I am complaining of the safety issues regarding the abs computer system. I have put my vehicle in the shop to be checked out by a few car repair facilities and all have said the same thing my abs cpu. My van is hesitating terribly and causing the van to not accelerate properly. I have nearly been in three accidents since the problem has been occurring. I have also done some research on this issue via internet and found that many people are having the same problem across the USA. And gm is blaming it on the weather conditions in the north but the problems are happening to Astro vans(2003) across the entire us. This is a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. .

2001 chevy Astro -- does not stop when brakes are applied. Just keeps "sliding". Only way to fix is to remove the fuse for the abs brakes. If fuse is in, when brakes are applied, the vehicle shutters and growls and just continues to slide and the vehicle does not stop. This happens when you are traveling at slow speeds such as coming to a stop or pulling into parking spaces. ---very dangerous--thank god husband is a mechanic and realized that taking the fuse out would stop this problem, but causes it so that there is no abs.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Astro. While driving 10 mph the antilock brake system activated and the contact had to swerve to avoid striking another vehicle. The failure occurred without warning when braking at low speeds. The manufacturer stated that this vehicle was not included in the recall and will not pay for the repair. The current mileage is 88,000, and failure mileage was 85,000.

: the contact stated while depressing the brake pedal at low speeds, the pedal was harder to depress and had a longer stopping distance. The dealer was not contacted.
: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various low speeds, there was an increased stopping distance, and the antilock brakes activated without warning. There was a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The dealer and manufacturer were alerted. Updated 12/15/2006 - the dealer told the consumer that the Astro was build on the same frame as the silverado which was being recalled.
While braking at low speed abs activates increasing stopping distance almost causing accident weather not a factor road condition not a factor also happens during parking lot maneuvers turning into parking spots abs activates and seems not to stop note: this is an 2003 all wheel drive Astro van.
: the contact stated the abs activates at speeds below 5 mph. This causes an excessive stopping distance. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. Updated 4/11/2006 -.
: the contact stated the abs activated at speeds of less than 5mph. While pulling into a parking lot the abs activated and caused a total loss of the brakes. There was no warning before the activations occurred. There is a service bulletin, NHTSA item # 10000062 for the abs activation. The vehicle had not been inspected.
1) several times (~10) in the past few weeks when we're almost to a stop (~ 5mph) the abs kicks in and it feels like we're losing braking power 2) we have been able to stop, but it feels like a crash is bound to happen 3) independent mechanic indicates computer code telling loss of wheel speed gm has a recall of the front wheel hub/bearing assembly for exactly this reason - but it doesn't include the Astro - only "trucks" - why not the Astro??? it's basically the same vehicle.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Astro van. The contact stated that there was unwanted activation of the abs system. When the contact applied the brakes at low speeds the abs activated and did not stop the vehicle. This resulted in extended stopping distance. The vehicle was at a dealership, and they could not find the cause of the problem. The dealership could feel the problem, but did not know how to remedy it. The dealership road tested the vehicle and duplicated the problem and the fault would have to be more consistent to offer repairs. The consumer spoke with a mechanic, and he stated that recall 05v379000 was issued for a 2001 Chevrolet suburban regarding the abs. The contact stated that this vehicle was experiencing the same symptoms as indicated in the recall. The manufacturer confirm ed that this type of vehicle was not included in the recall. Updated 01/04/06.
When I apply brakes while driving at slow speeds (about 10 mph), the anti-lock braking system engages. This greatly increases the stopping distance, and gives the feeling that the vehicle may not stop as intended. This failure can also cause the vehicle to "pull" to left or right during the application of the brakes.
While driving at real low speeds the anti-lock brakes kicked into gear and it was hard to getthe vehicle to stop. The consumer contacted gm but received no response. The consumer then took the vehicle to the local dealer and the mechanic disconnected the abs system. This problem started on August 1, 2005. The consumer could hear the brakes pulsating.
Dt: the consumer stated his wife put her foot on the brake and it did not stop; it accelerated when she hit the brake and she hit two parked cars on 7-23-05. She was going approx. 3-5 mph. This is not the first time this has happened. Previously, they had felt some pulsating in the pedal, but it became progressively worse. This is the first time they have felt it accelerate. No lights came on prior to this or previously. This occurred during normal braking, on a dry road.
At about 52,000 miles my 2001 Chevrolet Astro began having abs problems. Abs would activate at very slow speeds. Almost involved in several minor crashes due to car not stopping while entering a parking space or in rush hour traffic are pulling up to intersections. Abs kicks in and instead of vehicle stopping it keeps pulsing the brakes as if I were traveling faster. Have not had problem examined by Chevrolet dealer at this point. I noticed that Chevrolet is planning a recall for some of its trucks and SUV's for the identical problem I am experiencing however my model is not currently being considered for the recall.
Shift indicator was indicating the wrong gear. While driving the road the indicator was moving, but the shifter itself. Every time I drove the vehicle this happened. It was taken to dealer to fix and stated there were a lot of complaint. This occurred about a month ago antilock brakes are applying when dry. When going about 3-4 mph the antilock brakes will engaged. This problem was random. Have not taken for repairs.
The consumer's anti-lock brakes don't work properly when pulling into a parking space or under 10 mph. The consumer had to pump the brakes in order to get vehicle to stop or for warning before slowing down. The vehicle has all wheel drive. The consumer pulled fuse for anti-lock brake many times, and it worked fine without the fuse. Pulling the anti-lock brake fuse deactivated the anti-lock brakes capability. With the anti-lock brake fuse in, the consumer nearly runs into the back of vehicles when stopping. The consumer stated that the incidents happens only when the fuse is in and occured three times at low speed for no reason.
While driving at 5 mph consumer attempted to park in the driveway and without warning lost steering ability. Also, brakes were inoperable, and would not stop the vehicle. The vehicle collided with the outside wall of the garage. There was considerable damage to the garage and the vehicle. Consumer sustained no bodily injuries. Sliding door doesn't unlock to open. Dealer replaced ps pump because pump drive shaft was broken, and reinstalled side door.
While driving on dry pavement anti-lock brakes engaged. As a result, vehicle collided into a house. No report of air bag deployment.
When t brakes were applied pedal went to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer has inspected vehicle. Please provide additional information.

I attempted to stop behind a car making a turn. As I depressed the brakes there was no response, the pedal went to the floor. After I purchased the van I had taken the van to the dealer about the brakes were not right, but I was told that was the abs brakes were like that. Later I took it again in the winter when I checked the brakes on snow. The brakes were making a grinding sound--again the dealer said that's normal. I am not driving it now because I feel it is unsafe. After several calls to gm allegation department I have not heard from them about air bags that did not deploy. This accident with the van involved two other cars and injuries to two people. I have seen several 2000 Astro vans have the same problems submitted to your web page. They too are afraid of driving the vans. We need help. ;.
Brake pedal would push itself back up intermittently when applied and cause extended stopping distance. Dealer was not notified at this time. Feel free to provide any further information.
Brakes have had intermittent problems since new. Returned first time when left front locked up on dry, smooth pavement panic stop. Jerked wheel from hand and turned van sideways. This is after slight intermittent pulling from time van was new. Numerous trips (5) to dealer has failed to fix problem. Now additional problem of no braking action while attempting slow stop has resulted in running into intersection with oncoming traffic. This occurred while trying to stop from approximately 15mph. Applying the brakes resulted in no slow down for a short amount of time. It finally stopped with the front bumper in the intersection as I attempted to apply the parking brake to stop. Gm's service has said that until it occurrs while it is in the shop, there is nothing else they will do. They did say they hoped I didn't have an accident because of their brakes.
Under panic stop, the brake goes to the floor and the van will not stop. The failed to stop about 7 feet. (dot number: pjhf tiresize: p215-75r15).
Has a hard time stopping/ when stopping you can hear the anti-lock system surge and the brake pedal goes to the floor. /this is more pronounced when the ground is rough and your trying to stop.
While traveling 30-40mph applied brakes to stop and had no brakes, pedal was hard and resisted, did not hit anything, lost all power steering however, engine still running, had to shut down vehicle and restart it. Contacted dealership, but no solution was found.
I have tried to work with Chevrolet the corporation and the dealership on this braking problem I have been having, the brakes pump then go to the floor not always stopping my vehicle. They have had my van for over a week now and still say they cant find nothing. My husband and I have both experieced this problem, we had it in the shop last July and they said their was nothing. We feel this is dangerous and compromised my saftey and the safety of my children. Please help.
It was very dangerous, imagine driving at 65 mph on a hwy without brake and steering control. I was lucky it went out on me while in the driveway.
At 3-4 mph powersteering/brakes went out. Towed to dealer, powersteering pump had failed. When the brakes and the steering failed, the vehicle coasted into a telephon pole causing $4,000 damages to the vehicle. The manufacturer paid for everything.
Loss of braking due to defective rotors deteriorating from within. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under a recall or warranty. Consumer stated that the dealer admitted that this was a common problem with metallic brake linings, the steel peels away from the rotors.
