1 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

On raising the window, the glass falls into the door without warning. This happens with both front and rear doors, driver and passenger sides. Each time, the diagnosis is the same: the "regulator" failed. Repairs cost approximately $400 per window. My wife and I own identical cars and of the eight windows, four have failed. After roughly $1600 for the four windows, I'm losing patience. A coworker owns a similar car and has had the same problem.

3 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/04/2006

My side window blew out while driving 65 mph on mostly rural stretch of highway 94, driving eastbound near waukesha, WI. I was in the leftmost lane with no vehicles within 50 yards to the front or back of my car. I don't believe anything struck the window and I didn't see any cracks in the glass before I got on the highway. It was about 30 degrees outside and we had our heater on for about 30 minutes inside the car. I drive a 2003 vw Passat. No accident or injuries to myself or my passenger resulted from the window explosion. I didn't report anything to the police or sheriff because I have no reason to believe the window was deliberately smashed by a person with a weapon or thrown object. The window was replaced at my own expense. I have two photos of the wndow taken before the remaining shattered glass was removed. How common is this for side windows? could it be a defect in the glass? a spontaneous failure of the glass? could a projectile that I didn't see or hear strike the side glass with enough force to shatter the window?.

4 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

The rear window glass fell inside the door while traveling at 80 mph, causing my family to get extremely alarmed. I tried to put it back up via the power window switch on the door but it was incorporative. When I took it to Volkswagen, they said a pin holding the window up broke. This is unacceptable as I had an infant next to the window at the time of the incident. Because of the infant's location, my wife's purse strap hit him in the face causing mirror injury.

5 Side/rear Glass problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Driver's power window regulator mechanism has repeated failures despite replacement/repair on six occasions. This is a serious safety hazard, since the window must be closed by grasping the glass and manipulating it which can result in fingers being trapped and broken. Also, once this failure has happened, the window may drop down into the door unexpectedly at high speed causing driver distraction, or fail to open in an emergency precluding an escape path. This is compounded by faulty door latch mechanism actuators which preclude door opening from outside by rescue personnel. The failure is caused by a faulty roll pin slipping out of the door latch trigger mechanism causing failure of and binding of the linkage which causes the door lock actuating mechanism to fail, trapping passengers inside the vehicle. Please note that per the ge information services, japan issued a recall for this problem.

6 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/11/2004

For the third time in 6. 5 months, the rear passenger window on my 2001 Volkswagen Passat wagon has shattered. The previous two occurrences were reported earlier. This time the car was parked in the parking lot at work and the window was open a few inches. Upon returning to my car after work around noon, I found the window shattered again and shards of glass all over the inside of the car. After the previous incident, the Volkswagen representative indicated that there was not a defect in the car. He felt that outside influences caused the problem. That is difficult to believe after the third occurrence.

13 Side/rear Glass problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/12/1998

The right front seats would rock whenever vehicle is turning corners or curbs. This also happens when coming to or leaving a stop sign or light. Contacted manufacturer & nothing could be or would be done. Sun roof would open & close on its own. Would have no warning. The rear window looked like it had acid rain on it when bought. Been to dealer & mechanic removed seat & replaced it. No problem found. Checking on other problems.
