Engine Burning Oil problems of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox - part 1

I have had constant high oil consumption, have had to replace vvt solenoids twice, timing and balance shaft chains had to be replaced, engine misfiring. Can barely go 2 months without any issues. Always something wrong. I've looked this up and many people have had similar issues with this engine.

Excessive oil use. Burns 1 quart of oil per week. Requires 1 quart of oil every 300 miles. This is getting insanely expensive and annoying. No low oil light comes on but a check engine light does. I never let the engine start to knock before adding oil, but there is a serious problem here. And it sounds like lots of other people have reported the same issue. Gm needs to seriously look into this before they get sued drastically.

2011 Equinox has excessive oil consumption and is getting worse. This vehicle has a recall that is vague which is to say it is a popular issue with no direct resolution.

Engine failure due to excessive oil consumption. Timing chain failure causing major damage to engine, fuel pump failure, catalytic converter failure due to excessive oil consumption .

Excessive oil consumption, oil engine light does not alert when oil is low. Just checked oil dipstick is bare and I have 3000 miles to go before next oil change. Low oil alert does not alert to the issue this has happened twice since October 2020. It was only by chance that this was found, no warning signs that the vehicle was low on oil. Last oil change toom to dealership for oil change and it was stated the oil level didn't register on dipstick.

It burning so much engine oil and running out from oil for under 900 miles and car is under 120000.

My 2011 chevy Equinox ran out of oil in between regular oil changes due to the oil consumption issue with the incorrect sized piston rings. This escalated quickly and destroyed my timing chain which destroyed my engine.

My Equinox suffers from the oil consumption defect which causes the vehicle to consume oil at an usually high rate. Although several features of the vehicles� engines contribute to the oil consumption defect, the primary cause is faulty piston rings. This is a common problem with these vehicles and their was even a lawsuit that was recently settled. I however do not qualify for the free repair because I purchased the vehicle later may 16, 2019. I believe this problem should be a recall since gm is aware of the faulty engineering that went into the manufacturing of this vehicle.

This car is internally burning excessive amounts of oil in between oil changes. I have no external oil leaks. I am added at minimum 5 quarts between oil changes, other parts are begining to foul because of this issues, the oil light does not even come on to let me know if it low on oil. I am a windowed woman and this is not right. This needs to be fixed. I do what I am suppose to do and take very good care of this car, however this is out of my control and apparently is a huge issues. Wish I would have known this, I would never have purchased it to begin with. Chevy needs to make this right!.

Burns oil excessively, 1 quart per 10 days. No leaks . Costly repairs, and maintenance.

I started having issues after a couple months of buying my vehicle. My rpm would sputter and I would always check my oil and it would be a quart low. This went on for months and I continued to drain money into my vehicle with buying oil. I replaced seals thinking it was a oil leak and it wasn't it. My engine finally was just shot so now I'm out of a car and owe money on it still and don't have the money to repair my vehicle. I am very upset with this model of vehicle bc I did research on it and a lot of compliants on this car burning oil. Crazy that no one is doing anything to fix the issue. I guess chevy is crap now and just want to loose customers. I won't be buying a chevy again and will not recommend.

Oil consumption high, metal particles in oil, cv axel joint bad.

Burns oil really bad and today engine light came on checked the oil and nothing. No check oil no sound no nothing. Car stalled out.

The vehicle is burning oil faster than normal, causing the vehicle to stall out randomly.

The 2. 4l engine my wife was driving before the date listed, the car stalled on twice on interstate 69 she had to move to the right side of the interstate to restart the car. This was due to the oil consumption in car. She did not feel safe in that car at all. Attach wil be the bill of the engine repair due to the oil consumption.

Most recently was driving in heavy rain and the windshield wipers just stopped working in the upright position, and visibility was extremely impaired. Had my granddaughter with me, they had to roll down windows to help me get safely off the road. This vehicle has had problems with the fuel system in 2015, air conditioner quit working in 2014, failed oil consumption test in 2016. I bough a new car because in didn't want mechanical problems and this vehicle has had nothing but problem after problem. It is a lemon.

Oil consumption.

Noticing excessive engine oil consumpion with out warning from the car's computer. The car does start to have operating issues and will chug and turn it self off if the oil does run low before I can catch it. The only system notification for this is a check engine light. No oil notifications appear.

Encountered an issue where the car would randomly shut the engine off without any type of light or warning. This happened for the first time a week before we could get it to the shop, in that week it happened 8 times. One of these times was while moving and my wife were nearly t-boned on a highly congested road. My wife began getting extremely anxious when she had to drive the car and scared it would die on the interstate. The chevy dealership said this was being caused by high oil consumption, this was news to us because the car had not notified us of that at all (no oil or check engine lights) and we were at about 3k since last oil change with full synthetic (70k total miles). The dealership then went on to say that the piston rings and pistons need to be replaced for $4,200. I googled �2011 chevy Equinox piston rings� and one of the first results was �special coverage adjustment 15285d� for excessive oil consumption caused by the pistons and rings. I asked the dealership why he never mentioned this and he said it didn't apply to our VIN but he didn't know why. After a back and forth of �that makes no sense, it's the exact issue� and �I don't know it's above my pay grade� he eventually said �based on the VIN your car wasn't built with the same parts� which I realized after calling the gm customer service line directly was a lie. Gm told me that my car was covered until November, 2018 (this happened July 19) because gm did the service adjustment out to 7 yrs/120k miles. Gm told me she is up-channeling our case to see if gm will pay for some of it, still waiting to hear back.

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. Upon purchasing the vehicle, the contact stated that it burned excessive oil without warning. The contact received an unknown recall notice regarding the oil consumption and took the vehicle to joe holland Chevrolet & imports (210 maccorkle Ave sw, south charleston, wv 25303). The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired per the recall by the previous owner. Due to the oil failure, the head gasket blew out in the engine. The independent dealer that sold the contact the vehicle agreed to replace the engine for $3,000. After the engine was replaced, the failure continued without warning. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The engine is burning oil frequently and has metal shavings in oil.

I took my 2011 Chevrolet Equinox to the dealership for an oil change. They told me that they wanted to do the oil consumption test because my car was burning too much oil. They told me it was a known issue with this engine and I would most likely qualify for repairs to be done after this test was completed. I had the oil consumption test started and went back every 1,000 or less miles and was told this issue would be covered and everything would be fixed. I followed up every 1,000miles or less. When I went back on December 3, 2018, my car had 71,392 miles on it and had my oil changed. I went back on March 14, 2019, with 73,996 miles on my car, a difference of 2,600 miles, to have my oil changed from December 3, 2017, they told me that my car didn't sound right and they will check into it. I waited to see what this issue was and they the service guy told me he had bad news and my engine was ruined due to the timing chain breaking and ruining my engine. Guy CA car a1,000 miles to have my oil changed and then I was told there was no oil consumption issue so nothing further needed to be done and to come back within 3,000 miles and have the oil changed. I went back on March 14, 2018 at 2,600 miles and was told my timing chain broke and my engine was ruined. Told me they can fix it for $8,000. How would it go from there is definitely an issue with the oil consumption and than no issue at all. I took very good care of my car. It looks almost brand new! how can gm not care that these engines are bad! gm knows this is a big problem and are making every excuse not to fix this. I could have broke down on a highway and caused an accident! how is it possible that gm can't be held accountable! please let me know if you need more information. Thank you.

I have experienced over excessive use of oil, on both street and highway driving, while in motion, my car started to choke itself out when I would stop at a stop sign/light. Over the past 3 years of owning this chevy 2011 Equinox, I have had excessive oil usage. The oil usage was so extensive that I was having to put a quart of oil every 500 miles or less. . . . . . . All of this excessive oil burning has to exhaust somewhere, I reached out to my local mechanic shop and asked them to see what they could find out for me, and they returned with a oil consumption test paper to fill out. I had been doing this oil consumption test when my exhaust started to clog causing my rear engine seal to blow, and leak every bit of oil out of my motor, all of this resulted from the excessive oil consumption over the past years, causing my Cadillac converter to become clogged, therefore, causing the pressure of the emissions, that was not able to be exhausted out, to cause my rear engine seal to blow. My vehicle had to be towed to a shop. These problems have occured while the vehicle was in motion until my rear engine seal busted, causing my vehicle to be unmovable without assistance from a tow truck.

The engine oil has been burning excessively having to put oil in it a week after oil change the engine now has died.

Excessive oil consumption, manufacturer won't honor warranty because it expired 4 months ago, despite mileage being half to requirement. We were not notified of the warranty or it's expiration.

I own 2011 chevy Equinox. Only has 80,000 miles. First occurrence started as I was driving on the freeway and the vehicle stalled on me couple of times as I was driving or at stop sign. Malfunction engine sensor light turned on. Took it to two different people to look at it for an estimate, since taking it to the dealership will cost an arm and a leg, both said timing chain problem and I would need to get a new motor! also excessive oil consumption yet no sensor turns on. Checked to see if there were any recalls but only see hundreds of complaints with the same problem!.

Oil consumption issue, car uses so much oil in between oil changes and doesn't alert you when it's low.

Windshield wiper motor link breaks whenever I use my wipers and then I need to replace. Has happened multiple times. Excessive oil consumption. Oil is empty after no more then 2000 miles. Need to add 4 quarts to refill. No leaks.

I brought the car in for excessive oil consumption it now needs a motor I just got it 7 months ago from dealer. No warranty. Engine seized.

The chevy customer care rep stated that there is a "special coverage 15285 is tied to your VIN, which may or may not be related to the oil consumption concerns you've described. " my vehicle is experiencing significant oil consumption issues and plenty of noise from the engine. I never received any information about this issue despite having a registered mychevrolet account and a history of contact with chevy. My mechanic mentioned a known issue with oil consumption and suggested I look into it which brought me to this point. After contacting chevy, they suggested I pay to get a diagnostic but that I would not be covered for any services despite the known issue and that I never received notification of the issue.

My engine blew due to excessive oil consumption from bad o rings on the pistons.

While driving and I come to a stop, , the engine will turn off by itself and I am not able to accelerate. I have to turn turn off the car and restart it in order for it to run again. There was no warning that the car had turned off. I had this problem about 7 months ago, and brought it to the dealership service center. They replaced both intake and exhaust cam solenoid and also the excess oil consumption recall on the car. The car was running fine until now, started to have the same issue again.

Excessive oil consumption . . . Vehicle has 88,000 miles on it. Local dealership and GMC won't fix. They say bulletin for repairs is expired. We did not receive notice GMC would repair and we've had vehicle in for oil changes three times in the last twelve months.

I have to continuously put quarts of oil in to make sure it doesn't run dry. It's been a constant issue with mechanics I've taken it to at the dealership saying they've seen every Equinox they worked on have a problem with the engines burning through oil.
