The interior heater does not work correctly. We took the vehicle to a vw mechanic oasis auto center in redding, CA. He said he cleared the coil but that a valve may also be part of the problem. This occurred in November 2011. Since we live in n. California it has not been a big issue since it is warm most of the year. I did however see this is a recall item. Please advise me if we can still get this repaired under the recall.

01 vw Passat heater core. It doesn't put out enough heat to clear the windshield from fogging up or defrosting it either. This is an on going problem in the colder months. It's very difficult to see where I'm driving at times. There has been occasion where I've driven off the edge of the road because I could not see clearly. I had the heater core cleaned thoroughly and back flushed. Still the problem persists.

My a/c blower motor works when it wants to and most of the time when it's hot it does not blow. The blower motor will start on it's own sometimes driving down the road. Or if I go through a car wash (drying cycle with the blower) it will start up. I had it at 2 vw shops and they could not find the problem.

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while attempting to start his vehicle on a cold morning, the defrost feature failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they diagnosed the failure as the heater core. The dealer replaced the heater core. The current mileage was 65,700 and failure mileage was 65,600.
The contact states that the vehicle is a 2001. 5 Volkswagen Passat. There is a problem with the windows fogging. This occurs when the temperature is around 50 degrees or less. The fog will appear on the window after the vehicle is started. Sometimes the fog will appear after the contact was driving. It will occur wither or not the heater or fan turned on. The problem seems to be less severe once the vehicle was heated . The only way the fog will go away is if the air conditioner is turned on high. She has already taken it to the dealership twice, each time they did a pressure check to the heater core , but no repairs were made. She is taking it back again to the dealer. There was a previous problem with the radiator leaking. The radiator was replaced on October 4, 2005. The fog problem appears to have gotten worse since the radiator was replaced.
Consumer stated when defrosting front windshield, the defroster was blowing air from outside of the vehicle.

Both power windows fail and window defogger doesn't work. So when this occurs I don't even have the option of rolling down my windows to clear the car so that I can operate the vehicle. Very dangerous and has led to near accidents on 4 occasions. Driver's window completely failed. Must try to open door while driving to clear air. Must try and open door if stopped by policeman opening your door is not acceptable by policeman. As with other Volkswagen models, this model has major power window failure which posses a safety threat because of inability to operate both front windows. Dt.
Gauge cluster and hvac control unit both failed at startup. Dealer was unable to diagnose cause of failures.

The a/c ventilation system is defectively designed such that it promotes the growth of bacteria which causes an awful odor when turned on. I would guess that it aerosolizes the bacteri and or fungi and sprays them at high speed through the ventilating system outlets. I do not know but wonder what potential health risk this poses to children, pregnant women and immunosuppressed people or others with chronic respiratory illness such as asthma and copd. Finally, I wonder if there is a theoretical or real risk of legionnaire's disease since the same risk factors found in airconditioners at hotels and building may be replicated in this automotive format. I would like your feedback and assessment of risk.

Since I purchase this car there has been a bad odor when the heat has been turned on, the dealer has twice tried to fix by "cleaning" the system. Cannot use heater because of this problem.
