BMW 328 owners have reported 10 problems related to engine noise (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Recently I drove my car and the engine started to make a high pitched noise. I smelled a gasy burning smell coming from the car. I brought it to a mechanic and he said bolts had come lose in the engine. I asked if it was something I had done and he said he had seen it with many BMW cars out of nowhere.

Takata recall - I have had two separate major issues with this vehicle since I purchased it in may 2018. Over a month ago , my car started to make a loud squealing noise while idled at stop light and would ease up when I would accelerate. My engine was shaking so badly that I could feel it with my foot on brake petal. My roommate heard the squealing noise from inside my house and came out to see what was wrong. Entire engine was shaking as if something was not on properly. Happened one other time since while coming back from work. Second major issue occurred while on the way to work Monday morning - I was making a semi sharp right turn off ruffin mill road in chester and my service engine soon light immediate came on and the car went from 35mph to 0 - my car felt as if I couldn't turn the wheel and engine stopped. I cut the car off then back on - light went away and I was able to drive. Less than 5 minutes later, I was coming to a stop light, about to turn left and the same thing happened. Cut car off then back on and it was okay. I have had a lot of issues with this car and even had to get brand new starter two weeks after purchase. Attachment shows all issue with car given to me by mainentance.

While attempting to pass at approx 50 mph on a two lane mountain highway, the car suddenly lost power, warning lights and buzzer sounded. The message on screen reported 'drivetrain malfunction, drive moderately'. The car continued to operate, vibrating badly whenever I gave it gas. We limped home, shut it off. Two hours later I restarted it and all the error warnings disappeared and the car is running normally again.

After the car is stopped at a stop sign and when I try to accelerate the car, it hesitates to move even after I push the gas pedal. The car struggles to move forward and after pressing in hard it moves. The initial delay or the initial response time is huge. The time lag is large. The engine makes noise and will struggle to move. I hope the NHTSA will review the matter with BMW and see what needs to be done.
March 14, 2014. While starting the car, I heard a laud snapping sound coming from the engine compartment at passenger side. A moment later when taking a left turn I heard another strange noise form the same area. After that the engine started to sound differently with a small noticeable vibration. Turns out that all 4 engine mount bolts on the passenger side were snapped. It cost more than $1000 to fix it. This was very unexpected.

The vehicle engine shut-offs in motion. The first occurrence, the vehicle was going 15mph & the engine failed while turning into a block (residential area), after idling rough and high pitch noise coming from the engine. The 2nd occurrence, the engine failed after exiting the freeway. That time, the vehicle was stopped on a hill when the failure occurred. The 3rd time, the vehicle was at a stop when the engine failed. Once the failure occurred, the vehicle was place in park mode & re-started. The engine started again & the vehicle was driven home. Note: since January 2012, the vehicle has been to the BMW service department several times for idling rough and high pitch noise from engine complaints. The issue now has progress to engine failure in motion.
While driving a loud bang was heard. The car made noise after that driving it. The car was then taken to the dealership, and upon examination it was discovered the mounting bolts ( aluminum ) for right engine support arm broke. They were replaced by the dealership as they said it was a flaw in the engine bolts. The car had 40,984 miles.
