On 11-18-2017 the steering wheel on this car starts to move back and forth by itself. When driving, the power steering stops working, then starts working. You can hear a noise in the steering column like crackling. Sounds like a sensor looking for something. When power steering is out, car can barely be turned. This car did have the steering recall work done on it a few years ago. Haven't talked to my dealer yet. Very dangerous. Stopped driving the car.

When accelerating power steering assist locks momentarily making unsafe driving conditon. Let off pedal and it comes back. Dashboard bell also dings when this occurs. Also steering makes binding noise like a large rubber band being stretched when you turn the wheel back and forth.
Before I seen it was in here, my intermediate shaft went out on my car, and I replaced it. I saw the recall in here and called dorman to have them reimburse me 258. 00 for the part, but they said that their not responsible to replace the part as your inf0rmation in here states, so who is in charge? I have proof I had to replace it and can disclose the information. I just want the 258. 00 I paid to replace it. My vehicle was moving when I heard the noise as I would steer to the right more than the left but both sides made noise.

On may 20, 2014 I filed a complaint regarding the electronic power steering, the fuel level indicator and the clunk noise in the steering system on my car. I contacted general motors by e mail and they gave me a telephone number to call. Today, may 27, 2014 I called general motors regarding their recall for the power steering problem. They informed me that my car was not included in the recall. They gave me the telephone number of a dealer in puerto rico where I have to take the car for a diagnostic. Gm will not cover the cost of the repairs. Why do we have to pay for the bad job the car manufacturers do when they make their cars? there must be a way in which consumers get compensated by these companies for the expenses they impose on us with their defective vehicles. For me this may be the last Chevrolet I will buy.

Making a right turn, I heard a clunking noise from the steering, the car pulled to the right and the steering wheel felt like it the power steering failed. About 1 year ago, I have had the car in for service at the dealers for a knocking in the steering and they found nothing wrong.

My 2006 Malibu maxx has been have issues with the steering system. Started out with an intermittent clunking noise several months ago. The car has only 67,000 miles on it. Now it clunks every time you turn the steering wheel. The front end has always road ruff like a steering vibration but thought it was just the make of the car. Our 00' monte carlo and 00' impala in comparison never road like this. Thought it was the tires so we upgraded to a better riding tire, did not make a difference. Over the last couple weeks steering noise getting worse, sensor light came on indicating power steering. Check with mechanic and cannot find anything that appears wrong on vehicle. Just this weekend on the entrance ramp on the interstate the wheel just jerked to the right. Was able to bring it back to central position quickly but was concerned. Happened today to my wife on the way to the store on a two lane road. Luckily it jerked her to the right and she was able to steer it back to the center position. Concerned of potential for serious accident and will not be so lucky next time. After plugging in steering issues with Malibu maxx's, I was shocked to see hundreds of complaints on forums and consumer sites regarding a range of years with the maxx. Gm needs to wake up, does it take people dying or seriously getting hurt before they will pay attention to all these people and their issues and serious ones at that. My husband is a Ford mechanic and wanted me to buy a Ford because of quality issues, but I love the style of the maxx, the cargo capacity and now I'm having second thoughts as no one seems to be getting help other than gm has some solutions that are costing the consumer lots of money and there are still issues after the fixes. I'm seriously considering getting rid of it and settling for a car that will insure me a safe ride and keep my passengers safe. Wise up to this before people are seriously hurt. Thank you.
Power steering system fails intermittently and without any advanced warning. Once the power steering module fails, the steering wheel is extremely difficult to turn but is still turnable. The information display system says power steering and a chime noise is audible. The first time the power steering system failed on me was during a turn and almost caused me to collide with oncoming traffic. The failure of the power steering system is becoming more and more frequent, about ever 30 minutes. The power steering system will go back to normal functioning once the car is shut off and started again. Why it fails is not known to me or why it goes back to normal operation after it is restarted. In addition, the ignition key was extremely hot when it was removed from the ignition.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. Whenever she started the vehicle, it made a dinging noise and the power steering locked. There were no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. She had to turn the vehicle on and off for approximately a half hour before it would reset itself. She did not take the vehicle to the dealer; however, she called and informed them of the failure and was told that there were no related recalls and she had to pay the repair cost. The manufacturer was not called. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 30,000.
2006 chevy Malibu maxx - 2 problems 1. Metal to metal noise as steering wheel is turned 2. Vibrating noise around dashboard all the time.
I have an 06 chevy Malibu lt v6 that has had a steering issue since I purchased the vehicle. While the car was under warranty it was in the shop 3 seperate occasions (about every 15k miles) for steering problems and noises while turning. The dealership replaced the intermediate steering shatf 2 times and did nothing the 3rd. I hear noises all the time when I turn (the dealership can find anything wrong) and just this morning while driving to work the steering locked up and I was unable to turn and almost wrecked if it wasnt for my quick thinking. Once I shut the car off and restared the engine it appeared to fix the problem for now. I have seen that this is a major issue on a lot of 06 Malibu's and I am wondering why there has been a recall on other models (cobalt and g5) for the same exact issue but not on the Malibu when there are obviously enough complaints to warrant a recall when people can get seriously injured even killed because of this issue. It makes me not want to drive my car (or should I say death trap on wheels) at all. What is it going to take someone to get killed before action is taken.
I have a 2006 chevy Malibu and the power steering keeps going out. I also hear a noise when turning my steering wheel.

Knocking noise in the steering column. Had to have iit fixed twice and it now does it again. This is a repetative problem and it appears that this car has a design issue.
