Car Stall problems of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox - part 1

I am currently experiencing issue with my 2011 chevy Equinox. Vehicle stalled while driving, idle's rough, and sounds like a rough. My vehicle has shut down multiple times while driving.

Twice in one year the timing chain guides broke causing motor damage and the car to stall while driving on a major highway almost causing a major accident both times.

The vehicle was towed to winter Chevrolet (3750 century CT, pittsburg, CA 94565, (925) 232-0290) where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter misfired, the pistons and head gasket needed to be replaced, and there was no oil in the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 97,700.

I have had all recalls done on this car. Have had basically everything but the engine replaced. It runs like it is a semi. Stalls at stop lights. Has died twice while driving it - and would not start again even in neutral. I am afraid to drive it because it could stall out when going through an intersection. I keep the oil changed regularly. I don't know what else to do. I can not afford to replace the engine - I still owe on my car loan on this car. In all the 40 plus years I have driven cars, I have never had this much trouble with a vehicle. I can understand having to do something every once in awhile - like transmission, etc. I have spent over $3000 on different "fixes" that havn't fixed it. I am usually a Chevrolet person, but I am not going to buy a Chevrolet again.

My husband, newborn baby and I were driving on the highway when the vehicle suddenly slowed and then stalled in the middle of traffic. This occured every time my husband used the brakes. Luckily we managed to make it back home safely. The vehichle constantly needs oil and then it died for the last time about a month ago as we pulled into a family members driveway.

I have had my SUV worked on 6 different times due stalling, loosing power, cutting out,and not wanting to accelerate . They replaced the throttle body updated the computer replaced air filter, etc. Worked for 2 weeks and now is still having this problem.

The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 173,000.

This is a safety complaint. I carry my grand kids and am worried for our safety. It has not happened due to the very low mileage and am trying to be proactive. I know of many many happenings. The cars starting at ~ 5000 miles will stall out at signals & on the road. This will probably happen to me when I reach 5k miles. The car has a defective engine that gm cannot fix. I've had this vehicle for 10 months and it's been in the shop more than anything. It's already on its second engine and that was September 14th, now October 23rd it is now needing a transmission. This doesn't include the unbelievable amount of oil changes and tune ups. I've stalled in reverse and drive. The car died out while driving and is extremely loud at times. All I have for documents are my receipts. I'm disabled with children and when I thought we were buying a car we bought a lot of problems instead. Constantly trying to still find rides to dr appts and such. I'm very disappointed that a recall hasn't been done yet, after the all the complaints on said vehicle.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a failure could not determined. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer ferman Chevrolet �tampa (9751 e. Adamo drive, tampa, FL 33619) where the failure was diagnosed as a fractured timing chain and the engine had to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and case number: 8-4527816728 was opened. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Bp.

Additionally , the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic where informed that the cam shaft sensor needed to be replaced. The contact purchased and replaced the part. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and provided service request number 8-4214923931 and referred the contact to the local dealer. The failure mileage was 94,722. Ap.

Car stalled out while stopped at a stop light. Was able to restart and drive home. Was scheduled for an oil change the next day, went to drive the car and made it three houses down before it stalled out while driving. Engine light came on and would not start back up. Had it towed to a repair shop and they said it jumped time, and the timing chain broke and made a mess of the engine. Engine needs to be replaced. Failed at 73k miles. Bought the car certified used at 36k two years ago and have had it serviced regularly. Don't have money for repairs and chevy dealer won't fix. . . .

3 complaints contained within - complaint #1 - I have had multiple issues with cam shaft actuators and exhaust issues in this vehicle. This has caused my vehicle to stall in busy intersections and to also go into "limp" mode on the interstate. Going 70mph and the engine going into limp mode is dangerous. Thankfully there were alert driver around me that were able to help me get to the emergency lanes safely. There were recalls for this vehilce for some of these issues - but conveniently - my vehicle was not recalled. Three different gm/Chevrolet dealerships have worked on my vehicle and have contacted gm on my behalf - but gm has covered no fixes and I have been out over $2000 on these fixes that were covered under recalls - but not on my vehicle. 2nd complaint - I now have fuel pump issues. Again, a recall was issued in July 2016 for fuel pump issues. The recall is for the same year, make and engine as mine. . . . But my vehicle is not covered under recall. . . . . Even my vehicle will stall out while idling at intersections and again - safety issue. I have children and do not feel safe with this happening. Gm seems to not be concerned. 3rd issue - takata recall - my air bag alert light will come on - but I have not received a recall for this issue - yet again - my vehicle seems to not be on the list. Safety issue - yes. I have had an open case number with gm corporate for at least 3 years - but suggestions always seem to be on my dime. . . . Not theirs. At this point - my vehicle is a "lemon" in my eyes. . . And if me or my family get injured because of these issues. . . Well. . . . .

Purchased 2011 Equinox new in August 2011 and all maintenance has been performed either on time or ahead of schedule. First incident occurred while driving at approximately 45 mph - Equinox shuddered and stalled out. Restarted and had it checked at dealer but no engine codes could be found. About six weeks later on August 30th car cut out at a red light, restarted - car cut out when I slowed to make a turn, restarted - car cut out when I was backing into a parking spot. Called and got an appointment at the dealership. Received a call from the mechanic on August 31st telling us that the timing chain needs to be replaced at a cost of $1600. 00. My 2011 Chevrolet Equinox only has 52000 miles on it, shame on you gm - a timing chain should not need to be replaced at such low mileage and we should not have to pay since you are aware of the issue with these timing chains.

This morning (04/20/2017), while driving, the car stalled out every time I came to a complete stop at a traffic light, or when I slowed down to turn, the engine had a very rough feel with lots of vibration and then stalled.

While driving on the freeway it would shut off during low speeds. Issue happened 20+ time during one 15 minute drive. I would need to put the car in neutral to start it again, but once I slowed down it would shut off. This also happened when stopped at a light, once I pressed on the accelerator to begin moving, the vehicle would stall out, powering off and requiring me to place in neutral to start again.

Car stall many time in the middle of an intersection when you pull out from a light or stop sign due to bad intake cam solenoid. Had to restart car severial time just to get clear of the intersection. Car may then run ok for weeks and then do it again. Gm stated it is not part of there recall, even thou it has the same issues as the cars under the recall.

Vehicle stalled when engaging drive gear. Code indicates engine variable timing solenoid intake to be replaces.

I was driving the car and entering the highway on a slight right curve when the car suddenly lost acceleration and began quickly decelerating, the engine began to shake. The car went from 60mph down to about 30 mph, almost as if it had stalled or stopped working suddenly. This lasted fr several seconds, acceleration was not possible at this time. Very dangerous. Took to dealership for service but dealer could not duplicate problem. Car was at approximately 52,000 miles. I purchased it certified pre-owned only 3 weeks prior from the local chevy dealership. There was a second similar incident 3 weeks later.

The vehicle did restart, however, the failure recurred on multiple occasions. The contact also stated that while stopped at a stop sign and depressed the gas pedal, the vehicle accelerated and immediately stopped responding to the gas pedal while the contact was in the middle of an intersection. The contact stated that he continued to depress the gas pedal, the vehicle jerked and began to accelerate. The contact stated that after that incident the vehicle would no longer reverse while shifted into reverse and the vehicle would no longer shift from third to fourth gear. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 136,000. Sw.

The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle was idling extremely rough and then the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The technician diagnosed that the cam shaft actuator solenoid needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

While driving my 2011 Equinox the car seems to intermittently misfire, causing the whole car to shake. Some days the car seems to run fine, some days it runs badly. Sometimes the engine light comes on, sometimes the check stabilitrac light comes on. Sometimes the car runs fine and no light comes on. The problem seems to be getting worse and happens more frequently. In the last week the car has started to run for 3-5 seconds after shutting off the ignition. It also has begun to run very rough and almost stall , but not every time I drive it.

A three occasions I have sat a stop light with the car idling, with a rough sounding idle, the car sounding like it was going to stall. On the third occasion, it actually did stall with me needing to restart (which luckily it did) as traffic was bearing down from behind on an early morning commute. I took the car to get serviced within the next two days, with the mechanic telling me that that car was dangerously low on oil. I was shocked and surprised to hear this, as I am diligent about getting my oil changed on time. The oil was changed only 3 months prior and the mechanic said it was 3 quarts low on oil!! after hearing this, I've researched and found that this has been a major issue for people with similar year model Equinoxes. Scary as I felt helpless sitting stalled in heavy morning traffic. Lucky I wasn't hit!.

The vehicle restarted after numerous attempts. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the vehicle needed a new cam shaft sensor. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 63,996.

I was driving down the road and my 2011 chevy Equinox just stalled on me. It restarted and ran fine. A few weeks later it did the same thing. In January 2013 it stalled on me 6 times within a short period. I was able to take it to the dealer. They replaced my camshaft actuactors. Within 3 weeks of having those replaced, the car started stalling on me again. Again I took the Equinox to the dealer. This time they replaced the solenoid valves. The car has not stalled on me since that time, but it does run rough and the engine misses when I drive down the road. I believe it is only a matter of time until it begins to stall again. The cruise has actually turned off because of the engine missing. I feel the car is unsafe because you do not know when it is going to stall. I am afraid that I will be rear-ended when it stalls or it will stall when I pull out into traffic. I am afraid to take the car very far from home for fear of getting stranded. I feel this is a real safety issue.

Bought the Equinox new in April 11 for my daughter. Had it about 6 +/- months and started having problems with it. It would loose power all of a sudden and engine light would come on and steering would become extemely hard to do. Have taken it to the dealership many many times since then all for the same reasons. The vehicle stalls while driving and looses power. I have been lucky so far with no accidents. I am having to take it to the dealer again for the same reasons. Now there is a problem with the vehicle using a lot of oil. The dealership has replaced the transmission once, replaced alot of fuses and worked on the engine several times. There are still problems. I think, gm needs to do something about fixing this vehicle and all the others that are having the same problems. From what I have read on the internet, there are a lot of owners out there having the same problems. Nhtsa, how many complaints does it take to have a recall done. . . ?.

I was driving my Equinox out of a parking lot and it stalled, I restarted it, drove it up the road and was going about 30 mph and it stalled again, I turned around back to the parking lot and it happened 2 more times. I have also be getting very poor gas mileage (15-18mph). The car was towed to the dealer and they said they reset the electrical control module because it had errors on it. This has thus far resolved the car from stalling but has not improved the gas mileage.

I started my new car up to leave the garage @ work and my car stalled 4 times. I turned off the car each time and restarted the car. I wasnt sure what was happening to my car. I was going down the ramp and the car would stalled again. Finally I was at the cashier booth and the car stopped moving. Again turned off the car and restarted. It finally moved. Went to the grocery store and returned to the car and and drove away. I glanced down @ my dashboard and noted the indicator light was on. Immediately became concern and called onstar to do a diagnostic. I was told that it was engine problem and that I need to get the car to nearest service center and followed up. I drove the car down the major highway very nervously and slowly hoping that the car wouldn't stall or get rear ended to dealship. I presented the problem to the rep. He asked me if I was ever told by the dealership that a recall was done on the engine module and I told him I didn"t recieve proper notification. I purchased the car July 18, 2011. The recall was done June 13, 2011. I was shocked that Chevrolet didn't inform me prior to purchasing car. He allowed me to leave the car and offer me a loaner and would have mechanics work on car the following day. I contacted dealership and left a message as well as the customer relations dept. I recieved a call that Friday that the part was installed. I didnt feel comfortable riding this car, after that and made it known to the representative. I am requesting assistance in this matter.

I purchased a new chevy Equinox on may 13, 2011 from maritime motors in fairfield, CT it has been a nightmare from the beginning drivetrain/timing issues, bucking on acceleration and deceleration and pulsing at traffic lights and stop signs. The Equinox still occasionally clatters upon starting (after the recall was apparently fixed in summer 2011), and the vehicle also pulses at stop signs and traffic lights to the point it feels like it is going to stall and I have to remove my foot from the brake to stop the pulsing. I have had nothing from maritime motors (or general motors) in terms of support on this issue. I do not feel safe in the vehicle - I have five witnesses/passengers who have experienced my concerns. In addition, I have two friends with the same make and model (purchased from maritime motors) and are experiencing identical issues. The state of connecticut department of consumer protection has resolved four recent complaints with gm for the exact same issues.
