1 Ignition Switch problem of the 1997 Acura TL

Failure Date: 07/14/2018

Although my car is about 20 years old now, I've done a lot of research about the problems I've experienced and it appears cars made from 1997 experienced malfunctioning ignition switches. My key will not start my engine and has gotten stuck inside the cylinder many times. I just replaced the battery as well due to my vehicle stalling when I turn it on. There should be no reason other than the faulty machinery that's giving me all this trouble. Many of the people who have this make, model, and year have expirenced these exact issues. I believe you guys have issued a recall which is why I'm informing the company. Hopefully you can help. Thank you .

2 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 09/02/2016

Interlock operation of ignition switch does not function properly allowing ignition key to be turned off and the key removed without shifting the transmission to "park. " this is the same defect described in NHTSA campaign no. 05v025000, although that campaign was for Acura Tl model years 1999-2000, and did not include model year 2003. I have recently experienced this problem where the car rolled back after I exited the vehicle requiring that I open the driver's door, jump into the car while in motion and depress the brake. I understand that there have been similar defects that have caused serious injuries and deaths. I reported this to Acura today (case no. 05011338) but was told that my car was not included in the prior recall and no repairs would be covered by Acura.

5 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/15/2014

On 3/15/14 my 1999 Acura Tl stalled/engine shut of completely without any warning while driving on the highway at 65 mph. 2nd time it happened, I was driving 40 mph on 3/22/14 & 3rd time it happened I was driving 10 mph on 3/27/14. Each time it happened the engine shut off completely but, the radio and warning light in the dash flashed on and off. I was able to coast to a stop without power steering. After 3-4 attemps to restart the car, I was able to drive off without incident. It happens so random and without warning that I am terrified to drive this car. The car has had a recall of the ignition switch performed in 2003 by the Acura dealer. On 3/24/14 I took the car to the dealer and they have trouble diagnosing the problem. They kept the car for 4 days. They replaced the main fuel relay, performed an engine diagnostic check, performed a recall on the ignition interlock and road tested the car. I picked up the car on 3/27/14 and it stalled later that day as I was driving away from my home. I took the car back to the dealer on 3/28/14 and they still have the car. I want the ntsa to investigate this engine stall issue with the 1999 Acura Tl. I called Acura client relations to report the problem on 3/26/14. I asked them to seriously look into this complaint. I believe ntsa should get involved to get Acura to check/rebuild the faulty ignition switch and conduct a fresh recall. This is a dangerous & serious problem that is similar to the recent gm ignition switch recall. Any vehicle that suddenly and silently shut down while driving instantly and without warning needs ntsa's immediate attention before injurys and deaths occur. I have lost all faith in Acura to successfully repair this ignition switch/stalling issue and call upon ntsa to get involved to investigate this complaint to do what it is supposed to do. . Save lives and prevent injuty.

A routine service diagnostic showed high resistance points in the ignition switch due to the condition of the solder joints in the switch. The higher current draw is a potential fire hazard. 14 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 12/28/2010

On December 28, 2010, my 1999 Acura 3. 2tl engine shut off while I was driving without any dashboard warning lights. I pulled over to the side and tried turning the engine back on. It turned on and drove for about 2 minutes but shut off again. This repeated 6 ~7 times until I barely reached home. I checked my recall notices and have a record of changing my ignition switch under recall back in February 21, 2003. I searched online and many people were having the same problem of replacing the ignition switch more than once. I purchased the part and replaced it myself in my garage. Afterwards, the problem was gone and my engine never shut off since than. I called Acura and informed them of my incident and sincerely asked them to seriously look into this matter. I had told them if the part failed again, they need to check/rebuild the part and conduct a fresh recall. This is a dangerous & serious problem. A vehicle suddenly & silently shuts down and loses power instantly without any warning.

15 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 07/19/2010

99 Acura Tl, single owner, routine maintenance followed by the book. Had ignition switch replaced after recall in 2002. 3 months ago at about 165,000 engine started cutting off while driving. Had it check by two places but neither had a solution. Started using gas treatments and did not have any further problems until yesterday. Driving on the highway middle lane, the car cut off (9:00pm) had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the emergency lane while coasting - very scary dodging 18wheelers. Made it to the side tried to start, would not start. Waited 5 minutes, started again and moved about 100 feet towards an exit before it cut off again. Repeated process this time made it to the exit and waited for spouse. My spouse drove the car home no problem. Next morning trying to go to work car shut down on the highway again after traveling about 5 miles from my house. Tried to get it back home to a goodyear by the house. It cut off 8 times during that time. Goodyear analyzed it and said it looked like the ignition switch. Called Acura and was told if I already had the repair another repair would not be covered and Acura was the only one that could determine that the ignition switch was indeed the problem. I cannot risk driving 45 miles to the nearest dealership just for them to tell me that the ignition switch is not the problem.

16 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/07/2010

I was driving my 1999 Acura Tl on the freeway at a speed of 65 mph when the ignition shut off and the car quickly lost speed in heavy traffic. I was in the right lane and I managed to coast off the freeway but I had no power steering and I hit a concrete barrier before coming to a stop. After repeatedly attempting to restart the car over a period of five minutes the ignition turned on again and I was able to drive the car home. A quick investigation of product recalls for this particular make and model revealed that there was an official notice of recall for the electronic ignition switch issued by Honda of America for this car but I was never informed of it and inquiries to an Acura dealer in santa monica, CA only resulted in denials that my car had this problem.

Hello mr. Or mrs. , I brought 1999 Acura 3. 2 Tl in 2005 (about 38,000 miles) from 78 years old man. He take very good care of it so do I. My car now it had about 65,350 miles on it. The problems is that early this month (August) I took my car for a ride then suddenly the "engine stop" on busy street Ford road, canton, mi 48187 after 4:35 p. M. (rush hour/ traffic). I'm so nervous, shocked. . . . And lucky that there was no accident. Yes, 2 police cars came and helped me push off the road before the "tow truck" came tow my car home. Last week my friend and I when for a ride after we tune up my 1999 Acura. The engine stopped again. The battery is almost brand new, spark plug is new, every thing is good except it got to be "ignition switch". This week I did a research on "internet", I did find out "recall" ignition switch for 1999 Acura 3. 2 Tl but the previous owner get it fixed in 2002. I did called Acura 1-800-382-2238 mention about recall "ignition switch". I asked her if I taking my 1999 Acura dealer to get it fix (ignition switch), can I get "reimbursement" or money back, she told me know because it's due to wore and tear during 4 or 7 years period. What do you think about that? can you please help me about my situations because I do not want any one get hurt (accident) on the road. I did called Acura dealer at farmington hills, mi, I spoke to services technician about "ignition switch", he told me that it will cost me at least $289. 00 or maybe $600. 00 depend problem with "ignition switch or ignition interlock". Hopefully, I do not have to pay out of my pocket. Thank you for your time.

23 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 07/07/2009

Hi, I would like to officially file a complain against Acura. I have 1999 Acura 3. 2tl, the engine shuts off while driving on highway or even on idle. It's a intermittent issue and I noticed that it can happy anywhere or anytime which can result in fatal accident. I did some research on web and found out that lots of people have same or similar problem in Acura and Honda and point to recall faulty ignition switch. According to my dealer david mcdavid of austin is already been replaced in my car. They're clueless why I'm having this issue and offer no help to diagnose and fix the issue. I asked them to replaced the ignition switch again for no cost to me but they refused to do it. I need help for NHTSA to investigate this issue which may result in life threatening situation and let me know what else I need to do resolve this issue with Acura. Thanks in advance for your help and time yesterday evening, while I was going home from work, the car shut off and I see a smoke came out from dash board. I was able to pull the car to right lane and able to start the car after few tries.

24 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 06/27/2009

While traveling on highway at 60 mph, the automobile will randomly loose all electricity, ignition, and power items - brakes - steering - and engine stalls out completely, after a few seconds to a few minutes, the car can be re-started and driven again. Symptoms point to the ignition switch recall which was performed on this car a few years ago. Acura is aware of the problem and has issued a TSB / safety recall for this problem but they only replace the part once with the exact same part that will fail eventually just as the first one did. Local dealer ( first Acura of seekonk, MA. ) and the regional customer service department is claiming that I am responsible for all costs to resolve this serious known defect in Acuras design of this component. Is there anything that I can do other than knuckling down and paying for this repair out of my pocket?.

25 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 05/08/2009

I have a 1999 Acura 3. 2 Tl - there was an ignition interlock safety recall and it was checked by the dealer 07/17/06 - the total fee was $50. 15 and covered by factory warranty, for a half hour repair and part for for $1. 15. Since then, we had noted instances of the car stalling while driving, someitmes on the highway. The dealer refused to cover under the pre-existing condition / recall - they did report that the electrical part of the ignition switch was bad. I noted others reporting this same problem on the internet with this model. Now the charge was $303. 84 I have a relative with the same car and year and he had the same issue too. This is related to the initial recall and should be covered - it also could be very dangerous stalling out at high speed.

27 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 01/09/2009

I have a 1999 Acura 3. 2tl. Recently the electrical system suddenly shutdown entirely while driving local street, and smoke came out of the steering column, around ignition area. Upon further research, there was a recall back in 2002 for the ignition switch that exactly matched this dangerous symptom. Apparently the switch even after the recall fix, will still fail within 6-7 years. This horrifying experience was compounded by the fact that dealership refuse to take a look at the vehicle, stating that the recall ended when vehicle has above 80,000 miles on them.

28 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 12/05/2008

2003 Acura 3. 2 Tl on December 5, 2008 a faulty ignition switch on our 2003 Acura 3. 2 Tl allowed the key to be removed in any gear, resulting in a rollaway accident causing head, foot and hip injuries to our daughter after she parked the car in our slightly inclined driveway. Dealer agreed ignition switch was definitely faulty. Key should never come out in any gear but park. Our mileage on the date of accident was 82,430 miles. Shortly after we bought this car new, it started having intermittent no start/no crank problems, and sometimes it would start 5 or 10 minutes later. Each time the dealer could not duplicate problem and assured us they checked everything and couldn't find any problem. The car would be fine until it happened again. This problem continued up until just a few months ago. It has been well maintained and taken to dealer many times for same problem . They probably never inspected the ignition switch because our year car was never included in previous recalls of ignition switches, as it should have been. A faulty transmission on this same car went out on our daughter once about 5 months ago when she was driving. It was replaced under the extended warranty due to previous transmission recall.

29 Ignition Switch problem of the 2000 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

Ignition key switch intermittently works and then does not; causing the car to stall or not start. The car can be induced to start by shaking (vibrating) the keys while the key is in the ignition switch slot. This has the same symptoms as the Honda recall of the 1999 Acura Tl & cl's (along with various other Honda models). The symptoms that led to the previous recall caused the car to stall during operation putting the driver (& passengers) at risk of an accident. My vehicle is a 2000 Acura Tl and thus not covered by the recall.

30 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

My ignition switch has been recalled and the Acura website says it has been repaired. It has failed again. My transmission was suppose to have been repair a year ago. I left the car at the dealer and they told me it was fixed. I went out to the car and the transmission lockout still was not fixed. Then they told me they would have to something different. The car had not left the dealers lot and was not fixed at that time.
