Steering went out on my 06 with only 35k on it. Chevy would not participate in the repair even though there was a recall #14116b. I was driving on the city streets driving straight when the steering failed due to this faulty product, but fortunately I was not hurt. I was a chevy supporter because my dad has always owned them, but now we will campaign against Chevrolet and their lack of care. I will upload documents when I receive the repair bill from our local chevy dealer who also was not much help in this matter. The steering outage was as described in the recall.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving low speeds, the steering failed and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 15v064000 (steering), but the failure recurred. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who stated that the power steering assist needed to be repaired. A repair appointment was scheduled with the mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 137,000.
Recall 14116, steering shaft torque sensor was performed 1 April 2016 at 37560 miles. On approx. 1-05-18, at approx. 76000 miles, the steering failed completely resulting in extremely difficult control of the vehicle. This was less than 2 years after the recall replacement. Upon diagnosis technicians found that the steering shaft torque sensor and the electronic power steering motor control module had failed. The motor control module probably failed due to increased stress on the system due to the torque sensor having failed. The repair shop had two original equipment replacements for the motor control module fail out of the box before a good one was provided, and both units had to be repeatedly tested and adjusted before acceptable performance was reached. Based on the history of these type failures it is apparent that gm has not corrected the problems with these system components. It cost $747. 36 for parts, and $234. 00 labor for the repair, not including tax. It is not acceptable that gm is not actually correcting the apparent design issues with these systems, but is continuing to use them in vehicles even with their history of failure. Gm customer service offered no help at all for the cost of this repair even though their parts appear to be defective in design. Their only response was that they had made the recall corrections at no cost once and would not do it again. Yet the oem replacement parts failed repeatedly out of the box. It seems that gm should have some responsibility as they continue to produce defective products that appears to fail repeatedly. .
2013 car loss power steering steering column replaced under special policy #10183a car again loss power steering Jan. 2017 4 years after first replacement and 50000 miles had to replaced steering column again gm will not cover second replacement need to be recalled again this is a safety hazard steering fail driving down highway.

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Driving my vehicle down interstate 95 heading towards virginia beach to return to college and the steering wheel to my chevy Malibu year 2006 just locked up and became hard to control the shaking of the steering wheel. Had steering column replaced at dealer on sept 9, 2014 and now this issue of sudden loss of steering ability. The dealer received $1600. 00 from me for steering column repair and I should not have to pay for this issue again especially when so many other Malibu's has had the same problem. How is gm excluding certain 2006 chevy Malibu's from recall notice of sudden steering failure!!!!!.
Merging onto interstate at 55 merge speed and as entering onto first thru lane the power steering died out and acceleration dropped on its own. Nearly hit by an 18 wheeler that had been safely back from my entry point before the steering and engine both failed. I pulled as hard as I could to the right and a bell rang but there was no check engine light or any other indicator light for the steering. When I braked, the steering came back and I was able to pull to the right out of harms way. There was no other car on the entry ramp or I am sure we would have been rear ended at high speed this happens often in ordinary traffic at speeds between 35 and 45 once the car is warmed up when I attempt to change lanes and sometimes a bell rings and other times it does not. I received a recall notice #13036 and it describes symptoms included here and additional potential problems. The part is not yet available as gm has been telling me since March of this year. I have discontinued driving this car unless it is absolutely necessary and if the distance is less than 5 miles because it has not yet warmed up to cause the problem. This is a dangerous defect and we were lucky to have not been killed by the 18 wheeler.
Was making a right hand turn to enter onto the expressway and steering either locked up or became very hard to steer (it all happened quickly) causing the car to hit the curb and severely damaging the wheel, alignment, etc. Gm replaced the faulty power steering box (recall) but has found themselves not liable for the collateral damage sustained because of the faulty power steering. Gm says I have no proof that the damage that is visible on the vehicle was directly caused by steering failure. Really??!! I've always been a big chevy fan, but this leaves a very bitter taste that may never go away!!!!! ## VIN failed ## chevy Malibu maxx 2006 ##.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while in reverse, the steering failed without warning. Steering wheel failure caused car accident. While driving through a freeway tunnel, the power steering went out and made it impossible to steer causing my car to hit the tunnel wall. The car had less than 40,000 miles, yet the power steering indicator went on. The power steering reset and went back on, after the car was restarted. Please initial a defect investigation or a safety recall before this happens to someone else.
Letter from senator nelson on behalf of constituent regarding steering problems on her 2006 Chevrolet Malibu; please send response directly to senator office and reference constituent. The consumer stated the front brake calipers failed to retract causing the brakes to overheat and catch fire. The mechanic stated it may have been due to a factory flaw as he had never seen both calipers fail together. The brake caliper seals were melted from heat and they were cracked/dry rotted letting the caliper sleeve rust. A month prior, the consumer noticed the power steering seemed stiff and the vehicle became difficult to steer, the consumer did receive a recall notice regarding a potential problem with the steering. On December 20, 2011 the consumer experienced another steering failure, slow acceleration, and overheating of the brakes. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the mechanic believed there was probably contamination in the brake fluid, as it was milky. The mechanic recommended that all the rubber components in the brake and abs be replaced due to the contamination.
I was driving my car on the freeway coming home after picking up my 4 yr old grand daughter when suddenly steering wheel locked up on me causing me to loose full control of my car. I had to muscle my steering wheel in order to steer in the right direction. I immediately turned on my emergency flasher to alert other drivers that I was having a problem. Fortunately the other cars noticed that I was having trouble with my car and slowed down giving me the right away to move over to the emergency lane where I was able to stop and call for help. The problem with my car was the electronic steering pump that had failed. I have made an appointment to have the car repaired. I've done an extended search on the internet and found this problem so widespread a recall should happen so people with this car can drive safely. This is a safety hazard and needs to be addressed by gm. We do not need to have a fatality in order to act on this problem. It seems to me that like Toyota most manufacturers wait to be forced to correct a problem then spend millions of dollars on commercials trying to convince consumers that their cars are safe to drive. With the grace of god this time I was able to get my car off the road safely my fear is what about next time? I usually have my grandchild with me. Please help!.

I own a 2006 chevy Malibu and the electric steering is going out again for the 4th time since I bought the car in 07. The other day me and my 2 kids was going out to eat and the steering went out while turning left onto another road causing me to almost hit a coal truck. I called gm and told them the steering once more has gone out. Gm told me they knew of a problem with the steering in these cars but didn't have a recall on these models. So I got online and couldn't believe all the owners that have the same problem as I do with the Malibu from 04-07 with the steering. The chevy cobalt is being recalled because of steering failures, but why not the Malibu, they share basically the same parts as the cobalt. Chevy need to correct this problem so I don't have to replace these parts again at 75k. This is costing me to much and its putting my life and most import, my kids life in danger when driving this unsafe chevy model.

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving less than 50 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The steering wheel then locked in place, preventing the contact from moving the wheel left or right. On a separate occasion, while driving less than 50 mph, the vehicle began turning left on its own. The steering wheel was locked and the vehicle coasted off the road on its own as well. The dealer stated that the steering column failed and could be repaired at the cost of $700. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 50,000. Updated 11/25/08. Updated 11/25/08.
I have a 2006 chev Malibu. At about 38,000 miles the electric steering quit working. I had to replace. Since the installation of new electric steering component, the steering system makes a very loud snap or clunking or metal on metal sound everytime I make a turn or take off from a stop. Some thing is shifting or moving in the steering gear shaft or rack & pinon. Called the dealer and they said it was normal that it does it and some grease would help quite it. That was there answer for poor engineering. There are many people that have the same problem and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for it from gm. If I try to sell my Malibu to someone else I will either take a large loss or not be able to sell it at all. I am complaining because gm has not stepped up and accepted responsibility for this problem and come up with a solution. To have anything done at a dealer is 60 to $80. 00 per hour, which all the unfortunate owners of those gm electric steering vehicles should not have to pay. I would liketo see some pressure put on gm to resolve this very exasperating and potentially serious erosive safety condition. As time goes on the situation gets worse and resonates more and more up the steerling column. Lets get this fixed before there is a serious accident or loss of life because the steering fails on these automobiles. Sincerely.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering would lock abnormally and without warning while driving various speeds. There was also an abnormal rattling from the steering wheel. In addition, the fuel level gauge would provide erroneous fuel level readings and the interior lighting would malfunction sporadically. The steering failure was repaired under an unknown recall, yet the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was unable to duplicate the steering failure but replaced the fuel tank sensor. Later, the contact was involved in an unrelated crash and while having the vehicle repaired, the contact was advised that the steering column was locked defectively and would need replacing. The steering column was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 45,000.
