Sent my customer's Acura to dealer last month for quitting problem, they did a transmission repair. Looked at car here again and found a bad ignition switch causing problem. Ignition switch appears to be covered by a recall, called dealer to verify. Not only did customer not get letter but even when vehicle is at dealer for repair recalls do not get done. Car quits on the highway while driving! .

Ignition lock failed allowing key to be removed in any position and not securing the auto in a parked condition. Hence the vehicle rolled back into another car. The vehicle in question has only 87243 miles on it and this part should not fail, especially as it did to allow the car to move when it was supposedly turned off, and in park. This vehicle has had previous transmission issues as well and was the subject of a recall.

My 1999 Acura Tl stalls on me on the road, this has happened several times, approximately 4 times in the past 3 months. This occurred while driving, meaning my car stalled while I was in traffic. I learned about a recall from the national highway traffic and safety authority. Recall numbers: - 02v120000 on 05/16/2002 - 05v025000 on 01/28/2005 - 03v423000 on 10/27/2003 these are all recalls with the same problems I have in my car. I fear for my safety and that of my families as we use this car on a daily basis. I do not know what caused this failure because this vehicle is well maintained.
American Honda to recall vehicles to repair ignition interlocks certain 1997 to 2002 Honda and Acura vehicles affected torrance, calif. , February 1, 2005 -- american Honda motor CO. , inc. Today announced a voluntary recall of certain Honda and Acura models to repair ignition switch interlocks. The interlock is intended to prevent removal of the ignition key unless the shift lever is placed in the "park" position. Some interlock levers may be improperly dimensioned, which could allow the operator to switch the ignition off and remove the key without putting the shift lever in the "park" position. The recall involves approximately 486,000 automatic transmission equipped vehicles - manual transmission equipped vehicles are not affected. Included in the recall are certain 1999 to 2002 Honda accord models and all 1997 to 2001 prelude models. Also included in the recall are certain 1999 to 2000 Acura Tl sedans. American Honda will contact owners of affected vehicles when parts are available and ask them to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to be repaired free of charge. Prior to the vehicle being repaired, drivers should follow the parking procedure in the owner's manual: apply the parking brake and shift the transmission to the "park" position before exiting the vehicle. Details regarding mailing dates and affected vehicles will be available on the Honda and Acura web sites on February 4, 2005. . Read more...

My 2000 Acura Tl has an ignition switch problem. I have contacted Acura several times to fix the problem but Acura will only pay for half the cost of repair. This is clearly a defective manufacturing issue but they refuse to accept full responsibility. The danger is the key can be removed without engaging the car in park. The car can roll and injure or kill someone.
The contact owns a 1999 Acura Tl. While the vehicle was in gear and the brake pedal was depressed, the key independently fell out of the ignition and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to restart after multiple attempts. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed as an ignition switch failure. The contact was advised that the failure may be a part of an open recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

Consumer can remove the key from the ignition switch when vehicle isn't in park.
Called dealership, Acura of boardman service dept. , said they didn't know what it was and had never heard of ingnition failure being a problem. Did research because of the odd and damaging behavior of the ignition switch to my vehicle and became aware of major recal on ignition switches. However the recall does not include my specific maker in my specific year but it does include my make and a different year. Will contact Acura/Honda about having them replace. It is definitely a hazard! dt.
