Takata recall I was driving my car and all of a sudden steering wheel jumped up and then lost the power steering and could barely turn wheel and I heard a ding and it tried to die and a burst of steam comes on windshield. It will smell like it's really hot and it gets a little hot but not bad.
Lost power steering on acceleration onto highway several times over the last 2 weeks. Could not steer untill it reset at speeds of 50+ mph.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power steering and the steering wheel locked up. There were no warning indicators illuminated before the failure. The vehicle was driven to ourisman Chevrolet of baltimore (6633 security blvd, woodlawn, MD 21207) and the contact was informed that she would have to pay to have it diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In 2014, the vehicle was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was 105,181.
There is a problem with the power steering in the car. It was recalled in 2015 because the power steering could stop working at any time. I took the car in in 2015 and was told it was fixed. Now recently the car loses its power steering when starting the car. The car has been stationary and I know enough not to drive it, but it has happened a few times now over the past two days, where the power steering is enabled. This is the same problem that was recalled in 2015 under safety recall number 14772. What is the next step to get this fixed again because this is a safety concern and a known issue that is now reoccurring and should be covered under this recall still.
I have owned this vehicle for about 2 years and for the last year the power steering message comes across my radio display everytime the vehicle is on and stays on. My power steering pump is electric and occasionally I will lose my power steering while I am driving.
While accelerating quickly to enter a highway or to pass a vehicle the car loses the power steering. Resulting in two near miss accidents. Once the vehicle swerved into the other lane almost hitting another car, second when the car swerved I almost struck a concrete barrier. Gm is aware and the car is listed in a recall. Gm states it was not directly built in a plant with the defective electrical power steering assist motor. This is unsafe.
Lost power steering as I was making a left turn. The car would not turn and the brake was not slowing down the car. Ended up going up the sidewalk and crashing into a wall causing the airbags to deploy and spraining my wrist down to my elbow along with minor back pains. Now the car is considered a total loss.
While backing from driveway I lost power steering and the vehicles dic was showing power steering. I was unable to move steering wheel even using both hands . I pushed the onstar button for a diagnostic test but they were unable to determine why I lost power steering. After turning off vehicle the power steering reset and I was able to then drive the vehicle. Problem has become intermittent. Have also lost control of power steering while accelerating onto interstate I-24 from on ramp, steering wheel would not turn left then there was a clicking sound for about 10 -15 seconds then I was able to steer vehicle. Incident was reported to gm and was told that my VIN number did not come back as a recall. Was further advised by gm to file a report with the highway safety board.
I bought this 2006 Malibu LS in December and started experiencing the power steering arbitrarily going out as we were driving down the road. It has occurred 5 times now. There is a recall for this model make and year car for this exact problem but the VIN is not in the database so the dealer will not work on it. I called the Chevrolet 1800 number and they confirmed it was a recall and it was based on part numbers and the dealer could look and see if the parts were covered but the dealer want touch it until the VIN is listed. The last incident was on the interstate and my daughter lost power steering and while trying to get the car to the side of the interstate was barely missed by an 18 wheeler which caused another car to get run off into the median when he swerved to miss my daughter.
On several occasions my car has lost power steering nearly causing a wreck. This is a danger and needs to be fixed but I was told I would be mailed notice on April 28 . I am very concerned for the safety of my child as well as other people on the roadways. My car also randomly loses battery power. . I assume this is electrical.
I have an 06 Malibu that lost power steering for no reason I was able to drive home steering was extremely hard I have been reading the website about recalls and was wondering if my vehichle was under this recall.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated his VIN number was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) however, was experiencing the failure described in the recall. The contact had experienced the failure on several occasions, while driving at various speeds, the contact would intermittently lose control of the power steering. Immediately following the failure "lost power steering" warning indicator would illuminate after the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic test. The dealer stated they could not duplicate the failure. The contact both manufacturer and dealer were both made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000. Az.
My car had a dinging and then across the radio it said power steering and the car was very hard to steer, I lost power steering. I am an older lady and slowed down and pulled to the shoulder and I could not even turn the wheel. I called my son to come help me. He got in and started the car and the radio didn't say power steering any more. He pulled out and I followed him. We got to our street and he started to turn right into our drive way and he all of a sudden threw up his arms. He got out of the car and came and told me that the car stalled and the bell dinged and power steering came on the radio. We took the car to the dealership on 8/12/13. They diagnosed the car and said the power steering assist motor was shorting out and it would cost me 699. 03 to fix. I had no money to get it fixed and the dealer said they re set the computer and said I should have it fixed as soon as possible because it was a safety issue. My son took the car home and it happened twice on the way home. On 9/25/13 we had our local dealer replace the motor. They told me the code the computer read said it was either the assist motor or the steering column. They said the motor was the most likely cause and replaced it. The total was 643. 78 and the initial inspection was 99. 53. On 10/18/13 I had the same thing happen as I was driving into the local market parking lot, ding, ding, ding and I lost power steering. I almost hit a parked car in the lot and couldn't steer it. I took it back and they said it is the intermediate shaft or the steering column and had nothing to do with the original problem and charged me another 90. 00 to look at it. I cannot afford 1200. 00 to fix the column. My son searched the internet for 2006 Malibu steering problems and found transport canada recalled 67,414 2005, 2006 and 2008 Malibu's, pontiac and saturns. Why has the us not offered a recall. I am afraid to drive it now.
I recently bought this vehicle for my 18 year old daughter to take with her to college. We have owned it approximately 3 weeks now. On 7/30/13, we were driving down a local city road at approximately 45miles per hour, heard a dinging alert sound, and immediately lost power steering. She was able to move to the emergency lane to get out of the flow of traffic. She turned the vehicle off and when the vehicle was restarted, the power steering returned to normal. On 7/31/13 she was alone in the vehicle, and was once again traveling in town and lost the power steering twice on that trip. The first time she was driving at approximately 25 miles per hour, and the second time going around a sharp curve going approximately 10 miles per hour. I am frustrated due to the fact that there has not been a recall on this vehicle as it is an extreme safety hazard with over a hundred complaints on this site alone. I have also found many other complaints in other online blogs. I have been told at this point that I could replace the steering column, the eps fuse, the alternator, the grounding wire, and even the motor and assembly for the power steering and that in some instances none of these expensive repairs have fixed the problem. What is it going to take before someone does something to hold Chevrolet accountable for their product? is it going to take multiple deaths and/or multimillion dollar lawsuits to make someone listen and do something about this? what if this vehicle was one that you purchased for your child? would you put them in potential harms way? how many complaints does it take for action?????.
When driving at lower speeds (25-30 mph) my chevy Malibu would chime at me and lose power steering, sometimes causing my car to go into other lanes and/or almost hitting sidewalks and curbs. I replaced the electric steering motor in 2013, but my car has not been part of the recall even though the same issues that are listed under the recall is what happened with my car. I had the motor replaced at a Chevrolet dealership, so there is a record of the repair.
My wife was driving from work when the car lost power steering. This happened as she was leaving the parking lot of her company. She parked and turned off the car. When she restarted the car the problem went away but the power steering seems different and not as smooth.
This has been happening for sometime now. I start my vehicle up to go, put it in drive and the car loses its power steering(steering wheel will not move) and the power steering warning shows up on the dash display. I also notice at a stop or at slow speeds the steering wheel jumps from right to left quite frequently.
While driving a warning chime appeared thru the radio display "power steering" and the vehicle lost power steering. With great difficulty vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and turned off. Upon restarting the car the power steering came back only to go out again. Had the computer reset and problem hasn't happened again, yet! check online and this vehicle and other models with the same power assist steering have been recalled as recent as 1212 in canada, but not in the USA. Everything on the internet, including gms website say the steering column has to be replaced. We checked with the local Chevrolet dealer and there is no recall for this VIN #. This vehicle is driven on major highways everyday, so I am having the steering column replaced at a cost of $550 out of pocket. Gm's website says it is not a safety problem because it can still be steered off the road. This is my daughter's car and she can barely handle this car without the power assist. I drove it and lost the power assist and I bumped a curb trying to turn it into a parking lot. How can this not be a safety issue? can I be reimbursed for the cost of fixing this problem?.
September 2012 I had both front drive axles replaced because there was shaking in the steering and the mechanic said it was those axles. May 2013 the shaking was still very persistent and I was hearing a popping noise when turning the wheels. Mechanic replaced the sway bars. This still didnt solve the problem. 6-3-13 when driving about 25mph "power steering" came up on radio dial and car was very hard to steer. After turning car off and restarting didnt have a problem. It has done this many times since then. Today 06-17-13 I still have power steering, but now there is a scrubbing sound and the steering wheel is real "jerky" when turning the wheels, especially to the left. I am very concerned that I am going to lose my power steering while on the highway and I wont be able to control the car. Something needs to be done immediatly before lives our lost.
I lost power steering when I ignite my car. There is chiming and message for checking power steering. Turn off the motor, and power steering was back. While I accellerated onto highway, I heard the same chiming. Had no time to look at the message. I searched online, and found that my power steering was lost for several seconds. This is horrible. This is absolute a safety issue. I wonder why there is no recall on this. Gm took billions of dollars from tax papyer's pockets to bail it out, but can not make a right car. Shame on gm.
Randomly while driving at higher speeds or accelerating the battery light will flicker on and off on the dashboard. This time while accelerating on a entrance ramp to the highway the battery light along with all the idiot lights on the dashboard flashed and I temporarily lost power steering. This happened twice within a period of two minutes. Normally whenever the battery lights or other idiot lights flicker a chime is heard. This is kind of scary since it seems like this is a common problem and tends to happen at higher speeds.
2006 chevy Malibu - power steering displays on screen - then I lose the power steering, if I turn the car off it will disappear and power steering resumes. This has happend approximately a dozen times over the past two weeks. Does chevy have a recall for this. I have searched and can't find any and I have found that others have the same issue. Very unsafe driving conditions.

My 2006 chevy Malibu maxx has lost power steering three times. It has been to the mechanic twice. Driving at any time, but especially at higher speeds on the highway, is frightening because the power steering my go out unexpectedly.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact received notification of a safety improvement campaign and warranty extension due to a possible steering defect in her year, make and model. The contact stated that if the manufacturer would send out such a letter calling for special coverage, then it should be under recall. She was concerned that she would lose power steering while on an expressway and not be capable of pulling over. The contact experienced no failures at the time of the complaint. The contact called the manufacturer to inquire about having the part replaced to prevent any possible failure and she was advised that the warranty would only be extended if the failure actually occurred. The current and failure mileage was approximately 16,300.
When drving down the road atempting to switch lanes to the left the power steering failed. The vehicle lost power steering and pulled to the left towards oncoming traffic. Fortuneatly I was able to compensate for the loss and pull over without incident. My info center indicated a "power steering" error and chimed 3 times. After turning the car off and back on the problem remedied itself. Since then this has happened three additional times. This is an intermitent problem and the dealership cannot diagnos the error without reproducing it.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu lt(na). While driving at any speed, the contact noticed that the vehicle would lose all power steering intermittently and the power steering symbol would illuminate on the instrument panel; it was difficult to steer at that point. The contact would turn the vehicle off and restart it again in order to reset the power steering. Both the dealer and manufacturer was notified who informed the contact that there were no recalls. While driving my 2006 chevy Malibu the power steering suddenly went out. I soon noticed that every time the car turned to the right it would lose the power steering function. This causes the steering wheel to lock up and it must be heavily muscled to turn the car. I took it to a gm dealer, and they were forced to replace the steering column as well as the power steering motor, as the Malibu has electric power steering.
I have a 06 Malibu maxx and the power steering keeps going out. When I first got the car, it was driving fine and the all of a sudden I lose power steering and the words "power steering" is displayed. I have to turn of the car and turn it back on so it can reset. It has been doing it more and more lately, and a few times I almost have hit someone. I called chevy to see if there was any recalls on this problem and they said no. There was a recall on the 2004 and 2005 chevys Malibu with electronic power steering, but nothing on the 2006. Chevy also told me to take it to the dealer and let them inspect. Which I did and they can find no problem.
I have a 2006 Malibu lt that lost the power steering on a street, on able to maneuver the car I had some bystanders help me push the car to a parking lot. I have researched and seen that there are many Malibus with this problem some with accidents.
This car loses power steering while driving. 1st time I was merging into high speed parkway traffic and was frightened when directing the car was almost too difficult for me. My petite daughter would not have been able to do this if she had been driving. Turning corners is extremely difficult as the turning radius is greatly reduced. My wide arched turns bring me dangerously close to other vehicles on the road. I have chronic muscle pain from the muscle use it takes to turn the wheels of my car. I have been told by the dealer's service manager that they are aware of this issue but will charge approximately $900. 00 to remedy it. The power steering system is electronic not hydraulic and I fully expect it is the same system presently recalled on the chevy cobalt. The problem descriptions of the cobalt and Malibu are identical. This failure occurs whenever I drive my car - everyday!.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While driving approximately 10 mph she lost power steering without any prior warnings. She was able to safely restart the vehicle and resume normal vehicle operation. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 80,500. The vehicle identification number was unavailable.
Loss of power steering! driving less than 1 mile I loss all power steering! I made a left hand turn down a cul-DE-sac street and when turning around at the end of the road I lost my power steering! I was shocked that after driving to the same bus stop morning after morning with my child in the car that I had lost control of the steering wheel due to the power steering system that failed! it was very hard to make the simplest turn. The difficulty that I had experienced took me by surprise. I put the car in park and shut the car down as soon as I was in a safe area. I waited then re-started the car and the power steering had come back. I could feel that it came back in the steering wheel as I barely accelerated forward worried that I might lose the control of the wheel again I waited for all the kids at the bus stop to board the bus before I drove back home! I immediately looked online about recalls for my car incase there was a known problem, not sure that there was actually a problem with my make & model & somewhat surprised I found alot of similar situations on the NHTSA website. There seems to be others that without warning like myself loss the power steering. I even found a suggestion that read to turn the car off if possible then re-start to have power steering come back. Even though that's what I did for the safety for the kids & others. I thought are you kidding me? turn the car off to re-gain power steering should I lose it again? I sure hope that I am not on a busy highway or where kids are close to the road should this happen again. I called gm to complain of this safety issue seeing as how I did find posted bulletins about power steering loss I had believed that gm would want to inspect the safety of my car . Since it is an known problem of safety. . I was told by gm to bring the car in & pay for an inspection to look at the power steering system. Gm said the cost to look at my car could start at $65-$95 maybe be higher depends on what they do!!!.
