Chevrolet Cruze owners have reported 708 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Cruze based on all problems reported for the Cruze.
The engine in my 2013 chevy Cruze failed due to the head gasket, and it causes the car to overheat. Chevrolet issued a recall on some 2013 and 2014 Cruze models for head gasket problems. The gasket in these models is known to fail and that can completely destroy the motor. When a head gasket fails that allows the oil and the coolant to mix; and that will destroy the lubrication in your engine and cause the engine to fail. Pepboys repair shop-- has the repair invoice.

The failure mileage was unknown.
I have a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze and the turbocharger intercooler hose basically broke from where the end of the hose starts and a little bit down in the middle area of the end part of the hose. And this caused my engine's power to be reduced inmensly. To the point that I had my foot pressing all the way down on the accelerator and it could not go any further down, and my car was moving slower than a turtle, and this is not an exaggeration! and also, at times when I have been at a red light my car turns off. One time my car turned off while I was driving on the street with cars behind me. Luckily, I was able to pull into a shopping center. And the air conditioner is also failing because I keep putting free on so it can be colder and all that comes out is hot air. I did not know that this intercooler hose was a major part of my vehicle's function. Also, the traction light came on, when I already had it off. If Chevrolet Cruze owners do not know about this issue, they need to know. Because this issue could eventually mess up the entire motor and possible blow it out. Which we all know a new motor is very expensive.

My 2017 chevy Cruze engine failed with only 38,000 miles on it (case [xxx]). After it happened, I read that this is a known problem (see link below). I hope that gm will consider a recall on this item in order to save others from this experience. When I contacted gm and chevy about this in late August, I was hoping that gm would take full responsibility for what clearly appears to be a manufacturing defect in cylinder 1. I was deeply disappointed that it took gm so long to respond to this request, and that the compensation was no more than the cost assistance that I was offered at the dealership originally. I will never buy a gm vehicle again, and will be sure to tell my friends and family about my dissatisfaction with owning a 2017 chevy Cruze. [xxx] sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

My car keeps telling me my trunk is open then it dings constantly going back and forth from tire monitor system to the trunk open. Then everytime I turn the car off I have to wiggle the battery cable to get my car to start and my power steering keeps going out. I'm aware there are recalls. For my car but beings my check engine light is on they r refusing to fix my car. I don't understand. I thought recalls were mandatory and had to be fixed. This car barely has 85,000 miles on it. I shouldn't be having all these issues. It's all electrical it seems like. I need help.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet cruz. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the temperature gauge indicated that the engine was hot (h). Upon checking the coolant level, the contact discovered that the coolant reservoir was empty. The contact refilled the coolant reservoir; however, the failure returned, and the coolant immediately leaked out of the vehicle. The contact refilled the coolant reservoir a second time and drove to an independent mechanic. A diagnostic test was performed that showed that a cracked tube under the coolant had caused a gasket to blow, leading to the coolant leak. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

Purchased a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze on [xxx]. [xxx]. As of July 26th I paid $862 on repairs for the car to be smoking this morning on my way to work [xxx]. In total I’ve spent almost or close to $2,000 in car repairs. This purchase was for my 17 year old daughter as a graduation present and for college. She was driving and car started to run hot and cut off in a busy intersection. She was unable to take the car to north carolina. The owner blocked me and the staff haven’t been accommodating since this process. Nor will they look at the car. This has put me in a financial burden and the safety conditions this vehicle is under. And damage this could have cause my daughter. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The car starts smoking upon acceleration and the engine light comes on. It also has a lot of oil on top of the engine. I took the car to an independent dealership and he stated the engine and gaskets are bad and this is a common problem with the 2014 chevy cruz. I've been told there was a recall and read online of a recall on the engine. However, I did not see a recall when I entered the VIN number on the national database. I need for a manufacturer representative to contact me as soon as possible to make this situation right.

At just over 70k miles the engine began running rough. Diagnostic showed cylinder 1 pressure issues from cracked piston requiring engine replacement. This vehicle has had all recommend service since owning it.
I am leasing this vehicle and it continues to have warning light on staring the vehicle engine power reduced as I'm driving and holds back vehicle and also airbag restraining system light continues also to be on. This is not normal wear and tear and I read previous years had this issue as well. This is still an issue concerning of my safety. Paying for inconvenience.

My car smells like oil burning with white smoke . And the valve cover leaks and the head gasket is damaged I need help still an issue the air bag light on. This car is un safe.
I own 3 chevy Cruze, a 2012, 2013 and 2016. They all partial power down or decelerate while driving. The local chevy dealers has no recalls for this issue or any other for that matter. Please advise.
Defouw Chevrolet was negligent in performing the proper repairs per a gm service bulletin and special coverage. They refused to provide service, falsely claimed that I refused diagnostic, misdiagnosed the vehicle, replaced the wrong part, and were extremely rude and misogynistic. Additionally, they claim the issues were pre-existing while lacking any evidence. As a result, the vehicle now needs $6,400 in repairs, and neither gm nor defouw will compensate us. Additionally, we have incurred $1,000 in towing costs, among other expenses.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact continued driving the vehicle with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that there was white smoke coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that the check engine warning light had started flashing quickly, and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 169,000.
Car continues to leak coolant.
Coolant loss and overheating requiring additional coolant. Warning of possible power loss due to overheating.
Car caught on fire under hood.
Since I’ve brought the car there is always an issue with the car overheating and something with the cooling system that needs to be repaired. It happens frequently and I’ve spent more in repairs than what I paid for the car. It’s always something with the coolant system that causes it to overheat which is dangerous.
Losing coolant seems like blown head gasket.
To whom it may concern, I am writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration regarding my recent experience with my 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. It has come to my attention that there is a known issue with the piston in the engine of this model, and unfortunately, I have fallen victim to it. This issue has caused significant inconvenience and expense for me. As a loyal Chevrolet customer, I expect better quality and reliability from your vehicles. I urge you to address this matter promptly and take responsibility for the faulty piston in the engine of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. I trust that you will take appropriate action to rectify this situation and restore my confidence in your brand. Case # 9-12557961076.
Everything thing on this engine has failed. Oil and coolant leaks just keep happening now the head gasket started leaking.
The main seal.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she heard an abnormal sound emanating from the engine compartment, prompting her to pull to the shoulder of the roadway. After a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the contact observed that the coolant level was abnormally low, and an unknown fluid was leaking. The high engine temperature warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 160,000.
The engine on our 2012 chevy Cruze experienced a blown head gasket and possibly warped heads, leading to the engine overheating and making the vehicle inoperable. It is available for inspection if needed. The car was towed to a local mechanic, was pressure tested and then confirmed the diagnosis. It has not yet been inspected by anyone else. There were no warning signs prior to this happening. There were recalls for 2013 and 2014 chevy Cruze head gaskets but not model year 2012.
So yesterday night I was at walmart and I had the car idling while putting stuff in the car the interior lights dimmed and there was a rattle that came from underneath the car right after the car stalled out twice, I had interior lights on but no power to the engine just sitting and once I started driving it didn't stall out on highway, but there is a possibility of this happening at a stop sign or traffic light, but again no check engine light, wondering if you can research into this? seems to be a reoccurring situation.
While driving home on the interstate after work, I was travelling at around 65 miles per hour, with the cruise control set at that speed. In an instant I lost all engine power and began to slow down very rapidly. A quick look to the rearview mirror to ensure nothing was approaching the rear of my vehicle, I found that I could see nothing except grey and white smoke behind me from all three mirrors. I was forced to remove myself from the highway for fear of causing an accident by blinding drivers with the smoke coming from my exhaust, and I was able to use the service road to get to the next fueling station. Upon arrival, I opened the hood and found that oil had sprayed out of every available portal in the engine, it exited through the vacuum lines, pressure sensors onto my alternator, saturated my serpentine belt as well as everything else ion the engine compartment. I noticed most of the oil came from a round hole behind the oil filler cap through a busted vacuum diaphragm that had blown out instead of regulating vacuum, indicating extreme positive pressure in the crankcase. As this was my mos in the army, I am experienced with dangers and risks involved in these situations, and I will give warning that if this happens during the right traffic situations, lives will be lost as a result of the smoke screen developimg when the oil hits the catalytic convertors combined with the rapid decline in speed without warning of any kind, and when it does happen, and it will, since there are 8 million of these vehicles on the road and counting, this complaint should serve as proper and fair warning od the damgers and risks with allowing this engine to remain in use without a warning system to indicate the tiny plastic check valve has been released from its position. I was fortunate enough that I only suffered a few curse words and horns blowing and flipping me the bird, but I have to admit I was afraid for my life and someone with less driving experience will have a bad outcom.
There is a leak that is causing the coolant reservoir tank to empty every couple of days. It appears that the coolant fumes are going inside the car. It has been taken to the repair shop on several occasions and has had the coolant reservoir replaced. However, the problems persists and the coolant fumes are making me ill from inhaling them. The car was taking in to a Chevrolet dealer December 2023 for an oil change and the service technician stated my car was “fine”. I asked about any possible leaks as I have observed spots in my parking spot. He assured me there were no problems with my car, but I persisted. He printed the service log and he determined the staff who completed the oil change had in fact noticed a leak, but the guy at the desk assured me there was not a problem. A few weeks have gone by and coolant continues to leak and the fumes are getting inside the cabin of the car. They are most noticeable when use the heater or the ac and the fumes can also be observed when I exit the car.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle started running rough and then stalled. The contact stated that the check engine warning light and the stabili-trak symbol were illuminated. The contact stated that an engine over heating warning had flashed. The contact pulled off the highway and attempted to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that after several attempts the vehicle failed to restart and was towed back to the residence. The contact stated that he had observed that the vehicle was leaking coolant, and that the vehicle had previously stalled prior to the failure on the highway; however, the contact was able to restart the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was also leaking oil. The contact had researched online and related the oil leak to NHTSA campaign number: 12v288000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Check engine light, traction control light, tire pressure light came on. Message on dash reported reduced engine power, service stabilitrak, and car slowed to 16 no more than 20mph and would not go any higher.
I have a feeling their is an issue with the head gasket for many reasons, smoke is coming out of the vehicle of the hood and has a burning smell to it. I checked online and it said some 2013 and 2014 versions of the chevy Cruze have been recalled due to not long lasting head gaskets, and I see how theirs no recalls on the vehicle but it seems theirs an issue with the head gasket and its a 2014 so im assuming this vehicle is a recall. I dont want anything serious to happen to this vehicle as this is my life and I need this car to goto my job and do the things I need to do.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the door locks were opening and closing independently. The contact stated that the instrument cluster was also flashing several unknown warning lights. The contact stated that the heater and the a/c were also functioning independently. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but became a constant failure. Additionally, the contact stated that the transmission occasionally slipped out of gear, almost causing the vehicle to stall, making the steering wheel difficult to turn. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The contact replaced the 12-volt battery and the fuse box; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 177,000.
This is the second time the car will show reduced power and completely come to a slow speed without warnings. Previously gm had issues with the crude pedal and other systems related to the reduce I. Velocity. An investogation on either faulty parts is required as this is a major issue that can or could caused accidents. I had the issue looked and supposedly repair in December 2023 now the issues is back. I was driving in hope meadow road simbsbury CT and the speed reduced without warnings almost causing an accident. The repair has not even been 3 months and the car is faulty.

The turbo on the vehicle develops a crack in the exhaust side by the wastegate over time. This is a common problem as reported by forums, that seems to be a near 100% failure rate. The crack causes lost of intake boost pressure that throws a low boost code and reduces engine power significantly.
