/16/2007

I received last month a recall notice dated may 2007 from Volkswagen America for the 2001 Jetta v6. It was for a problem with the electronic control module (ecm) software for the catalytic converter monitoring system. I was instructed to go immediately to a Volkswagen dealer for repair. I made an appointment and brought the car yesterday to the local dealer, santa monica Volkswagen. The service team informed me that Volkswagen, had unannounced to owners, closed the recall because it had yet to work out a permanent fix for the problem. Volkswagen America should have sent owners who'd received the original recall notice a letter informing them not to act on the recall, not to bring their cars in. This problem with the ecm software has resulted in the vehicle for years, having the check engine light permanently illuminated. Volkswagen never informed owners of this. As a result, I spent several hundred dollars with my own mechanic, not Volkswagen dealer, trying to solve the problem. Overall, I have been highly dissatisfied with this recall. I continue to drive a car with this defect. Wasted a morning yesterday at the Volkswagen dealer because of an erroneous recall notice sent to me by Volkswagen, and I have already incurred significant expenses trying to solve a problem that Volkswagen has known about, evidently, for many years without acting.

10 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/06/2006

I have had several problems with my mil light since my 5 yr/50,000 mile warranty expired-in fact, I have lost count as to how many times I've had to take my car in (the number of failures listed below is just an estimate). The first time this light came on, the car had 52 or 54 miles on it. It was only a few days old. Apparently something had cracked. In March of this year, three of the cables broke, then not two weeks later the other three broke. The problems just kept adding up. I have tried to be patient with this dealership, but simply cannot understand why on average, I end up back at the dealership, getting my car serviced on average, two weeks after the car's initial appointment. The last time I went in, I spoke with the manager. First, he disparagingly asked me if I was making sure to fill the gas tank with premium gas, as is written on the gas flap. He then proceeded to ask if I was tightening the gas cap. He reassured me that I should not have further problems with this specific part, because all the parts pertaining to this specific light have been replaced. Lo and behold, two days ago, my mil light went on. On average, each time I visit this particular dealership service department, I end up paying $350-600 dollars. Somehow, that does not seem right. I have been following the service department's instructions, and to my dismay, this long-standing, extremely expensive problem has not been resolved.

11 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

Bought a Volkswagen Jetta GLS in 2003. Several things have had to be replaced. For example the glove box cover, wheel bearing. My mechanic told me that on most newer vehicles that wheel bearings do not require maintenance. My car has 74,000 miles. Last week I was driving and my malfunction indicator light started flashing and the car if going over 30 mph cut out. There was a rotten egg smell. It immediately went to the dealership and they said the catalytic converter and 2 coils were faulty. They replaced the catalytic converter and ignition coils for cylinders 1&3 and cleared fault codes. The catalytic converter was replaced under warranty. But said Volkswagen feels the ignition coils are a regular maintenance issue. I have done some research and am finding that Volkswagen has numerous complaints on the coils. In my research I found that vw had a customer satisfaction letter that was sent out to vw owners to bring car into dealership to replace the coils. Vw representative in michigan told me that they stopped doing that in 2005. I believe that I should have not had to pay to replace the ignition coils. Vw knows that they have had numerous problems with this. I love my vw but I have had problems this car that I have never had in any other vehicle. I trade vehicles every 3-4 years but will not purchase another Volkswagen. Not because I have had so many things go wrong because the strange problems I have had with the car and Volkswagen doesn't take care of their drivers.

14 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

82,5310. 00 just replaced the catalytic converter. We have always had some type of an electrical problem from the beginning. Cd player and stereo. Cd lcd panel would say no cd in which you would have a cd in the jacket if you kept pushing the button sometimes it would work. At times you can only read half the call letters for stations. Rolling down back of the windows you would hear a very loud pressure thumping noise. So loud you could not roll down the window in the back. When you would take the car in. Mechanic's always said, it was basically our imagination.

16 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/13/2005

Most recently, the water pump failed. Apparently this is another common failure, which should be covered by a recall. Here is the list of other problems I have had: -both window regulators failed (covered by recall) -tensioner pulley on serpentine belt failed at 40000 miles ($400) -maf sensor at 47000 miles (covered by recall) -catalytic converter failed 50000 miles (covered by emissions recall) -alternator failed at 55000 miles ($450 - using rebuilt alternator) -water pump failed at 60,000 miles ($350 repair bill). The question is. . . What's next? I plan to sell the car within the next few months.

17 Catalytic Convertor problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/03/2005

I just recently had to replace my catalyst system on my 2001 vw Jetta. The car stauled on my way to work, so I had it towed to the nearest vw dealer - cooley Volkswagen, in n. Greenbush NY. They found misfire codes and catalyst system. They also advised me that the coil pack and tune up were needed to correct misfires. My question and concern why did I not receive a warning light on some signal to advise me of any problems that might be occuring. This would have possibly alerted me to get the car into a vw service shop as soon as possible.
