Air Bag On-off Switch Problems of Chevrolet Avalanche

Chevrolet Avalanche owners have reported 5 problems related to air bag on-off switch (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 03/31/2010

I believe the same problem with the gm key/ignition switch is more common then what is being reported. The Avalanche 2003 has had the same loose ignition switch for years. Our key system has to be jiggled and forced to the start position 80 percent of the time. The ignition switch will also move the off position while the vehicle is moving and the key will fall out.

2 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/18/2008

Cracked dashboard on passenger side where airbag is fitted. Upper lefthand side of airbag. Traction control/stabilitrac system: service indicator warnings activate, switches from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive high even though selector is in 2wd mode. The first occurrence of this was at 70k miles, then again at 90k. Then again at 97k the transmission was damaged and needed to be replaced. Again at 101k miles the ringgear in the rear axel was destroyed. Rear axel was replaced. Fifth time for those counting, 116k miles service stabilitrac and service traction control warnings, switching from 2wd to 4wd high while moving, while parked, selector in 2wd position with someone at the wheel or cab empty. Evaporative emission control warning. Check engine light on, code comes back to eec. Indicating a leak in the return line. The first time this was replaced at 70k miles, this is the second time. And no it is not the gas cap being loose or needing replaced. The first time there was "water in the connector" (yeah sure).

3 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/09/2008

The warning for airbag malfunction /inoperative. Came on took into dealer they diagnosed it as bad module . They replaced it . 6mo later same issue the dealer diagnosed it as bad contacts . So the dealer cleaned them light went out for 6 mo. And came back on . I called dealer they said warranty ran out . But I could talk to district manager about issue . At which he told me I needed a new airbag which would cost out of pocket 3000 dollars . I answered that issue has been going on since it was under warranty and issue still not solved. His answer was then he would charge me 1500 . Year later there was a bulletin on this issue as it was the clock spring under the airbag that is the issue . Have not heard from Chevrolet since now with arcing in dash board and thnp8 control switch going out for the second time this equipment on Chevrolet vehicles danagerous.

4 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/11/2006

Key ignition switch is loose and car will shut off while operating, key can be pulled out of ignition while running. If vehicle shuts off while operating then you loose control of brakes, steering, and electrical systems. Gm is denying there is a problem. My vehicle is proof that the problem exists and the chevy Avalanche 2003 has a problem.

5 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/12/2003

Traveling at 65 mph passing another car switched land and rearend went out. Did 360 degree and hit the side on high way. Air bag did not deploy. It did $9000 in damage to the front end. Steering feels like its hitting another metal dealer has to grease the steering shaft every 25,000 miles factory defect but I have to pay for it after warranty ran out. Applying brake when making a turn if truck goes over a road hole or bump in the road anti-lock brake does not work and loose control of the truck. Suspension is not good.
