36 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 09/24/2016

While driving my car from wv to NY, I broke down down in PA. My car was making an odd noise and rumbling feeling while I was driving on the freeway at 70 mph and would worsen during acceleration. I was very concerned, so I pulled off to a gas station. At this point no check check engine lights were on. After I filled up on gas, the car would not start. It was towed to vw dealership in northern PA, where I was told an air hose was broken. 10 days later, my car began making the same noise and driving poorly again while I was driving on the express in long island, and was exacerbated by accelerating. My car could not accelerate above 30 mph, so I promptly took my car to the mechanics, where I was told the timing chain tensioner and guide, exhaust valves, gasket heads and spark plugs needed to be replaced. Additionally in 1400 miles, my car had consumed all of the its oil and was on running on fumes. Apparently my car consumes oil at an absurd and unacceptable rate. The timing chain tensioner failing has been a common problem amongst vw 2. 0tsi engines and currently there are multiple lawsuits filed against this type of engine, as is the consumption of oil. My car was not involved in an accident due to these failures, but that is only because I pulled over to a safe location as soon as I felt something was wrong. Again a check engine light never came prior to both mechanic visits. However this could have caused an accident and may continue to cause one in other vehicles.

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan. While driving 75 mph, the vehicle stalled and the oil pressure indicator illuminated approximately 30 seconds before the engine stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain tensioner failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,000.

38 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 09/11/2016

Check engine light appeared 09/11/16. Vehicle was stationary at the time the light engaged. Dropped off at dealer who informed me that the tensioner had failed and the following had to be replaced: tensioner, timing case, sealent, gasket, bracket, valve, and rail needed to be replaced. He stated that the problem was caught early enough that upon inspection of the engine they found no damage to the engine. There is no maintenance schedule in the manual for the tensioner. He also stated that due to the tensioner failing, the timing chain was skipping links which would have lead to engine failure. There were no dash board messages indicating why the check engine light was triggered. Please see enclosed invoice as attached.

39 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 09/05/2016

Mileage: 38,000 miles. Date: 9/5/2016. Upon engine startup first thing in the morning I noticed a momentary rattling noise which I recognized as timing chain noise. (I'm a certified auto mechanic. ) the noise went away in about one second which is typical for a hydraulic timing chain tensioner. I researched the net and found quite a bit of information on failing hydraulic timing chain tensioners on vw tsi engines. The timing chain noise occurred a second time on 9/23/2016, also first thing in the morning substantiating a failing timing chain tensioner leaking down over night. On 10/2/2016 I spent $256. 63 to buy the parts for replacing the timing chain tensioner myself.

40 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 07/03/2016

My Tiguan only running 50k miles broke down in the middle of the highway. The engine light went on and the car stopped accelerating. When I towed it to the mechanic, I was told the timing chain tensioner and crankshaft sensor were bad. The timing chain tensioner defect caused complete engine failure. I now do not have an engine. After looking into this issue and talking to some lawyers all over the us, it seems like many people with vw Tiguans (2. 0l engines) have this issue and there are a few class action law suits in the us regarding this matter. I spoke to vw of America and they said there was no recall issued, although they are aware of this defect. Vw dealership now tells me the estimated cost to repair the engine and timing chain tensioner is around $10,000. If the timing chain tensioner was not defective, my engine would have never failed. I showed them proof of oil changes over the last 3 years in which were all done in a timely manner. I am now fighting with vw of America about this issue. There should be a recall on these vehicles. My car immediately broke down on the highway and I was very lucky that no one crashed into me. This is a very dangerous problem.

41 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan. While driving various speeds, the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. Shortly after, the vehicle failed to accelerate any further. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft sensor and timing chain tensioner failed and needed to be replaced. While the vehicle was at the dealer, the technician had the vehicle running with the timing chain tensioner failure, which caused the engine to fail. The engine would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

42 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle shook and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine failed due to the timing change tensioner and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,000.

43 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

One night I parked my Tiguan everything was ok, in the middle of the night my wife was getting ready to go to work couldn't get the car started. Next morning I rented an obd2 scaner and read the codes. Had the car towed to the dealer ship. Next day they called me and told be because of the timing chain tensioner failing my motor basically grenaded and they needed $7216 to repair. The car had 62k miles and it was 6 months passed warranty. I contacted customer care and they only agreed to cover 50% which leaves me with 3k bill that I couldn't have avoided. I never knew the Tiguan had a 10k mile oil change service so I always changed at 3k. How could have I avoided this failure.

44 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 05/23/2016

The car had an extreme misfire at idle and very rough running. I took the car for an inspection at the vw dealership. They told me the problem was that the chain had stretch because they were unable get an stable timing. After dissembling the opening up the house covering the timing chain they informed me that the cam screen had come loose and liking caused the chain to stretch. Vw told me it would be wise to have the cam replaced in case the screen caused any damage it to it as well. After the repair was completed I asked them directly if the tensioner had failed and they then admitted that the engine failure was the result of bad tensioner not a stretched chain. The vw manager told me he was aware of the tbs on the tensioner failures. The manager choose to make up an unbelievable story to cover the true problem. The chain was not stretched and there was no damage to the cam shaft. I directly complain to vw and they told me in a letter the "tsbs don't indicate trends among our vehicles, as they are issued to out dealerships for instructional purposes only. " this is a carefully constructed statement to obfuscate the truth. Initial failure occurred on the highway at 65 mph. The mileage was 77300. The failure on this engine appears to have spared damage to the valve but a more serious failure could have shut down the car in the middle of a 4 lane highway.

Common failed timing chain tensioner on many vw's tsi engines , caused complete engine damage and costly repair, luckly no injuries happened vw refused to repair even though car was still under warranty when damage occurred .

48 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 01/31/2016

The contact owns a 2010 volkswagon Tiguan. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle became unresponsive and the engine would not operate as normal. The check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain tensioner belt failed and the engine would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 83,000.

49 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 10/31/2015

While driving 25-30 mph on a city street, vehicle stopped accelerating (much like running out of gas. . . ) dealer states timing chain tensioner failed destroying engine-I understand vw has a TSB out on this for years and though I serviced my vehicle at dealer, never knew of this potential problem.

50 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 10/24/2015

On oct. 24, 2015 when I tried to start my car, it shook, idled roughly and stalled. I tried again and it wouldn't start. I had the car towed to my Volkswagen dealer. They checked it and told me the timing chair had broken causing catastrophic damage to the engine. The estimate for repairs was $4952. 29. And if the engine had to be replaced, it would be $6500. Volkswagen of America group would pay nothing toward the repair claiming it was out of warranty. (the power train warranty was 5 years/60,000 miles. ) the car had 49,000 miles, but was over the 5 year time period. But a timing chain should be good for the life of the car; unless there is a defective part. You have a TSB (tb-15-12-01 -NHTSA id number: 10045560) on the "tensioner" which causes the chain to become loose, skip and break. Moreover, there are numerous complaints on your site about this exact issue. Volkswagen failed to notify customers of this defect and there was no recall. This is a ticking time bomb that can result in a serious accident. The day before this happened, I was travelling on the florida turnpike for 8 hours at the posted speed of 70 mph. If the chain had broken during that time, it could have resulted in a fatal accident involving me and/or others. Why hasn't there been a recall? why should Volkswagen be allowed to put my life and the lives of others at risk? why should I have to pay for Volkswagen's negligence when they were aware of this issue for almost 3 years? this defect has the potential to kill. Does someone have to die before you will take action to require Volkswagen to fix this problem?.

51 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 09/21/2015

On a cross country road trip, my 2009 vw Tiguan was running perfectly. Stopped at a rest stop, and when tried to restart car, it rattled severely and the engine light went on. Vehicle was towed to vw service, and I was told I needed an engine replacement, due to a failed timing chain tensioner. It cost me $5800, along with 5 days of lodging while waiting for repair. The vw dealer supported the fact that I should get reimbursed by vw. My vehicle had a perfect maintenance record. There is nothing in the manual pertaining to maintenance requirement for timing chain/tensioner. All it takes is a quick search on the internet to see the unbelievable amount of cases and complaints, even to vehicles with as low as 10,000 miles. There is apparently a new tensioner service kit available to avoid the catastrophic damage, but vw has not notified customers. This is absolutely a safety issue. My wife or I could have been traveling in a remote area with no cell reception, which is often the case. It is also unacceptable to put the financial burden on customers when it could be avoided. This needs to be a recall. This is a canadian vehicle, but the breakdown occurred in NY state. This should be a north american recall.

52 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

Timing chain tensioner failure: my Tiguan had been running perfectly and was a great car since purchasing it 7 months prior to this incident. I drove it 250 miles and at the end of the trip as I was pulling into my destination, I noticed back-and-forth rocking and the engine sounding a bit clunky. I planned to take it back to the dealer I purchased it from to get checked out and wasn't going to drive it if I noticed the back-and-forth rocking again, but I didn't. Approximately 100 miles before making it back home, I pulled into a gas station for a rest stop. I came back out to my car turned the key, and nothing happened. The battery was at full charge, but the engine had the starter wanted to fire up the engine, but there was nothing. I had the car towed to my local vw dealer and was extremely surprised upon receiving news that my engine and turbo were blown and both needed to be replaced. After notifying the used car lot I purchased the car from, I was made aware of my vehicle being one month beyond the 6-month warranty. I called vw who said they couldn't do anything to help since my vehicle was well over the warranty mileage. I have since persuaded the dealership I purchased from to cover the installation of a replacement engine, but purchasing the new engine and turbo(upwards of $9k for oem) has fallen on me.

53 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

Driving on freeway at 70 mph and experienced failure of timing chain tensioner. Cam skipped chain and caused pistons to impact valves. Total and complete engine failure that was sudden and unexpected at highway speed. My research finds that vw is aware of this problem but will not issue a recall.

54 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 10/21/2014

I brought my Tiguan in due to an engine leak and to have an engine diagnostic. They indicated the main rear main seal was leaking. 700 plus dollars. Repaired the seal the leak stopped but the low engine pressure light would not go off. The then indicated that the tensioner arm was bad and that needed to be replaced. I received a call the next day that the tensioner was bad but the tensioner chain had walked off the rocker arm and that the engine needs to be replaced. I called multiple times to volkswagon customer care multiple times and they responded that they cant help with anything. I have researched the tensioner arm through google and found pages and pages of blogs with people that have experienced the same issue with the tensioner arm failing resulting in engine failure.

55 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 07/20/2014

Timing chain tensioner failed causing the timing to jump destroying the engine.

56 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

The cam timing tensioner failed when tried to start the engine. Check the problem online and find out a couple of same issue in Volkswagen vehicles. The car is over 5-year warranty but still in 60k miles warranty. Volkswagen of the united states doesn't want to give any financial assistance. Just after 5 years of new car warranty the car got this critical issue in engine, I think this would be an essential design defect from vw.

57 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

Tried to start the vehicle and it turned over but would not run. Cranked enough to get a sound like a bicycle wheel with baseball cards in the spokes along with a flashing check engine light. Has been diagnosed as a failed timing chain tensioner and slipped timing chain due to faulty sprocket where teeth were rounded off, requiring a complete engine rebuild or replacement in spite of recommended oil changes having taken place.

58 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 04/05/2014

For a week, there was a rattling sound when I started my car that usually stopped after a few seconds of running. On 04/05/14, I heard the rattling sound the entire time when driving. When I stopped, my vehicle cutoff and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to repair shop where the mechanic told me there was no compression in the engine. He later explained the timing chain tensioner broke which caused valves in the engine to bend. Researching the internet, I noticed the same exact diagnosis was given to several other consumers of the same year, make and model. Some of whom had the misfortune of having their vehicles cutoff on the highway.

59 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

At slower speeds, idle, coming to a stop and accelerating the engine sputters causing a hazardous situation. This is a result of the failure of the timing chain tensioner. Vw has created improved replacement parts but has not informed any customers. Also the vw Tiguan owners manual claims that the tensioner is lifetime and need no maintenance. Eventually the sprocket wheels become so worn that the chain jumps and destroys the pistons/header/engine. Failure usually happens above the 60,000 mile powertrain limited warranty. Vw America is aware of the issue but claims "like any component on any vehicle, it's still possible for it to fail". They know this is a serious hazard, they have a fix and they do not inform customers.
