1 Engine Failure problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/11/2021

Tl the contact's daughter owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the engine failed to turn over after multiple attempts to start the vehicle, without warning. The contact then called eastside Volkswagen (28400 chardon rd, willoughby hills, OH 44092) where he was informed that he had to pay for a diagnostic test to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

2 Engine Failure problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/23/2019

My car is 2 weeks old with 400 miles on the car. Since the odometer had aprox 100 miles on it the car has been having a issue with stalling when coming to a stop. In the past 2 weeks it has stalled aprox 26 times when coming to a stop. I have brought the car back to the dealership for this issue because the car stalled 3 times in a 15 mile drive on the freeway in bumper to bumper traffic. The car is very unpredictable as to when it will decide to stall but becomes a very dangerous situation when commuting on the freeway and it decides to stall. The car is a manual transmission and does not have the auto start stop function but stalls out when coming to a stop. I have informed the dealership that this car is very dangerous to have my family or anyone ride in as you do not know if it will fail and put you at risk of being hit by another vehicle. This is a brand new car and should not have stalling or engine failures at any point let alone having over 20 in a 2 week period. The car is at vw being evaluated but I do not feel comfortable or safe knowing this situation is happening.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

My brand new vehicle has been stalling. Engine struggles to turn on after electrical system is down. Vehicle states that the air temperature control sensor is malfunctioning and vehicle completely stalls w/o power. Engine fails. Electrical fails.

4 Engine Failure problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/06/2016

2011 vw Jetta tdi failed while driving on highway. As car slowed due to traffic, the coil (glow plug?) light came on. When car came to complete stop due to traffic, engine light came on and the car stopped and would not restart. There was no time for me to move to the side of the highway due to traffic congestion so I was stranded in the middle of the freeway. Waiting for CA highway patrol for help, traffic cleared and I was subsequently hit by a car moving at freeway speeds and sustained injuries (ribs, back and neck injuries, and concussion) online, there are numerous reports of other vw cars that experienced the exact same issue (coil/glow plug light, then engine failure). This happened to me on a freeway and the rear-end collision I was subjected to due to car failure could have been fatal. Since this is happening to other vw cars, I believe this needs to be investigated to prevent fatalities. Thank you!.

5 Engine Failure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/08/2015

While driving, glow plug indicator flashed rapidly, indicating engine malfunction. Car experienced a reduction in power. After parking in parking lot, car started up and appeared initially ok, but then experienced total engine failure after driving <300 feet. Car was towed to mechanic. Mechanic indicates that metal fragments/flakes were found distributed throughout fuel system/engine, consistent with failure of high pressure fuel pump. Mechanic stated that this condition was consistent with pictures/description found in technical service bulletin 23 14 03.

6 Engine Failure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

I was driving on the freeway (at speed) on my way to work when my 2010 Jetta tdi suddenly stalled. I was lucky that the engine did not lock up as I would have been rear ended. However, I continued to coast at speed. I was able to coast over to the shoulder. The car would not start. I contacted a tow truck to tow me into the dealership. The dealership informed me that the inter turbo cooler was damaged due to the cold weather. I was also told that due to the cold weather ? they had seen this same occurrence at least 4 times that day alone. Upon further research, it appears that a large number of owners in the us have experienced not being able to start, difficulty starting, and engine failure to due water being drawn into the engine from water condensing in the intercooler. Com/maps/ms?msid=207335707442566723762. 0004b73a15cae256f489f&msa=0&iwloc=a this has caused cars to suddenly die while driving on public roads and highways with the potential of suddenly being hit by fast approaching traffic. It also seems evident that Volkswagen has known about this issue since last winter. There appears to be numerous tech bulletins on the subject.

7 Engine Failure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/11/2013

On Friday Jan. 11, 2013, the vehicle (2010 vw Jetta tdi) in question was traveling on an expressway at a speed of approximately 50 mph when suddenly the glow plug light and check engine warnings turned on the vehicle display and shortly afterwards the engine stalled. The vehicle stalled in the middle of the road but no accident occurred because there was no other traffic at the time of failure. Attempts to start the engine failed. Vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road. Vehicle was towed to service location to be diagnosed and results were indicative that the fuel pump failed catastrophically rendering the vehicle inoperable. Excessive metal shards were evident on the fuel filter. Vehicle has not yet been repaired pending a response from the manufacturer. Same vehicle stalled in traffic after bought new at approximately 8000 miles on the odometer in 2010 but engine was able to be restarted. Volkswagen dealership service department performed diagnostic for the 1st stalling incident and said there was nothing wrong. No service was performed to check fuel system at that time.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/18/2012

2009 Volkswagen Jetta tdi while traveling interstate 81 in NY vehicle just stalled, glow plug and "engine fail workshop" message appeared. Coasted to side of road cycle key off and on, back to normal. Back to 65 mph, same thing. Headed home at 50 mph for approx 50 miles and then occurred again on a hill. Would not restart, coasted back into a driveway, restarted drove at 20 mph coasted into a local restaurant after another stall. Aaa towed to the dealership. After three days they have " no idea" what the prob. Was and returned my car to me. They could not get it to do it again. So I am waiting to be stranded again. . . . . . .

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

We purchased an 03 vw Jetta wagon approx. 2. 5 years ago. We changed the oil at the dealer every 5000 miles. We missed one oil changed and the engine stalled on the road. It was towed to a vw mechanic. We were told it a had total engine failure do to sludge-which they said was lack of maintenance. We paid 16,000 for the car, it had 40,000 miles on it, we put 20,000 miles on it. We contacted a lawyer and we were told there isn't anything we can do-it was sold as is. We contacted vw America and they told us Jettas' don't have the sludge problem, it's the passat with the 1. 8t engine that has the problem. My research shows it's the 1. 8t engine that is the problem regardless of the car it's in. We have no recourse. The car now sits in our drive way with new tires and a broken engine. A new motor plus installation would cost more than the car is worth. Once again the working people get screwed.

12 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/19/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. The cam, rockers, and the duel mass fly wheel in his engine failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and he was advised that he needed to replace various components in the engine at an expense of $6500. 00. The Volkswagen manufacturer was notified, and he was advised that because his warranty expired he was ineligible for a free remedy. The failure mileage was 114,000. The vehicle identification number was unavailable.

13 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2009

2003 Volkswagen Jetta 1. 8 turbo, engine failure due to sludge formation.

14 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

I am complaining about failure of the ignition coils on a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta ( ) with the 1. 8 liter turbo engine. Vw has already recalled a number of Jettas of this vintage and with this engine for replacement of defective ignition coils. However, they have refused to pay for replacement of the coils on this car. One failed causing the engine to run poorly. The dealer recommended replacing all four coils at a cost of $384. 48. The car only had 23,726 miles at the time of the failure. This defect can cause immediate engine failure. Clearly, the vw dealer believed that the coils are subject to unexpected failure at low mileage even though vw of America refuses to recall the particular vehicle.

15 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/30/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly began accelerating on its own. The contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle continued to accelerate. The engine failed, which prevented a crash from occurring. The vehicle is currently being diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 109,000. Updated 11/25/08. When the engine accelerated on its own, the force pushed the driver back into the seat. The speed was so great, that the engine redline and blewout the motor. Updated 11/25/08.

16 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/09/2008

Engine failure on my 2006 Volkswagen diesel Jetta. The electronic control fuel injector over fueled the cylinders and caused the pull rods to bend and damaged the engine, costs are $7,500 to repair the engine. Car is only 2 and half years old with 85,0000 miles.

17 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/22/2007

On April 22, 2007 my son was returning to college in the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 1. 8t when the engine siezed without warning as he accelerated to enter a busy interstat 80. Fortunately, he was able to coast off to the side of the road. Interstate 80was heavily used by trucks, and had my son not been in a position to get off to the side the engine failure could have caused a very serious safety hazard not only to my son but to many other vehicles using this highway. I understand that this is not an isolated instance of failure of the vw 1. 8 t engine. From what I have seen on the internet it appears that is fairly common for these engines to fail and vw tends to blame the owners for improper maintenance. My Jetta was purchased in April 2006 with 31,000 miles, in the year that we had the car we put approx. 10,000 miles on it and we had the oil changed at least two times. We purchased this car based on vw advertising about the quality and safety of these cars and I feel that vw should take responsibility for their poorly engineered engine and issue a recall to correct deficiencies with this engine. I order for me to correct this problem I have to replace the engine, I also have just been informed that when the engine suddenly froze the transmission was also damaged. The cost of to make this car usable again will be in excess of $7,000. While I don't feel that it is right that I am stuck with the cost of repairs that are the result of a serious design problem with this engine, I am much more concerned with putting lives in jeopardy when an engine stops without warning at high way speeds.

18 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/22/2006

Oil pan was cracked do to contact with speed bump. Engine light did not come on until engine failed due to lack of lubrication. When obtaining a replacement oil pan from manufacturer a redesigned oil pan was used as a replacement. Instead of cast aluminum it was steel. If this pan was used as the original pan the incident would have never occurred. After investigating found out that steel pan is used in german built Jetta's but us made use cast product. Vw refused to warranty engine with only 21,000 miles.

19 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/04/2003

Consumer stated while driving at any speed and without warning the engine failed and lost power and it was difficult to control the vehicle.

20 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

Engine failure, radio failure, window wouldn't roll back up, vibrating speakers. W service shop failed to correct conditions on several occasions.

21 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/26/2002

Engine failure due to complete failure of 2 ignition coils. Car does not get power, operates at dangerously low speeds, especially when you're on the highway. Acknowledged by dealer as a major problem with 2002 1. 8turbo vw/Audi engines. Manufacturer defect but will only permit replacement of coils that are "bad" even though they know the others may go too.

22 Engine Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/03/2002

Coilpack failure on the engine. The partial engine failure caused the car to shake violently while driving. It was difficult to bring the car over 25 miles per hour, even on the highway. After a few minutes, the car was smoking and smelled bad. The Volkswagen dealer told us that lots of cars, particularly the ones with 1. 8t engines, are having this failure. He said that Volkswagen is aware of the problem but that the part is on a national backorder. Our car was in the shop for almost three weeks.

24 Engine Failure problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/03/1999

While driving at 70 mph and without prior warnng, engine failed, and consumer lost power. Consumer was in the third lane, and the vehicle shut down . Also, engine valves dropped straight through the engine on the other side while in motion, and vehicle vibrated.

25 Engine Failure problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/01/1998

Both right side window assemblies failed. Manufacture refused to do anything about these failures. Only question asked by manufactures representative was how much money had I spent on previous dealer maintenance. When informed that I had not had them perform the 30,000 mile checkup he told me since I had not spent money with his dealerships he wouldn't even conside spending any money on me. I had not had the dealer perform the 30,000 mile check because I had the engine set to specifications both prior to and after the 30,000 mile mark because the engine failure light had made it necessary to have emergency maintenance performed at those times. I could see no reason to have the 30,000 mile check done additionally. I had checked the vehicle visually for the balance of the 30,000 mile items myself. And yes I am qualifed to check the other items with the exception of the engine.
