Since I have had my Jetta I have had to keep oil in the trunk because the car burns oil, I was told by the dealer that it is normal for a car to use that much oil, I have had to have the brake switch replaced, the arm rest latch replaced, cd player replaced twice, my passenger rear brake lights burn out regularly (only passenger side), my key in the ignition alarm and lights left on alarm turned and stayed on everytime I drove my car. The dealer's solution to all these problems was to downgrade my car and buy a vw beetle. I purchased a 2002 used beetle - dealer allowed me take car and promised to fix anything on the following Monday. There was a light on the dash that was lit up called epc - I asked the dealer what the light was for and they said that the alignment needed to be adjusted no big deal they would fix it when I returned on Monday. I drove the car off the lot got about 20 miles for the dealership and the car died on the freeway!!!!! while waiting for the tow truck I read in the car manual that epc stood for electric power control - it said if this light goes on do not attempt to drive - tow to dealership immediately - after that I marched right back to the dealer and got my Jetta back - however I still have all of the above problems and few to add to the list defective electric window, noisy brakes when in reverse even after brakes were replaced. I can't wait to turn the piece of @#$%# in to the dealer when my lease is up and walk away - I just feel sorry for the fool they turn around and sell it to!.

The vehicle burns oil excessively. I have to constantly add oil. Everytime I've spoken with the dealer he just gave me the run-around. They conducted 2 oil consumption tests but never did anything to fix the problem. The vehilce was purchased in NJ from douglas motors. At every scheduled service I complained of the same problem but nothing was done to fix it.
Vehicle has excessive oil consumption. Engine check light comes on. Dealer found nothing. Consumer then went to another dealer, who did oil consumption test, and after 6 visits found brake in sealing ring in engine.
Whenever driving engine would burn an excessive amount of oil. Have taken vehicle at least 2 times to dealership, and mechanic indicated that oil burning was perfectly normal for Jetta. No repairs were done to correct problem. There was gel-like buildup on the oil cap and dipstick due to antifreeze or moisture mounting within the engine. The consumer intends to pursue lemon law if defects were not corrected.
Jetta ran out of oil. Continuously burns oil at a rate at or about 1 to 1 and 1/2 quarts per 1000 miles. Dealer says problem is within the engine specs. From Volkswagen. No such specs. Can seem to be produced by either the dealer or the manufacturer. The dealer insists there is no problem and that I should expect to burn and replace 10 quarts of oil in between scheduled oil changes. Car produces black smoke and now has 13,500 miles on it.
I have been having trouble with oil consumption with my Volkswagen, Jetta 2000. I have followed all warranty scheduled checkups, and have taken care of teh car in accordance with the manufacturer specifications. Specifically, at one point, I discovered, between the warrranty checkups, that my car's, oil dip stick was absolutely dry. I reported this event to atamian Volkswagen who told me that "2000 Volkswagen are well known to consume oil". Since then I have undergone oil consumption tests. It has been determined that my car consumes oil at a rate of 1 quart every 1500 miles. Wv says that this complies with their specifications (the oil consumption rate is not stated in the owners manual).
Vehicle was purchased new in 2000. Vehicle ran low on oil at 1500 miles. Filed complaint about excessive oil consumption for a new vehicle. Vehicle now has 66,000 miles and burns one quart of oil every 1000 miles. This has happened from the day of purchase. Mechanic has stated that this is within specs, but may damage pollution control systems. I find numerous complaints on-line regarding this issue.
Excessive engine oil consumption. He car consumed approximately 1 qt of oil per 1500 mi. Taking into consideration this car had 8 miles when I lease it, and I drive under normal driving conditions this engine oil consumption, for me, is totally unreasonable. If I would not refill the engine oil between oil change intervals (5000 mi), the car would consume 74% of its total engine oil, easily burning its engine. At the dealer suggestion I ended up trading this car yet for another Jetta, also consuming oil.
Vehicle which is a 4 cylinder engine burned more oil than expected , a quart every 1000 mile. The oil level was down at 1000-1500 miles after oil change. About this time check the engine light came on . The dealer states that this problem is common with 2. 0l. 4 cylinder engine, when the check engine came on againe, the dealer replaced the oxyen sensor. Since then no light came on.

4 cylinder engine burned 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles, but this vehicle has been burning more oil. Dealer could not determine the cause. Please provide further information.
Oil light came on 2000 miles after oilchange/burning or leaking excessive oil,and oil level low. Passenger's window motor stopped working, resulting in window falling down,. Also, engine revved high/ light switch on interior light fell off/ front right michelin tire blewout, and had to replace battery. Dealer kept repairing problems. Consumer contacted vw CO, and was told they would get back to her, but never did. Consumer felt vehicle was a lemon. Please add additional information.
Vehicle burns oil (doing so for 9 mos now), dealer has been running "test" on car for 4 mos. Said may have to replace engine. Air bag light on first day owning, told to wait 2wks for an appt at which was told car unsafe to drive. Transmission difficult to shift/acceleration (making turns, entering highways, etc. ).
Vehicle experiencing problem with oil burning (one quart) every 750 mile. ; dealer notified on seven occasions. Tests were performed and consumer was informed that nothing could be found, and that it was normal. Seeking NHTSA for information on this matter.
My 2000 Jetta has began burning oil at a rate of 3/4 qt to 1 1/4 qt per 1000 miles. The dealer and Volkswagen state this is normal by their standards and they just continue to do oil consumption tests and tell us to come back. Why has there not been a recall. I have found numerous other similar complaints on the internet and I have never experienced this with any other new care that I have owned.
Car burns oil and needs to be added every 1000 miles. After 5000 miles no oil left. Passanger side glove box rattles.
Engine burns about a quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles. Dealer is waiting on Volkswagen for a fix. After reading other ntsb complaints and talking to other vw owners I find that this is a major problem that vw is hoping will blow away. Adding oil to a new car every 1000 to 1500 miles is not acceptable to me as a consumer. What is vw doing about this?.
Burning oil, changed to using 20w 50 - still burning, have investigated at several dealers, they are all aware of the problem, say it happens in 10% of vehicles, and that Volkswagen is not recalling until they know exactly the cause. My problem was initiated with a loss of a engine casting seal, and has been burning ever since. Most dealers are giving the run around, and vw is claiming that the vehicle is in spec. When talking to independent mechanics and telling them that the vehicle is burning 1 qt of 20w50 every 750-1000 miles, each tells me that the engine is ruined, probably happened when the seal blew. Vw is hiding this from the consumers, apparently is well aware of the problem and is hiding behind a equipment spec. I have been told that it is very possible that there is engine damage to the vehicle and vw is stalling.
Vehicle consuming oil since car was bought. Dealer changed pistons at 15232 miles but car is still consuming oil at 33853 miles. Have returned 13 times to the dealer with this problem since June 2000 but manufacturer insisted consumer keep coming back for oil consumption tests regularly every 1000 miles. Consumer persuing court action at this time. Nlm.
I was told by the manufacturer that 1 quart/1000 miles is normal. I have researched this problem and found that I am not the only person with this problem. This problem needs to be addressed. Burning this much oil is not normal and it is not good for the environment.
I have a 2001 vw Jetta 4 cyl. With 25,000 miles on it that burns 1 qt. Of oil every 1,000 miles. I have brought the car into south shore Volkswagen where the car was purchased for all of its 5,000-mile service appointments including oil changes. Although vw is telling me this is 'normal' for a Jetta I disagree. Per olksvwagen policy I am now doing oil consumption tests which is only confirming that the car does go through 1 qt. Of oil per 1000 miles. There obviously is a problem with the Jetta model that needs to be fixed at vw's expense.
