1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 07/11/2012

Just before stopping at an intersection the brake pedal lifted slightly. There was a moaning sound from under the hood on the driver's side and the van drifted into the crosswalk ( lost braking ). I threw it into reverse to stop. After replacing the brake master cylinder, hydro booster, power steering pump and gear and hoses, the problem persisted. I finally found someone with the same problem on an on-line forum who suggested disabling the abs by pulling the fuse. Problem immediately went away when anti -lock brake was disabled.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 04/12/2006

On March 26, 2008, I took my 2002 chevy Astro van to be serviced. Mileage 93,829,I had no brakes. The master cylinder was determined to be the cause of the failure and was replaced. On April 12, 2008, once again I had no brakes, this time it resulted in me getting into and accident. I took the van back to the same repair shop. When they put it on the lift they said the whole braking system was melted until the point of the hose bursting. He said he never saw anything like this in his 20 years of service. They did not want to touch it stating it was now a liability to them and directed me to chevy. Chevy concurred, four different people said they have never seen or have a clue at what caused this. They called in gm, who also never had seen this, but bounced the blame on a questionably installed master cylinder. Chevy said they can replace the whole braking system because they do not know what is wrong, but since they do not know what caused this or why fuses didn't blow to prevent it, it could happen again. We hired our own car consultant to look at the van, he too has never seen or heard of anything like this. The heat and melted brake lines ran closer than 1/4 inch away from the gas tank. I do not want to take the risk of driving again with my children and loosing brakes or possibly igniting the gas tank.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 12/25/2002

Upon approach to an intersection, I began to slow down early because the road was covered with ice and snow. The vehicle began to slide a little, so I pressed firmly on the brake to engage the abs brakes. I heard a very loud snap! and the brake pedal was gone from beneath my foot. The vehicle proceeded into the intersection, narrowly missing becoming broadsided from the left. I swung the steering wheel to the right, engaged the parking brake (which did little to slow forward momentum) and waited while the vehicle rolled to a stop, inches from a telephone pole. *** upon being towed to a dealership for repair, it was discovered that the problem was catastrophic failure of the master cylinder component in the braking system. The metal casting has a crack which is almost 6 inches long which runs along the underside of the part for almost its full length. The metal wall of the cylinder has been extruded by the force of the explosion which occurred during braking. *** I have the part and I am willing to share photographs of the problem. *** it is interesting to note that a Chevrolet representative, contacted after the fact, told me that this failure was most likely due to "bad braking habits".
