4 Sun Roof problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

Sunroof exploded while driving down freeway at night. No cars in front of me to kick up a rock, no overpasses for something to be thrown from. Completely random explosion. I heard a loud gunshot sound, then small glass pieces rained down on my head and face and all over my three children in the back seat. Looked up and heard the sound of wind and saw the hole in my sunroof. So far the dealership has said they won't replace it under warranty and I have reached out to vw directly and they are denying the claim as well. This is absolutely a manufacturing defect and they are not standing by their product. They are lucky nobody was injured or killed in an accident. Hopefully that doesn't have to happen for them to take responsibility.

5 Sun Roof problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

While driving 65 mph and without warning the sunroof of my 2013 Volkswagen Passat exploded outwards, creating an approximately 18" hole. Some glass fell inside but the majority of the glass exited the car. The outside temperature was ~65 degrees, no other windows were open and the sunroof was fully closed; the interior cover of the sunroof was open. Neither the heat or air condition were on. I was not on my cell phone and the music volume was on low. I am the first owner of this car, having taken possession 87 days ago. The dealership will not accept culpability and has stated I would have to prove a factory defect led to the explosion of the sunroof. An internet search indicates the exploding sunroof is not an unheard of problem. We continue to address this issue with the dealer but as of this moment, indications are they will expect our insurance to cover the costs of repair.

The drain coming down from the sunroof apparently became clogged causing this vehicle to short out. . . Horn blowing, alarm system going off, etc. The waterproof black box, which is underneath the drivers seat, was full of water and the comfort control box was all burned. The drivers side floor is soaking wet and we have been trying to dry it out for 6 days now. We are very concerned that this could have caused a fire while our daughter was driving her car. Please advise. . . . .

Water leakage from sunroof to floor boards. The sunroof has drainage tubes, that can and will become clogged. Water on floorboard can lead to transmission problems. Tubes had to be unclogged, located on front door frames.

12 Sun Roof problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/28/2007

Sunroof spontaneously opens and closes without warning. When it opens, it is impossible to get it closed with the switch as it never returns to a predictable position based on the markings on the switch. Once open, it may close itself at randomly and unpredictably. When it is open, I'm afraid to get my hand near it for fear it will close and pinch me. It has also spontaneously opened during rainstorms which causes me to divert my attention to the road attempting to close it. The rain entering my car while it happens is also a major distraction. This problem is not unique to just my car. Nearly everyone I know with a 98 or 99 Passat has this problem.

The consumer approved the repairs, however as he was pulling out of the dealers lot, the same problem happened. 16 Sun Roof problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/14/2006

2004 vw Passat. I was driving at night on the freeway at 75 mph when I heard a sudden loud crash and breaking glass, some of which fell into the car. I immediately pulled over and identified that the sunroof had just shattered. Glass from the middle of the sunroof was in little pieces on top of the headliner. The remaining rim of glass is present, bowed slightly upward but also full of little cracks. Was in a remote area of highway, no homes, businesses, overpasses present. No truck traffic although there was one car 300 feet in front of me. I saw nothing in the roadway or in the air. When I got home I carefully examined the roof (fine layer of dust) and there were absolutely no marks. The plastic surface of the top of the headliner panel also has absolutely no marks on it. This appears to have spontaneously shattered and does pose a potential safety hazard as glass fragments fell into the car even with the headliner closed. The deal has advised I will need to bring the car back on Monday for the manager to examine along with possibly a representative. I'm concerned about this happening again. In busier traffic or if headliner had been open this could result in an accident or passenger injury due to flying glass.

After heavy rains this past week, my 99 Volkswagen Passat has flooded twice on the passenger side, front and back. After researching, I found that the problem came from clogged sun roof drains. I wet vacuumed out 3 gallons of water from the car. This problem is also caused by clogged pollen filters. There is no mention of either of the problems in the manual. Vw should be held accountable for this problem/defect in their cars. I have found hundreds of complaints from consumers on the same issue (www. . Read more...

23 Sun Roof problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

: the contact stated rain water pools into the rear of the vehicle when it rains steadily through the sunroof while it is closed. The floor of the vehicle underneath the driver seat becomes wet and there is a possibility of shock from wiring under the seat. Vehicle was taken to dealership for diagnosis and repairs on 10/21. Vehicle was diagnosed with defective sunroof frame as source of leak causing damage to "transmission computer and airbag module. " manufacturer and dealership do not want to assume any responsibility for defect and I am concerned that they are avoiding and or concealing information about more than just monetary damages and vehicle's defect. Of particular concern is airbag module damage and any other components of this system that could be damaged or defective also. Please advise.

I had the sunroof of my 1998 Passat spontaneously shatter. I was driving 60-65 mph when this happen. The weather was overcast with light rain. The temperature was 37 f. The glass appears to be blown outward. Luckily I had the sunroof shade closed which prevented me from being showered with glass.

28 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/30/2005

The motorized sunroof on my 2005 vw Passat pulls the interior sunshade open with it when it is opened electrically. While the sunroof itself has an anti pinch feature, the sunshade handles/vents represent a pinch point as the sunroof opens. The handles/vents are hard edged plastic that have the potential to mangle a fingertip. I do not know whether the anti pinch system operates in the "open" direction of motion, but seems not to be active (based on my bruised finger).

The unit sits beneath the passenger seat of the vehicle and was completely submerged in water due to the failure of the sunroof drains which caused rain water to collect and pool inside of the vehicle.

31 Sun Roof problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/14/2004

I was traveling at freeway speed outside of pendelton oregon when the wind blew my sun roof off of my car. The sun roof was closed, and the car just erupted and the roof was literally peeled off the top of my car. I have taken photos of the problem, and it seems Volkswagen is using a plastic caliper system to connect the sunroof glass assembly to the drive mechanics on the motor driven carraige. The plastic fatigued because of use and Volkswagen could care less. The new assemblage is $2200 and there is no second choice, purchase the entire assembly or go without a sunroof. . . . . After calling Volkswagen and getting nowhere I am proceeding to small claims court in oregon for pursiut of my money back.
