1 Mechanical Jack problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/05/2010

Owner was trying to replace his right front tire at the time of the collapse. His car was on a flat surface and he installed the jack according to the instructions. Upon raising the car the jack bent allowing the car to shift and fall down. When taken to the dealer for a replacement, they claimed it was not used properly. After talking with several people claiming this was a safety issue, the dealer agreed to supply a new one only if the failed jack was given to them he declined and is willing to send it to NHTSA for inspection. Owner feels this is clearly a safety issue and should not have happened on a new car. Updated evoq 03/18/11 updated 4/25/11.

Failure Date: 03/30/2007

- the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Impala LS. On 03/30/07 while driving 55 mph on a clear, dry day the front passengers side tire blew out. They were able to pull to side of the road, and raised the vehicle to change the tire. They were able to put the spare tire on the vehicle, and were in the process of putting on the lugs nuts when the vehicle dropped from the jack, and snapped the jack on both ends. When the vehicle fell, the tire well hit the driver on the head and shoulder causing injury. The spare tire came off and knocked the driver forward. The front passengers side rotor fell onto the pavement. She had to call 911 for police assistance. The state trooper raised the vehicle with his jack and was able to change the tire for the contact. The trooper looked at the jack, and believed it to be defective. The contact has the trooper's information available if the NHTSA investigators need to contact him. The contact filed a complaint with gm, and she was given case# 71-506141092. The current mileage was 52,507 miles.
