Pin holes in steel brake lines causing complete brake failure. Fortunately vehicle was sitting when brake petal was applied for starting. When pressing brake to start vehicle, petal went completely to floor. When checking under vehicle to analyze problem, pin holes leaks were observed in various places from front to rear in steel lines. I fear what may have happened had the vehicle been in motion, around pedestrians, and/or, on the road.

I was driving pulling a trailer on the freeway when suddenly the traffic stop. I applied the brakes at a safe distance when suddenly my brakes when all the way to the floor I applied the emergency brakes and stop. I had to go thru the emergency lane. I told my son to push the brake pedal while I was underneath and the brake lines broke. They where all rusted out. I had to get a wrecker to take it home. If you need to see my van call me so you can see the brake lines.

We live in the country with gravel roads. All of our Chevrolet vehicles have had brake lines rot out. Our Ford and Dodge vehicles have not. The Chevrolet Astro vans we have exhibit a propensity for the brake line rotting out over the gas tank as well as the brake lines over the front frame members. The brake lines on 20 year old Ford vehicles look as good as new under the same conditions. My 1994 Chevrolet k-3500 pickup has blown brakes lines due to rot along with the back part of the frame that rusted out. I just read where you have advised washing the underside of Chevrolet vehicles several times a year. Well the lines rotting out on top of the gas tank and the front frame rails will not get washed. Whoever made the "wash it" decision evidently does not drive older Chevrolets. If there was no problem then why did Chevrolet evidently change their lines? or maybe they did not and the newer ones just have not started rotting out yet. Why do Ford brake lines, exhaust systems, frames, and bodies not rust like gm. Someone is hiding something. The Chevrolet brake line are definitely a safety hazzard due to rusting thru.

The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Astro. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 mph he depressed the brake pedal but the brakes would not respond. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the brake line was replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

I have an '04 chevy Astro van with ~ 88k miles. It is serviced every 3,000 miles. Recently, my brakes failed. The cause was a worn brake line near the left front wheel. It had rubbed a hole it the line and I lost all the brake fluid.
Vehicle: 2003 chevy Astro van defect summary: factory design directs leaked battery acid to drip down on a steel brake line. Details: the (+) battery terminal spontaneously broke off this vehicles oem delco battery. The breakage was due to either: 1) cable connector being over-torqued at the gm factory, or 2) an integral fault within the battery. The design of this year-model of Astro is such that the natural path for acid drip-page is on to a steel brake line located below, and in front, of the battery. I am going to have the brake line replaced by a local certified mechanic because the line is severely corroded due to the acid exposure. Because of the inaccessibility of the brake line and its connections, the repair cost will not be cheap. Please note that the battery and cable have not been exposed to any post-manufacture misuse or disturbance. The problem is solely due to poor placement of the hydraulic line, coupled with the factory induced battery breakage. I have digital photographs for your inspection of the broken battery terminal, the geometry of the battery compartment, the (brake) hydraulic line, and the resulting corrosion.
The brake line rubbed up against the power steering pump, eventually rubbing through. I lost braking power and nearly caused an accident. Within minutes, I went from having brakes to having to push the brake peddle to the floor to stop. I had a local mechanic fix the problem at a substantial cost.
Highway traffic suddenly slowed due to an accident ahead. The steel brake line to the rear brakes failed due to excessive rust during an emergency stop on highway. The front brakes were able to safely stop the vehicle with no contact with any other vehicles. Steering was also very difficult during the stop possibly due to abs action, but no wheel lock ever occurred.

Operated the van for 30 minutes. Parked it in a garage and shutoff engine. Ten minutes later the garage smoke alarm sounded. The van had filled the garage full of smoke. Opened the door and attempted to restart the engine to remove from garage. Display reported an assortment of warnings and engine starter failed to activate. Opened hood to discover flames coming from the underside on the engine. Called for fire department and made first attempt to use a fire extinguisher to stop flames from the engine compartment, was unsuccessful. Went under the van's driver-side and could now see the source of fire. Extinguished the fire, then it shortly erupted again. Extinguished again. Placed the key into the steering column to move transmission to neutral, so that I could push the vehicle out of the garage. Sparks immediately flew from the driver-side underside and re-ignited the fire. The transmission lever was no longer engaged to the transmission (control was limp) and the key seized in the column. Went underneath the vehicle to extinguish the fire a third time. After this I removed the positive power lead from the battery to stop any further electrical shorts. Fire subsided. Fire department arrived and ordered a wrecker to drag the vehicle from the garage for safety of the house. At this time it was discovered that the fire had also destroyed the emergency brake system. The parking brake was seized in the off position. Chevrolet dealership repair order states as follows: "appears ebcm shorted and caught fire burning a hole through the brake line. Parking brake cable. Shifter cable and wiring harness. " the ebcm fire not only caused the loss of normal braking operation, the poor location of unit and subsequent fire it started destroyed the emergency braking system and severed the controls to the transmission. This leaves a driver with a complete loss of braking functions and no means to slow the vehicle through down shifting the transmission. $6000 of damage.
