There a deep gash/crack in the dashboard onthe passenger side that starts at the upper left corner of passenger airbag! very concerned after I googled this problem and can see that there are instances of this on gm vehicles 'all over the internet and the complaints date back to 2006. Also noting that most experience this problem about 24-48 months after new vehicle ownership, this is clearly a manufacturer problem and a safety problem! #1 if the airbag deploys either from necessity or randomly due to the structure of the dashboard being compromised, the dashboard could break apart into small sharp pieces that could be like "shrapnel" and cause severe injury or worse! #2 since the structure is compromised, what is the written documentation that there are no safety factors that need to be addressed if the airbag does randomly deploy while driving?! in this instance, it could also result in injury or death should a driver be startled at the unwarranted deployment of the airbag and swerve the vehicle or worse, my dealership, kuni of sacramento was only willing to repair if I paid a portion of the cost, and gm paid a portion. This is clearly a manufacturer problem; therefore, why should I pay any portion of the repair cost? I also noticed that most that paid for their repairs had recurrence of the same problem within 24 months or less!!!! #1 a consumer should not have to pay repairs for manufacturer problems and, #2 if the dealership and or gm is unwilling to provide this "at no cost to consumer service " and they state the vehicle is safe, then a written guarantee that this airbag will not deploy randomly while driving the vehicle, then a wriiten statement must be provided to all of us as consumers of gm products by general motors, inc!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that while accelerating from a complete stop, the driver and passenger air bags failed to deploy after another vehicle crashed into the contact's passenger front and rear side. The contact sustained bruised ribs, spine, and head injuries. The passenger sustained left and right arm injuries. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000. Mah.
The dashboard on my Avalanche has developed a fairly significant crack right next to the passenger side airbag. The crack starts from towards the windshield side and leads up to and terminates at the crevice where the airbag is located. This in my opinion jeopardizes the integrity of the airbag. The concerns are that (a) the airbag may not deploy in the intended direction (b) may get ruptured due to making contact with the sharp edges of the crack or (c) may deploy unintentionally due to the weakness of the material holding it in place. This is a safety issue and gm needs to address it as such.
Was driving home on the highway and swerved hitting the divider with the front left corner of vehichle. The seatbelts did not hold me in my seat and my head shattered through the window striking the street light lamp. Airbags also did not deploy meanwhile I was on the highway going abaout 57mph. The injuries were drastic including partial amputation of my ear, I was in a coma for a few week, 3 skull fractures, tbi, brain bleeding and the list of injuries continue to grow!.

The fix airbag warning light activated on drivers information panel. This warning means that the airbag will not deploy in an accident. Gm is fully aware that the 2003 airbag system has faulty wiring connectors on the driver's side foot panel but never recalled this vehicle to fix the problem. Instead, they published a tech bulletin explaining how to fix the faulty wiring. I contacted gm and they refused to repair the faulty airbag system wiring at their cost. Many consumers that own Avalanche 2003 SUV ' s have complained about this safety problem but denied recovery from gm. Recall of all affected Avalanche 2003 models should be mandated.

Rear ended a SUV at 40 mph without breaking and the air bagsa did not deploy.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving 55 mph, the driver fell asleep and crashed into a bridge. The air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained several broken bones, two black eyes and a back injury. The driver was transported to the hospital via helicopter where she was placed on life support for fifty days. The passenger sustained a t-12 compression fracture in her back, a fractured right kneecap and a lacerated right hand. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was filed. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 134,000. The VIN was unavailable.
Recently my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche has begun to shut off while driving which causes the vehicle to lose power. Another important safety issue, the brakes began to press all the way to the floor while braking. On August 3, 2011 while my son was driving the vehicle approaching a stop light, he pressed the brakes which went to the floor and rear ended vehicle in front that was making a turn. The front bumper is now damaged ( t-boned) and the air bags did not deploy. I'm not very pleased that I never received any notices about the braking system. I can't afford to make monthly payments and still have to pay costly maintenance fees. I can not afford to jeopardize my life and my family, especially my granddaughter. Something has to be done about these safety issues: braking, cutting off while driving and no deployed air bags.
Tl- the contact owned a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact's son was driving at an unknown rate of speed when his vehicle collided with a guardrail. As a result of the impact, the vehicle made a tailspin and veered the vehicle into the opposite lane of traffic. The contact's son's vehicle made impact with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The air bags did not deploy during the incident. The contact's son sustained injuries to his head and back and received medical attention at the scene. The contact's son was transported to a hospital(vcu school of medicine 201 e marshall st #4-100, richmond, va 23298 804 828-9788) where he was treated for glass removal from his head and back. The driver of the other vehicle also sustained injuries resulting from the collision. The other driver was taken to the same hospital for treatment, however, the injuries were unknown. A police was filed at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene and taken to a tow yard, the vehicle was destroyed due to the damage from the accident. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Jo.
Service air bag warning stays on at any speed and the air bags will not deploy in an accident! dealer says gm only has a service bullitin on the problem but no recall yet! is gm liable in an accident if the air bags fail to deploy?.

Dash crack far left corner on 07 Avalanche causes airbag unit to not sit properly in mounts. Area on indicated part of dash flimsy not reinforced. Damage caused by heat (speculating,) spilt 2" from 0" in 6hrs during drive from san diego CA to las vegas nv, no prior damage or signs of stress. Due to passenger airbag not seated properly, afraid if airbag deployed may not deploy correctly. Dealer considers crack cosmetic, says airbag is independent and should not be affected which I agree but that doesn't mean it will open if it can be "jarred" from its seating in the dash if it can dislodge. And in an accident with enough force to deploy airbag it could be thrust upward from its seating and thus changing the angles of which it is intended to cover during deployment. I see a potential flaw here due to oversight in engineering and feel it needs further review. I have included a video I found on youtube that shows a dash in a 07 tahoe (same dash as 07 Avalanche) which is cracked the same way, it clearly shows how due to this crack the airbag unit is not secure in its seating and could potentially "jump out" as well the flimsiness in the dash area I am speculating towards lack of reinforcement. . 2004 chevy Avalanche sir light (service airbag) remains on constantly after several attempts to repair at chevy dealer. When the service airbag light is on, the airbag system will not deploy airbags if involved in an accident. No death or injury yet and hopefully will not be in an accident while driving back and forth to the dealer over and over again. But how much money and time should you spend on something that is out of your control but could cost you your life if an event occurs that you need the airbag to deploy.
I have a 2004 chevy Avalanche which I bought new that was involved in a t-bone collision at approx. 35 mph across the front end of the vehicle . The air bag did not deploy nor did the shoulder harness latch even though I had my seat belt on. I feel this may be a safety concern so I am making you aware of this. Problem since I was injured . The car I hit had pulled out of a shopping center acoss in front of me it was a chevy cavalier , which I hit on the drivers side between the front and rear wheels.
Son hit a tree head on totaled Avalanche front end air bag did not deploy why??????????.
A guy ran through a stop sign which caused me to hit him near the end of his vehicle. He was trying an xterra and I hit hm head on near the end of his vehicle however my airbags did not deploy. The entire front end of my truck is gone, radiator is exposed and hood pushed up to the windshield.
Traveling at 55 mph and rear-ended a towed vehicle without lights. Driver side airbag did not deploy.
We were involved in an accident where we hit another vehicle and then rolled. The air bags never deployed at all and my husbands seat belt let loose before the vehicle had stopped.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. On March 27, 2007, the contact crashed into an embankment head on at 45 mph. The vehicle flipped up and landed on its side in a ditch. There was over $18,000 worth of damage. The vehicle was destroyed and the contact was injured. The side and front air bags failed to deploy and the driver's side seat belt failed as well. The contact has pictures. A police report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 78,213. Updated 04/23/08. The consumer also stated the seat belt did not lock into place as it should have. The seat belt harness broke which caused the consumer to fly forward.
Swerved to avoid car that had crossed over, head-on, into lane. Went up onto side (grassy area which was wet from overnight rain). Hit tree head-on at approx. 20-26 mph. Air bags failed to deploy and seat belt mechanism failed to work. Injured shoulder from seat belt & hit head on visor/windshield. Car was flat-bedded to auto body shop. Airbag sensors were crushed in collision & seat belt mechanism was fully intact. There was about $15,000-20,000 worth of damage to the vehicle. Frame was bent (bark of tree stuck in frame). Gm was notified and where not cooperative. Had to pay out-of-pocket to have truck flat bedded to a chevy dealer where gm hired a 3rd party engineer. Truck was inspected & info was downloaded from black box. Black box info and damage to car do not coincide. What the black box fails to show is the increase in speed after vehicle hit wet grass. Gm sent booklet stating that airbags should deploy between 8-14 mph in a head on collision. Bbb was notified but because I have auto insurance, they would not work with me. State of CT requires all vehicles be insured.
: the contact stated while driving 50 mph on wet roads, the vehicle collided with a roadside bank. Both frontal air bags failed to deploy, and the safety belt failed to keep the contact secure in the seat, causing the contact to be thrown over the steering wheel and strike the windshield. The contact incurred internal abdominal injuries as well as head lacerations. There was a police report taken. The vehicle was towed back to the residence, and had not been seen by a dealer.
: the contact stated while driving 20-35 mph, the vehicle violently vibrated. Total control was lost of the vehicle causing the vehicle to veer into the other lane resulting in the vehicle hitting the side of a mountain. The air bags did not deploy. Prior to this incident, popping noises were heard while turning the steering wheel to the left and right going forward and in reverse. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where the dealership determined the passenger side tie rod was broken. There was damage done to the vehicle. There was not a police report filed.
