Not long after my last oil change, my 2011 chevy Equinox started a ticking sound upon acceleration which worsened to a loud knocking. I took it to a repair garage and told the mechanic what was happening. After hearing the engine knocking, he shut the car off and proceeded to check the oil. It was bone dry. The mechanic told me that the chevy Equinox was notorious for its oil consumption causing the engines to blow, and that he was afraid my engine was ruined & would need replaced. He put four quarts of oil in the engine & the knocking stopped. Luckily, the engine continued to run and I was still able to drive it. But the mechanic told me it was a time bomb, and that because of its oil consumption the engine could blow at any time. When I got home I researched online regarding the Equinox and was shocked to find more and more people with the same problems with their Equinox and having to replace the engines. I also read about the recall on the Equinox for its oil consumption, and that most people were having great difficulty getting gm to do repairs, denying claims and giving them "the run-around". Now I am trying to figure out how to get a different vehicle because I used all my money to buy this Equinox. I can't afford to replace an engine either. I am at a great loss being stuck with this "time bomb" that gm is responsible for but won't fix. I purchased this car used less than a year ago & it has 116,000 miles. I never received a recall notice or any papers from gm.
I bought a 2011 Equinox in may a couple of days after having the car I was hearing clicking noises took back to the dealership they told me it was just the air condition. A couple of weeks later my car started to rock back in fourth when at a light and shutting off while driving. I took it again to the dealership when they told me it was an oil consumption issue and I needed to take it to a chevy dealership. I took it in they said that I needed a timing chain filed under mu warranty and I paid the deductible. I was then told that it wasn't going to fix the issue stating I needed to bring it back after a 1000 miles and that gm would handle the problem at hand. I then took it back and behind my back they tried to call my warranty company to see if they would pay. My warranty does not cover their problem. Then was told that they would handle everything but I still would have to pay money out of pocket. It hasn't even been 90 days since I purchased this vehicle.
I've had this truck for a little over 2 years and when I first got it there was no ticking noise then made a year ago I noticed the ticking noise. I took it to a chevy dealership and was told that it was normal for the model. It began to stall so I took it back and was told that the O2 sensor was the cause . Later on that day the ticking began to get louder and then as I came to a complete stop and raised the hood oil was spraying every where. Had it towed to the shop for them to tell me that the timing chain had been slapping up against the valve cover and had cracked the cover so that's why the oil was spraying every where. He also told me that the engine in my truck was defective from the start and that chevy knows about this . So now I'm stuck trying to find a motor for a truck that I'm still paying notes on and can't drive. The fact that chevy knows about the problems with the timing chain, the cam sensor and the oil consumption and is not held accountable for the damage to our vehicles is crazy. I come from a chevy loving family and ive always owned one and but now I'm looking for something else because chevy doesn't stand behind their products anymore and yes I always change my oil on time and all of my maintenance has been done on time.
Excessive oil consumption with less than 1000 miles on this oil change I heard ticking noise from under the hood so I checked the oil to find that there was none on the dip stick, I added 3. 5 quarts. Whats so bother some for me is that there was no warning light. There was a recall on these SUV's for that vary problem but it expires at 120000 miles or 7. 5 years which ever comes first all other recalls are 120000 miles or 10 years except this one, what would have happened if I was on a long trip with the family ran completely out of oil , car dies on expressway without any warning then what. I did take it to the dealer & service was the one that told me about the 7. 5 years. This car had a comprehensive carfax report with dealer maintenance being done since the car was new. No mention of the excessive oil consumption . That was the reason that I purchased it.
Stopped at the gas station and the car would not restart. Several times the car died while on a busy highway. When I try to start the car the windshield wipers go back and forth 3 times and all power is there but engine is totally dead. Sometimes after several tries and a few hours later the car will start. I have had 4 mechanics, 3 were dealers, and nobody could tell me what was going on. . . . . And yet I was charged 3 out of 4 times. My husband spoke to 2 street mechanics and both without hesitation said it is the pcm computer. After much research and continued problems I am now ordering a new pcm and installing it myself. There is also a ticking sound which seems to baffle the mechanics. And the car consumes tons of oil. Unfortunately I am seeing that there are so many chevy Equinox owners out there having these same issues and Chevrolet is not helping. Shame on you Chevrolet!.

I purchased this car in 2014 with approx. 80,000 miles on it but was told by the sales associate that this was a great car and a great deal. This car has been nothing but problems. The car has a ticking noise and sounds like a diesel but everytime I took it in to chevy they told me this is the way chevy cars sound and that nothing was wrong with it. Finally my engine light turns on and the car will no longer turn on so I have to get it towed and they tell me the intake cam actuator solenoids went out so they replaced it. Then I continue to hear the ticking noise and the car still runs rough and loud but again they tell me nothing is wrong with the car. Once again the engine light comes on and I have to get towed back into town over two hours away for them to tell me the tranmission needs to be replaced. I contacted gm and was told this is what happens when you buy a used car. How rude! now I am no longer under the extended warranty and my car is back at chevy. They want me to pay for 4 hours of labor to take apart my engine so they can tell me what exactly is wrong with my car but did mention a problem with the timing chain. Are they crazy? these cars are a complete joke. I can not believe that gm would not recall these cars with the extensive issues that so many people are having with them. I mean seriously they should back up their products so people will continue to buy them. If you ask me im sure this car has a problem with the oil consumption which was why I heard the ticking noise and is why the car sounded so loud and heavy like a diesel. They not these cars have a major engine issue but do nothing about it. I still have several years left to pay off this car and am completely upside down. All I want is for gm to pay off this car so I can take my services elsewhere. Drove a Honda with over 200,000 miles before it gave me any type of problems. Very disappointed.
Ever since I have bought this vehicle it is a lemon. I have all the receipts as well as research that gm needs to recall this vehicle due to safety issues and everyone has the same problem as myself. From the oil consumption and still having problems and even smells like burning causing odor which is very strong, stalling issues where my car has even stopped in the middle of the highway after a new engine was put in, the engine ticking still does and stalling even with new engine put in have video of the sounds it makes that they can't seem to figure out what's going on after all this time and the clattering noise when the car is started. I have contacted gm numerous times because I do not feel safe with me nor my children in this car. With all the complaints online and they still won't recall the vehicle and be concerned for the safety of the customer. I have all my receipts as well as all the research I have done and even the dealer keeps giving me the run around with everything wrong with it and says it's something different all the time just to try and get more money and still having to take it in the shop but this time was told OH it's not safe to drive but yet tried to say it was the tires this time which it wasn't because there is brand new tires on it. So I hate driving this car even to work let alone with my children because I don't know when it will stop again and cause me to wreck or get hit or even the fumes causing problems which they don't need to inhale. Gm needs to recall this vehicle because of all the issues I have had and still continue to have and provide me with a safer vehicle. I have already filed with the bbb and will be speaking with state attorney general as well. If need proof of receipts I can fax those.
While driving on a major highway with an 18 wheeler behind me, the vehicle stopped going forward when I pushed on the gas. It was still running but had no power and began to slow down to nothing. I was able to coast to the side of the road, but was almost run over due to the sudden loss of power. I cut off the vehicle and tried to restart it, but it would only make a clicking sound. According to the dealership we towed it to, the timing chain slipped and ruined the motor. This is a 2011 vehicle with only 73000 miles on it. This should not have happened and since we made our final payment last month, none of it is under warranty. Surely this is not typical of this vehicle and the Chevrolet company can stand behind this repair.
I was driving around 50 mph down a rural road when a message suddenly appeared saying no oil pressure, stop engine. I continued about a half mile to stop sign and engine quit as I was braking. Would not re-start. I was stranded on the roadside. Upon checking reason for no oil pressure I determined there was no oil in the engine, no visible leaks or drips on undercarriage of vehicle. Engine apparently had ceased up. Oil change indicator was at 44%, what happened to the oil. There were no oil spots on my garage floor. No low oil indicator light appeared on the dash panel prior to the stop engine warning. There was no knocking or lifter ticking sounds coming from the engine prior to indicate there was a low oil issue. 3. 0 l v6.
Concerning 2011 chevy Equinox 4cyl, on startup, there will be a loud knocking noise, sounds as if there is no oil in the engine, sound lasts from 1-5 seconds then goes away. Most of the times it will do it on first start-up of the day but there have been a few times where it has done it multiple times in the same day. Car has been in the shop 4 times for the same issue, they have replaced the cam actuator and solenoid, which I had to bring back again (#5) because the gasket was seated incorrectly and was leaking oil on my driveway. Service account manager has heard the noise the first time I bought it in and the last time it was in, both times the sound lasted about 1 second, but it was enough that both of us heard it, not as long as the times when starting at home, probably because those were on first start-up of the day whereas the times at the dealership it was either already running or was started a few times that day. They also replaced a high pressure pump insulator cover for a ticking noise that had nothing to do with the knocking noise. Also have mentioned to them that while accelerating (from dead stop at traffic light, going up on-ramps to highways and merging into high-speed traffic), the rpm's will drop down to zero and car almost stalls then it kicks back into gear (up to 6500 rpms), this has happened at least 5 times, and they couldn't duplicate that problem either. I have tried all 3 grades of gasoline and issues were present with all 3. At this point it has already been in 4 times for the same issue and I feel as though one day the engine will have more serious issues because of these issues.
