Chevrolet Astro owners have reported 13 problems related to brake abs warning light (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Astro based on all problems reported for the Astro.
I entered a parking lot at 10 mph and slowed to 5 mph and turned left into a parking space and tried to stop. The brakes did not work and I crashed into the vehicle next to me. I immediately checked the brake fluid level and it was full. No abs light has ever been on, and I just recently passed my vehicle safety check with no codes on the system.

While pulling into a driveway at lowspeed I applied the brakes. The abs light came on and all braking power was lost. My vehicle struck the one infront of me. I have been able to duplicate this low speed loss of braking.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Astro. The contact stated when braking on any uneven road surface, the anti-lock brake system would activate independently with the illumination of the abs warning light making it difficult to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in three separate crashes as a result of the failure. On one occasion while traveling 45 mph, the brakes were applied abruptly but did not respond and the contact crashed into another vehicle. There was one reported injury and a police report was filed. The contact stated that the abs was activated at the time of the crash. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage 151,000.
On several occasions over the past few months, the abs light on my van has been coming on and when I apply the brakes, the van jerks around on the road and pulls to the left. I have almost hit other cars on many of these occasions. I had my mechanic look at it recently and he said he checked out the braking system and can see no visible reason for this happening.

Abs light on with multiple codes and abs brakes are activating at slow speeds on dry pavement when the shouldn't be, causing an increasing stopping time and near miss accident.
: the contact stated while braking, the abs light illuminated and there was a pulsating effect with the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined the left hub and sensor had to be replaced. The problem recurred 5000 miles later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the right sensor and hub needed to be replaced along with the control module of the whole abs system. The manufacturer was contacted and agreed to pay for half of the repairs. Updated 11/09/06.
The abs light and brake light on the dash illuminated intermittently while the vehicle was in motion. This occurred again with another general motors vehicle that the consumer owns. No repair work had been made.
Was driving and a truck pulled out of drive way in front of me. Hit the brakes and they worked for a split second but then went out causing an accident. Since that they brake tight and abs light came on and continues to stay on at all times now. I do have brakes just not anti-lock. Have checked the whole system to fix and found that it is a common problem. The abs module is no longer available so can not remedy this problem. I live in a state that has safety and emissions tests that it will not pass. I have done research on this issue to try to get fixed and parts for hours to no reveal. This item should be a recall due to the danger of failure and number of complaints. Also most people will not report these problems because the brakes still work just not the anti-lock part of iut after all my brake pedal is not spongy or low in anyway actually they are good. I cannot even find a good one in the junk yards as I have bought 2 units and both were bad so had to return them. What a waste of 8 hours total to find that they had same problem. I have 192354 miles on it now and still runs strong. I feel that each time I drive it I am taking a risk of hurting other people including myself. We cannot afford to replace this vehicle so it is like playing russian roulette when driving. Gm needs to fix these vehicles before any one dies and they get sued (if this hasn't already happened). Like I said it has been a great reliable vehicle other than this problem. So everyone that does have this problem needs to report it so gm is forced to address this problem.
:the contact stated while stopping in a parking lot the abs light illuminated and the brake pedal became hard to depress. Once the vehicle began to accelerate a noise came from the abs. The noise ceased at approximately 20 mph. Additionally, the abs light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, they only ran the VIN to check for recalls. It was also seen by a independent repair shop who determined there was no problem with the anti lock braking system.
The abs light illuminated intermittently.
Abs light illuminated. When braking sometimes brake pedal gets really hard. Consumer has to pump on brake to stop. This happens maybe once a day. Please provide any further information.
