BMW 328 owners have reported 2 problems related to diesel engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Engine needs to be replaced. Bad timing chain. There is currently class action lawsuit with my exact year for 328i but I am 328d. From my research it appears the diesel models have experienced more problems than gas engines. Europe has done a recall with diesel engines due to this issue. Why not in USA? this needs to be covered and addressed. I maintained my vehicle flawlessly the entire period. Since BMW knew of this issue the warranty should have been covered up to 150k miles. I was quoted $21,000 for new engine, which is $5,000 more than its worth being very generous with value. This is unacceptable. I actually wanted buy another BMW as I just listed vehicle for sale days before this happened. Im glad I didnt sell my car even though im at a real financial loss here. It wouldn't be right. BMW wasnt right to conceal this in first place. I would have paid for replacement parts. Now they want capitalize on new engine parts and labor. This cannot be allowed. Diesel vehicles must be added to recall.

I started my car on October 23, 2019, driving down the street I noticed a loud noise and when I stopped the car was shaking, I turned around and when back home, had the car towed to the dealer. The dealer said I needed a new engine due to "lack of lubrication". I was then informed it would cost me $16,800. We have 125k miles on a diesel engine! I was told there were metal flakes in the oil and no one can tell me what failed in the engine. I have followed all of the required services and had all of the recalls done which were many. We have the fuel system replaced, after the car completed stalled and had to have it towed, luckily there was a recall on that. Since we have had the fuel system replaced we have had nothing but problems, we were sold a lemon, and the BMW cooperate office will not do anything, and I was informed they only warranty their cars to 50k. Now I am out a car that I paid 50k for 5 years ago. There were no warning lights regarding the engine, and when oil was checked all levels were good.
