My spouse was driving and we were stopped at a yard sale. We returned to the vehicle and started to back out when she noticed the steering wheel was extremely hard to turn. Then when she wanted to stop the vehicle the brakes were extreme hard to operate. After some research we learned of hundreds of brake malfunctions on similar vehicles and other cars that use similar brake booster technology.

Hi, I was driving this van when all of a sudden it stops. I had a very hard problem of trying to get off the road with no brakes or steering. I had it towed into service. They replaced everything fuel pump, sending unit, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor and reset the timing. It never did show up a check engine light or showed a code that something was wrong. I drove it two days later and it did the same thing. They checked it out and drove it again for a week and it happen again. I spent $1200 trying to get this safe to drive. It is as if the key was shut off. Finally with some of my knowledge about what can cause this to happen I checked the battery. It was only one year old. It showed up as bad under a load. When I took the van back to the repair shop they said battery showed good. Finally I took the battery back to auto zone they showed it as bad also and replaced it. Never had a problem after that. So the problem you are having with the key switch in all those cars you may have to double check the batterys. Voltage to the microprocessor should stay within limits of apx 8 volts. This might be more of a problem than the key switch. Thanks for reading this letter.
I just got home & was backing around to where I park when the brake pedal started vibrating. I did manage to park. The next day the vibrating stopped when a grating noise was made. Suddenly the brake pedal came way up. It does have some brakes but they are hard to depress. Suddenly my power steering is gone. There was no indication of problems with either beforehand. This van just passed inspection in mid-August, and has always been taken care of.

Vehicle lost all electrical power to every system that is controlled by the ignition being turned on. Driver was in the process of making a u-turn around a curbing island in the divided traffic road when all electrical was interrupted while the steering wheel was turned all the way to the left. Condition caused steering to become difficult, brake pedal went clear to the floor, air conditioning and radio and headlights all went off. Condition was repeatable with exception of brake pedal, each time steering was turned to the left. Inspection under vehicle found that main power cable is routed across front side of main frame motor mount member. There was a slight curve in the way the wire was routed and each time the steering was turned to the left, the inner tie rod end for the right wheel came in contact with the wire harness. After many miles, the protective cover and then the actual wire insulation was rubbed through. This caused a direct short to ground through the steering parts of all (switched while running) electrical components of the vehicle. Problem was corrected by taping the wire insulation, then taping the protective covering. I then had to fabricate a bracket to screw to the steel crumple member to hold the harness back from the steering linkage.

Abs was activated at slow speeds causing a substantial drop in braking power.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Astro van. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle he noticed that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the fuel lines were severely corroded and needed to be replaced. In addition, the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake pedal sunk into the floor board. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the brakes lines were also corroded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 82,257 and the current mileage was 88,000.
Going to stop at a slow speed engages abs , causing van to not stop unless breakers were slamed on hard and hops of stoping!.

Abs coming on at very low speeds on dry pavement (under 5mph/8kmh). It doesn't do it every time, but quite often at low speeds, like coming to a red light, stop sign or parking. Of course, there is no need for the abs come on at such low speeds and especially not on dry pavement.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Astro van. While traveling 5 mph, the contact noticed that the brakes would no longer engage and that the steering wheel had become difficult to turn. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 160,000.
I was driving approximately 30 miles per hour along slightly snow-covered road towards stopped traffic at red light on a slight downgrade. I stepped on the brakes gentle, as required by the conditions, but the abs system started to shudder and the vehicle did not brake at all. I hit a stopped vehicle at the intersection and even with a relatively slow speed impact, our vehicle was written off and the other was towed away because it could not be driven. Our van was drivable, but just barely, and was subsequently written off by the insurance company. I was charged with careless driving which was absolutely not the case. We have another vehicle of the same year and similar model and it does the same thing occasionally but so far this has not resulted in any further collisions. We have owned Astro vans since they were first marketed in 1985 and this is the first one to act like this. We purchased 1985, 1992, 1998, and 2003 models (2). I am asking my wife, rose, who is also the registered owner of the vehicle to submit this report on my behalf. Please respond to her with any resolutions. We purchased the salvage from the insurance company so it is still in our possession although not on the road.

2001 chevy Astro van abs system . I have replaced every part and still have problems. I understand that this is a constant problem of this van. I think they should recall these vans before something bad happens.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Astro. The power steering pump failed while driving approximately 10 mph. The contact applied the brakes, but nothing happened. He then depressed the brake pedal all the way to the floor, but the vehicle did not stop. The vehicle crashed into his home. The vehicle was towed to a shop and the mechanic stated that there was failure within the powertrain. He further stated that the power steering and power brakes were connected to the same unit, causing both to fail simultaneously. He called gm and a representative from the engineering department stated that the brakes should have worked. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 120,000.

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Astro van. The contact stated that the brake pedal went all the way to the floor while making a left turn. The contact also stated that the vehicle failed to start when the vehicle was parked and the wheels were turned to the left. A mechanic looked under the vehicle and found that the wiring harness that was located near the front passenger side tire had burned out. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but the contact was unsure of what would be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown but the current mileage was 67,000.
Problem with brakes and bearings last year the brakes starting pulsating and had to be replaced because of rusting and pitting. This year the bearings went out and had to be replaced. This vehicle has 34,000 original miles.
When the brakes were applied, the pedal traveled to the floor. Also lost steering control. Blown power steering shaft seal had to be replaced.
While braking, intermittently the brake pedal became hard to depress, which caused extended stopping distance. The dealership was unable to resolve the problem.
When applying the brakes the brake pedal goes to the floor, almost resulting in a collision. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer was not able to solve the problem.
Brakes are soft and non-responsive, pull to the right or left and sometimes grabs.
