This 2011 chevy Equinox is part of a class action lawsuit (ellen berman, et al. V. General motors llc - case no. 2:18-cv-14371). Gm knew about the excessive oil consumption and the lack of oil gauges, resulting in piston wear and failure, causing engines to seize, yet continued to manufacture them as is for years afterward. Had to have engine rebuilt, costing almost $4,000. Received denial of any reimbursement from analytics consulting llc, who is the settlement administrator. Vehicle is not worth selling to anyone, nor would I, in good conscience, put this rust bucket out there for someone else to have to deal with the oil issue. (continues to leak). Got upside-down on loan. . . Had to use tax refund to pay it off. Would really like to be reimbursed for the engine repair and labor costs. It's the right thing for general motors to do. Will never purchase another gm product! I am speaking on behalf of my young daughter, to whom this happened. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.
I had the oil consumption test done at thomas Chevrolet in media, pennsylvania due to oil being low. Followed up every 1,000 miles and the oil was always 1/2 qt or more low. On December 3, 2018, I had my oil changed and they said there was no issues with the oil. The mileage was 71,392. I brought it back for an oil changed on March 14, 2019 with the mileage being 73,996, which is only 2,604 miles later. The service advisor told me that my engine was destroyed. The timing chain broke and destroyed my engine! how does an oil consumption issue go from you have and issue with your car burning oil to no there are no issues with oil consumption???? I could have broken down on a highway with this issue! they told me there was nothing they could do but replace the engine for $8,000. 00 but no guarantees! I couldn't afford to pay $8,000 so I had my car towed to my house where it has been sitting ever since. How can gmget away with this? even the generalmanager told me that gm know about this issue and won't fix it!.
Excessive oil consumption- my 2011 Equinox has excessive oil consumption (and it looks like majority of them do!) chevy issued a statement about this but it is no longer fixable and, unfortunately, these vehicles are still on the road. I bought one that is now dead because of this issue. It started to shake as I got to a stop sign and when I went to the shop, the same day, it was completely out of oil. I keep regular oil changes on my vehicle and my dad owns a body shop so it was well taken care of. There was no reason for the oil to be gone except for a flaw in the vehicle. I'm extremely upset that this wasn't a full recall from chevy, that was the right thing to do. Instead I'm out a vehicle because I can no longer submit paperwork to get the fix reimbursed and the dealership would need to rebuild or replace the entire motor to get it working again.
The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox I own started to idle really high then really low and made the car speed up and then the idle speed would drop to a point where the engine would die. You would have no pedal control at all just rolling along on a city street. It happened out of the blue and was very scary in busy traffic. I brought the car to the Chevrolet dealership and was informed that they had special coverages on the vehicle that I was never notified about. (even though I owned the car at the time the special coverages were released). The dealership told me that Chevrolet was well aware that this car has a problem with excessive oil consumption. (I already new that with oil changes and having to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles). The dealership also informed me that Chevrolet, new that the timing chain on this vehicle would break and be very dangerous to the engine. The dealership said they would also fix that on special coverages. I told them to go ahead and fix these two issues. They took the engine apart, and informed me that because of these 2 issues that gm and Chevrolet were well aware of, it had scoring in my cylinders. The vehicle was extremely dangerous to be driving because it would idle out of control and shut itself off out of nowhere. The dealership was confident that the scoring on the cylinders was a direct result of the two issues that were covered under the special coverages. I was never notified of any of these special coverages from gm or Chevrolet. Chevrolet customer service told me they had my address correct but could not confirm that the notices were sent to me for the special coverages. My family and I were in danger driving this vehicle, and Chevrolet new all about the dangers in driving this vehicle. I now have a car sitting at the dealership with a blown engine and Chevrolet won't do anything for me. There should have been recalls.
Engine failed due to excessive oil consumption. I was in the process of working through an oil consumption test with the dealership but was unable to finish. My car failed thankfully while it was stationary in my driveway. It is my understanding that this failure could have happened at any time even with my kids in the car or on the highway. I've been told that due to the vehicle consuming excessive oil between regular oil changes it results in issues with the timing chain which eventually lead to engine issues and ultimately failure. There is currently a technical service bulletin released by gm for the known issue but no information was even sent to me about the issue so that I could be made aware of it and monitor the problem.
Had to replace the catalytic converter due to over heating of the engine/exhaust as a result of the excessive oil consumption (sept 2017). Stabilitrak service light came on and reduction of engine power and speed while driving (Jan 2018).
In 2014 failed oil consumption test got work done on engine replacing piston and etc now I had (1/2018 ) vehicle shutting off at stop signs or lights . Took vechicle to personal mechanic it was down a quart or oil but wasn't due for another oil change till 109. 000 miles . Car was at 106,000 miles at this time. Was told that I needed an upper fuel pump, cam shaft , timing chain set. And plugs misfired. After calling GMC I was told that I had no warranties left. So I called the chevy certified dealer who perform the engine work in 2014 . I was told that their warranty only last for a year and that I have special coverage still left that may aplly but would have to be inspected by their specialist and $100 fee. Now mind you my car was already being worked on at my private mechanic . After paying $1375. 00 for all the issues listed above my catalyst converter is bad. I been having ongoing engine issues with this vechicle.
Oil consumption.
Gm recall 11195a - poor drivability/ safety/ emissions recall for camshaft position actuator solenoids. My 2. 4l 2011 Equinox (approx. 47,000 at purchase 11/16 & 71,000 current) is now at days Chevrolet in acworth GA. Due to 1) shutting off multiple times while driving, 2) stalling at idle (fwd & rev). I initially visited days on 12/22/17 to start an oil consumption test related to 15285c, as my car presented with stalling/hesitation/surging and loss of 3 qts oil. As of today (1/3/18), I returned to days when it shut off while driving again. The dealership's diagnosis is intake & exhaust camshaft solenoid failure. I suspected this based on code p0010 recorded by my diagnostic unit. So I got a rental, left my car for the camshaft repairs, and researched recalls. The 2011 2. 4l has many known engine/powertrain/safety issues. Lo and behold, I found the recall on the camshaft diagnosis. It reads exact to what I'm experiencing. My next step was contacting days to ask why I'm being charged for a recalled repair. I was informed that they were unaware of recall 11195a. My service advisor, rob, looked up the recall and discovered that there is in fact a recall for the exact diagnosis, yet could not explain why my VIN is not included. He advised that the car is exhibiting exactly what the recall is issued for and that it's clearly a known safety issue, yet gm will not cover my repair because "the VIN is not included". I very much believe this is gm's responsibility and gm should cover the repair at no cost because it's a result of their faulty engineering. I contacted gm customer service tonight and was told there's nothing gm can do. I strongly disagree. Gm can do the right thing. I requested a case be opened and was given #83734190593 after pressing (paul) for one. In the end. Gm was of no help and my VIN is still in limbo, so I'm filing my complaint here.
Oil consumption - have just received the warning oil pressure low - stop engine. Come to find out it is only covered before 120,000 miles or by September of this year. I received no notification of this issue. I have documented all service charges and timing of additional oil used. Talked with gm and they will not offer to reimburse for charges incurred.
Engine oil is burning by passing through and going out the exhaust.
The vehicle was parked and I went to start it and it wouldn't start, so I got it towed to the garage. They found a lot of noise coming from the engine so they checked the compression and found 0 psi on all cylinders. They found the valves bent and top of pistons smashed. Excessive engine oil consumption due to piston ring wear caused the engine to fail.
I have a 2011 Equinox it's got 146,000 miles . I am faithful with oil changes and last week when I went to get it changed I was told my engine had no oil. My oil light never came on, my check engine light had just turned on the day prior. I was told there wasn't any leaks. So after some research I find there is a oil consumption problem, however since my miles are I've 120,000 I don't qualify for the repair. This is not right! my car could have burnt up because my light never indicated a problem and gm never notified me of he issues!.
Motor on 2011 chevy Equinox blew up. Dealer stated that when they pulled the oil pan they found piston, rod and rings. Quoted it would be >$9,000 to repair for the motor, gaskets and cat. Convertor. Asked if this would be covered under warranty. Stated it wasn't. I questioned about the pistons being replaced last year. He stated that it was 1. 5yr and 27,000 miles ago. He said that there was no coverage. I asked why would these go bag with only 27,000 miles on the repair on only 116,000 miles on the vehicle. He said due to oil. The dealer has completed all oil changes the last 2-3 years as least after starting to have all the issues with oil consumption and other problems. All oil changes have been completed based on oil usage prompted by car. It seems that the issue is caused by the oil consumption and has just taken time for the rods/crank to give way. Chevy should issue recall for replacement of whole engine not just the pistons. If pistons are faulty due to lack of oil there are more issues underlying.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that there was excessive oil consumption and the oil level warning indicator failed to illuminate. The contact stated that there were no leaks or other evidence of an oil leak. The contact also stated that there was no smoke coming from the tailpipe. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. The VIN was not available.
I received a recall notice for excess oil consumption. I surpass parimeters for repair. Dealer insists that I keep going in for testing well beyond what chevy has set as the standard. Chevy is not providing results. Vehicle is still not fixed. Vehicle whines and has loss of power. First time it happened I ,thankful, was on a quiet residential street. The recall states oil consumption of a quart or more at 2000 miles. I have been going in every 1000 miles. I have attached a copy of the dealer record of oil levels. I am going on the 4000 mile mark with no fix by chevy in future. They don't want to fix.
2011 Chevrolet Equinox. Consumer writes in regards to oil consumption issue. The consumer stated the manufacturer was notified, but declined assistance due to the vehicle having multiple owners.
Safety concerns galore with this model year, which is well documented on the internet. Oil consumption issue, transmission needed to be replaced and car stalling issuing since I have owned vehicle. Driving on highway and car completely lost power due to the oil consumption issue with entire family in car, very dangerous. New engine problem caused car to stall in road as well. There are systemic problems that gm doesn't want to acknowledge and it has been extremely frustrating to own vehicle. Someone is going to get seriously injured during this car. Called and shared safety concern with gm and dealership several times.
Takata recall my husband and I purchased a vehicle from cornerstone Chevrolet in monticello, mn in March of 2015. In August of 2015, my husband received a letter from gm stating that some of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles equipped with the 2. 4l engine has an issue with excessive oil consumption. We were informed in the letter that we were not to bring the vehicle in unless we believed this issue was happening. About a 3 weeks ago, our mechanic who performs our oil changes notified us that our vehicle was using excessive oil and that we should bring it into a gm certified dealership to have it looked at. On Friday, October 28th 2016, we brought our vehicle to cornerstone Chevrolet in monticello, they informed us that this particular issue was happening with the vehicle and they were going to get the approval to start working on it. We were called later that day to be told that the gm rep needed us to bring in receipts of our oil changes in order for us to get this issue fixed. We obtained our records and brought them in. The gm rep then told the techs at cornerstone that they were unable to fix the recall because they only allow 7,500 miles in-between oil changes and that we could find this in our owner¿s manual. I read the owner¿s manual from cover to cover and found no information regarding this potential guideline. I notified and sent pictures of the information I did find within the owner¿s manual regarding the oil changes and they passed this onto the gm rep. As of Monday, November 7th, 2016 I am being told by gm that because we are the second owners of this vehicle and not because of the oil change records. We just want our vehicle fixed because we deserve to have it fixed when this is a known gm issue, not an issue of lack of maintenance.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving various speeds, the vehicle shut down without warning. The vehicle was able to restart. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to bob bell Chevrolet of bel air (443-692-2111, located at 1230 bel air rd, bel air, MD 21014) where the technician recommended an oil consumption test. The contact stated that the test was not completed. The contact also stated that an unknown recall was performed one year ago regarding high oil consumption. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was referred to the epa. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. While operating the vehicle, the odor of fuel and oil were present inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the pistons would need to be replaced and the vehicle experienced an oil consumption failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Excessive oil consumption. 1qt per 1,250 miles. Needs major engine repairs at less than 86,000 miles. I've heard that if allowed to continue that engine can stall while driving. This could be a dangerous condition if stalling while travelling at maximum highway speeds. Driver could lose steering control.
The headrests on this car push my head so far forward that I have terrible pain while driving. I also cannot see where I am going due to the extreme angle of my head jutting forward. Not too safe--any reasonable person can figure this out. In addition, the car is burning excessive oil. Also, when trying to accelerate after slowing down in heavy traffic, it bogs. Again, not very safe. This car is a piece of crap--never again will I get a Chevrolet. This happens all the time!!.
Chevrolet released this car with a bad engine from the beginning. I literally have to change the oil on my car ever single week. " excessive oil consumption " is what they say & only has a warranty up to 120k. When my car started acting out, I was at 126k. It drives very sluggish and horrible, like my engine will give out at any moment. Someone really needs to issue a recall, because this affects all ( or close to) 2010 - 2011 GMC terrain & Chevrolet Equinox & I just so happen to have an 11' Equinox. I don't want to lose my car over a classic Chevrolet screw up!!!.
Had my car fixed for the oil consumption issue and a week later I lost power and the car shut off while driving almost causing an accident with my children in the car. Dealership denied any thing wrong with the car. . . . After having it towed back to them, they found the throttle body connectors were no good and need a new wiring kit to fix. There needs to be a recall on this because this could cause a serious accident, almost happened to me! please recall the 2011 Equinox as a whole, you obviously didn't build this car correctly.
I received a letter from gm/Chevrolet in August 2015 regarding oil consumption issues in my 2011 Chevrolet Equinox (service bulletin no. : sb-15285). I am currently having this issue monitored for this as I was told I would have to have bring it to the dealership every 1,000 miles for monitoring before they would do anything about this. In the meantime I have gotten a check engine code p0420 which relates to the catalytic converter. My Equinox has just at 84,500 miles on it and the catalytic converter warranty is only 80,000. I took it in to the dealer this morning and was told the converter needed replacing. After speaking with multiple dealerships and mechanics I understand and have been told multiple times that the oil consumption and piston issues have caused this problem yet gm/Chevrolet is telling me they will only help me approximately $200 to help with the new converter. They must know this is what's caused this issue as it appears that a lot the 2010 Equinox had the exact same issue and problems. I would really like for gm/Chevrolet to fix the converter on my Equinox at 100% their cost as it has had multiple other issues including transmission (covered under a bulletin listed on your site here) , camshaft actuator (covered under a bulletin listed on your site here), etc. The converter per quotes are anywhere from $600-$1,200 which is a lot of money for an issue that was caused by the oil consumption issue they know about, but have to monitor first before they will fix it.
We have owned a 2011 since 2014 and in the beginning of 2015 we began to experience the excessive oil consumption. We have taken it to a chevy dealer multiple times and have been told that there is nothing wrong. We have to change our oil between 1, 000 and 2,000 miles and constantly carrying around oil "just in case". In August, 2017, we started to experiencing the stalling at stop signs and red lights, and even while driving. When idling, the car "bounces".
Discovered vehicle using around 2 quarts of oil in between oil changes. It was 200 miles short of next oil change. Added the oil, drove approx. 500 miles and it was 1/2 qt. Short. Gm says normal to use 1 quart in between. This is crazy. We have began the oil consumption test with photos documenting. When we had the oil changed at a dealer the oil was way overfilled.
Oil consumption issue with this ecotec 2. 4l engine. Consuming at least a quart of oil a week due to faulty piston rings.
I was driving and all of a sudden , the check engine light came on and "reduced engine power" message appeared. You are at highway speed and suddenly you can only go 30 miles an hour no matter how much accelerator is depressed. After pulling over at the first available safe area, turning off the car and restarting seemed to reset the car so it was able to proceed. This continued to happen until I attempted to clean the throttle body. The throttle body wasn't operating correctly. Cleaning it did stop the "reduced engine power" message. This car also burns oil, no leaks, but you need a quart or two of dexos oil a month. Gm seems to think this is normal. Also the car stalls as you reduce speed, like coming to a traffic light. It works fine for awhile, but on certain days, it stalls every time you slow down. The check engine light points to a gas pedal switch.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle decelerated and all the warning lights on the instrument panel illuminated. The contact discovered that oil dissipated rapidly. The dealer diagnosed that an oil consumption test needed to be done and was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000.
I was driving back from work back in January 2013 and I stopped my car at the traffic light. When the light turned green, I began to drive again, but the engine shut off. Restarted the engine, stopped at the next traffic light, and the engine stopped again when I tried to drive after the light turned. This happened three times. I took to the dealership and they performed a diagnosis and could not find anything, but recommended me to do the fuel induction and fuel injection service because of the carbon built up. I questioned them why the carbon built up so quickly (25k miles) for this car while the other cars I had owned do not have the carbon built up until much later time and mileage. The deal told me that it is normal for the carbon built up that early. I end up have the oil changed and left the dealer. Since 5/27/13, the same problem occurred again. After it occurred at least once every week for three weeks, I took it to another dealer. After diagnosis, a code of p0011 intake camshaft position performance: found oil level (the print out was cut short). I was told the engine oil was 2&1/2 quarts short, but could not find any leaking. I asked if it might be an internal oil combustion, and was advised to change the oil, come back after 1000 miles to perform oil consumption test. I questioned the service rep why the engine oil is so low after 5 month and 6k miles. He said that it is normal. I agreed to change the oil and do the oil consumption test. I called the gm customer service for advise, she talked with me and the service rep in the dealship, and advised me to wait after the 1000 mile test. I am nervous because this is a repeated problem. I need the car to go to work everyday and the engine might stop again and an accident may happen, int the mean time, all I can do is taking the risk and hope nothing dangerous will happen.
These vehicles need to be recalled by gm - they have a serious engine defect which cause excessive oil consumption and dangerous performance of the vehicle. The vehicle will stall at any given time or not respond so pulling out into traffic is extremely dangerous. They are in the process of replacing my engine however after much research in most cases this does not fix the problem. I am fortunate to have a dealer that is responsive to my complaints - however that is not the case for most. There are people out there fighting to have the situation resolved but have made no progress. I requested gm terminate my lease as I will not place my children in this vehicle any longer, they refused. I have a light at the end of my tunnel as I leased, but so many people who purchased these vehicles do not as the problem is so well know and documented they are unable to trade them in at a decent value. It is a sin that they are not forced to recall these unsafe vehicles. I am assuming they are waiting for a fatality. I have been denied that ability to speak with a district manager at gm as the resolution provided by the lower level employees was not acceptable. At this point I am not sure where to turn. I will be placing the vehicle in my garage once the engine is replaced and buying another vehicle as to not endanger myself or others.
Purchased this 2011 Equinox lt 4 cy on 4/25/2011. After a few months it started hesitating and stalling and a check engine code p0011. So on 7/15/2011 I took it to the dealer and they replaced the intake cam solenoid and oil. Seemed better but still hesitated once in a while so I brought back on 9/27/2011 and the dealer said they could not duplicate. We lived with the hesitation until 2/11/2013 when it starting running bad and stalled a couple times and the check engine light came on with a p0011 code again. This time I took it to another dealership because it was closer and they test both actuator solenoids and at the time of the test they where both working. They checked the debris screens and there was no debris to affect the operation of the actuator. So with no other information about the problem they said the oil was dirty, even though the oil had less than 2500 miles and the computer life oil sensor said I was at 64%. And they stated that the oil did not read on the dip stick. My SUV with 24k miles and less than 2500 miles on since a oil change had burned over a quart and a half of oil.
