The vehicle has experienced ongoing engine performance and safety-related warning events. The first major issue was a single occurrence of an overheating condition that displayed an “engine overheating – idle engine” warning. After that event, the vehicle was taken in for repairs. Following the repair attempt, the vehicle began displaying repeated check-engine warnings and multiple occurrences of “engine power reduced. ” during these episodes, the vehicle lost acceleration ability and hesitated. One of the “engine power reduced” incidents occurred while driving at highway speeds with a passenger onboard. The vehicle was unable to maintain speed and required pulling out of active traffic, creating a safety risk. These issues have continued despite previous service attempts and diagnostics. The warning messages and power loss are unpredictable and create a potential hazard, especially during highway driving, merging, or transporting passengers. There has been no crash, fire, or injury, but the repeated sudden loss of power presents a serious safety concern.

A couple days ago I went to drive my car and it took a second to actually turn on and it was shaking way more than usual and pooped up with a message saying “engine power is reduced” I haven’t drove my car since because I tried and it was moving very slow, and I also didn’t wanna cause further issues. For some time now my car has been shaky. I have taken it in and balanced my tires because of this issue and nothing had helped. I am always scared to drive it because it has been so shaky but now that this message has popped up it’s even worse and it’s during my whole drive. Also every time I park it isn’t connecting and says “shift to park” even though it is shifted into park. I have to shake it and press some button to go all register that it is shifted into park and can shut my vehicle off. I have read every where that this issue has happened to so many 2016/2017 chevy Malibu’s. I have read the dangers and I do not feel safe driving my car like this. I also didn’t have my car when there was a recall on this exact part before. And I’m guessing the dealership who had it before me did not fix it, causing the problems to worsen other parts of my car. I can’t drive this car due to the safety and I believe it should be a recalled. I am not totally sure what is doing it but as of all the other people online, they said it has to do the gas pedal (2k replacement) and fuel pumps and also could have burned wires which my car also has. Thank you.

I started smelling a strong smell of gas while operating the vehicle. Took to a dealership who diagnosed a turbocharger clamp and exhaust failure. From what I understand I am not the only one with a clamp/exhaust/seal problem. A friend of mine who owned a gm product had similar problems to the point her engine failed altogether. Please investigate!.
When parking it says shift to park even when I’m already in park. The dealer says it’s the shifter however after seeing numerous other vehicles with this issue I believe it’s electrical.
My car has the auto shut off and when im driving it sometimes just dies while im driving with no warning and no power steering to pull over. Also when im at a red light and the auto shut off comes on when it starts back up all my head lights turning signals radio everything goes off and comes back on when the car restarts then when u go to take off it will die and everytime I push on the gas it hesitates to go if it dont die. I took my car to an independent car repair shop and they said they have tested everything and I have also replaced the front and back batteries and I was told it is the computer and he has had several of the same car come in with the exact problem.

Purchased a car for financing from barret motors and 2300 lakeview pkwy, rowlett, TX and as soon as I drove it off the lot on [xxx] the engine light popped on. I immediately called and was told to just take it to chevy/GMC for servicing but was not told why, but just because the engine light was on I was told to go. I couldn’t take an appointment ASAP because I just started a new job which they also knew. The car has had a recall since 09-06-19 for an engine control module. Which is a serious issue and this car never had it completed and sold me a car with possible engine issue and did not inform there’s a recall on the vehicle for almost 5 years now. I took the car to get serviced at chevy for the recall on 09/09/2025 and now I am facing multiple issues with the car from it not being done years ago. The recall was n192221960 and it’s major so to sell a car before getting the properly service and I have been financing the vehicle for a year now. Never not once late and I am now being told there’s nothing can be done. I have photos of the car having the engine light pop on the same day u financed this vehicle. Barret knew a serious engine problem was effecting this car for 5 years and still deciding to sell it to me for financing on [xxx]. I need immediate assistance. The computer was not recognizing my car being in the correct gear shift. It did this for a few days until finally, I couldn't drive it. The car would not recognize any part of the gear being in the correct position. The car would not move forward or reverse, resulting in a tow. The mechanic at reed lallier Chevrolet in fayetteville nc was even able to guess my car make and model from the symptoms I reported (which was later discovered, in my case, the gear shift link had loosened), and confirmed that if this happened while in motion, it would have been very dangerous. He also said they had 3 other cars that same day that had different causes but the same exact faulty gear recognition, with all of them being recent-year Malibu Chevrolet models and the following day when I was doing my follow-up call concerning my car, 2 more were brought in with the faulty gear recognition issue.

Car pauses after stopping at lights and stop signs and in stop-n-go traffic and won't go as soon as gas pedal is pressed. It hesitates then jerks forward once the gas is activated. Check engine warning is for stop/start transmission accumulator sensor! cost to repair over $1300 and seems to be the same issue seen in thousands of 2018 Malibu's that have been recalled??? my car does not show an active recall??? chevy rep andrea at 1-800-222-1020 said sorry no recall for your car and to contact you with complaint? this issue almost caused my wife to have accidents after the car lurched forward after stopping. We were also beeped at many times as cars behind us were frustrated we could not move for 10-20 seconds after stopping! [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] car is being repaired now by belise Chevrolet warwick ri 877-553-0957. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
While driving my 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, the electrical system intermittently fails: the radio shuts off, the instrument cluster goes blank (gauges drop to zero, fuel/temperature show empty), headlights flicker off then on, and turn-signal indicators disappear. Warning messages such as “service theft” and “no key detected” appear, power steering becomes difficult, and the vehicle shakes, stalls, or even turns off completely at stop signs. Sometimes the engine continues running even after the car is shut off, overheating and producing a burnt smell. These failures began months ago, occur unpredictably, and have been witnessed by an independent shop. The loss of lights, steering, and cluster data creates a serious safety hazard, and the vehicle is available for inspection.

High pressure fuel pump blew out while driving on the highway going to minnesota from illinois. Fuel was spraying onto the engine and leaking onto the ground. I immediately pulled over and stopped the car, turned off the engine and raised the hood. The car was taken to a chevy dealership today and I was informed that the high pressure fuel pump literally "blew out. " this could have resulted in an engine fire and fortunately that didn't happen. Online research reveals that chevy had a recall on some 2016-2018 model Malibu's for this very reason.

The warning light comes on and off and is showing (p0498/p0449) which is the evaporative emission system vent control electrical circuit signal has low voltage for a predetermined period of time. Its calling to replace the evaporative emissions canister vent solenoid and I have seen 3 vehicles the same as mine needed the same thing fixed. When the vehicle is in park you can feel it jerk and also while pressing gas when you pull off it stalls. When cranking you can smell fumes .
The car had multiple components fail, mostly electrical. But the main malfunction is the “oil pump” as stated by the dealership service team. Yes it is currently available for inspection upon request. The oil pump failure is the main concern since it is a key component to the vehicle’s engine and performance, this put my safety at risk since it caused several electrical malfunctions causing the car to decrease its engine power while driving on the highway, not only putting the drivers safety at risk but also those around, potentially causing a collision since engine could experience catastrophic failure due to this issue. The problem has been addressed and confirmed by a dealer and manufacturer, but it has not been solved and it has been well over a month now to which they have found no solution since the part was “discontinued. ” there were not symptoms or warning signs before hand, except the car engine revving up at stops prior to the to the failure and check engine light coming on the day it was taken to service at the dealership.
Vehicle will intermittently not start, have to tap on trunk fuse box to get the Malibu to start, the wire is too small and burns up, can’t find anyone to replace it, is a big issue with this generation of Malibu. Vehicle has shut off while on highways and stoplights on multiple occasions.

2008 to 2012 Chevrolet Malibu's have a confirmed problem by mechanics about the fuel system regarding the electrical components going bad. The fuel pump relay will overheat the wiring behind it, and will shut the car off, regardless of if it is driving or not.

In February 2023, we took the Malibu into the dealership for reduced engine power dashboard notification. Light went off when in shop, got the car back and light on once again. When at a red light that turned green, accelerated but car would not go over 20 mph. Almost rear ended. Dealership replaced the vacuum pump gasket and seal. Fast forward one year later. Once again, reduced engine power notification came on again. Once again at red light, when light turned green, car wouldn't accelerate and was very close to being rear ended and difficult to make it through the intersection. Currently at dealer (1/18/24) with dealer having no idea what is wrong with car (today is 1/24/24). The dealer today stated it will be another 1-2 weeks. That will make it three weeks for a diagnoisis. With reduced engine power, it is very dangerous to drive a vehicle like this. Of course, there are hundreds of other complaints for this issue/make/model.
Warning display on dash reads "engine power is reduced " and forces and abrupt reduction on vehicle speed, especially on highway driving on commute. Noticed online multiple similar concerns and complaints. No recall or extended warranty?.

I was driving about 70mph on a highway trying to pass a semi-truck. As I signaled right blinker to merge back into the right lane, the speed reduced to 40mph without notice. I then seen a notification on the dashboard saying "engine power reduced". The car would not accelerate fast enough to clear the truck therefore almost causing a collision of 2 semi-trucks and myself. I was forced to drive off road to help avoid the collision. My fiancé was in the passenger seat when this happened on 11/25/2023. He then began telling me this happened to him a few months prior but he didn't mention it because it resolved itself. This was actually the 3rd time it had happened in this car over the last 2 years. I spoke to the chevy dealership about it the first time I experienced this and they advised that it had not been made a safety recall at that time yet, but the technician who helped me said his son experienced the same thing and it was becoming quite common. It still has not been recalled but there is currently a class action lawsuit because of this. I feel this is very dangerous and what I considered to be reliable transportation, is no longer the case for my family after this experience. This needs to be recalled immediately before people lose lives. Especially since the parts were manufactured incorrectly and Chevrolet had knowledge prior to releasing 2016-2018 vehicles.
The generator control module failed on the vehicle causing the battery to lose charge and then the car to shut down. When looking for the part online I came across a bulletin 13142c which talked about the same exact issue that I faced. According to the bulletin the gcm was to have been replaced, however when searching the service history at the chevy dealer there was a note that the gcm had been inspected, but never replaced. I am looking into this matter to see if I can be reimbursed for the costs of the labor and parts related to the gcm. On a side note this failure did come directly after the car was in a accident where the driverside front end of the car was damaged. The technicians said that the gcm failure had no relationship to the accident.
On 2 occasions my dash had a waring come on that my crash avoidance system was inoperable and on 3 occasions my waring system with the red lights in front of the steering wheel has come on with no cars around. Also on oct 28th the low pressure waring for right rear tire came on 21psi and this wasn't the case and I did get a warning from onstar this time. Gm has sent this vehicle to another gm dealership for the surging problem and this has still not been corrected.

Car has stalled out, or acted like it's going to stall out several times. No check engine light on so unable to identify the issue. There are recalls for other malibs for similar problems, but it states this model is not affected.
The headlights burn out frequently the air conditioner does not work the ignition had to be replaced there's always a code of p0171 the start/stop feature does not work the brakes make the car shake. When does stuff takes place I have to pull the vehicle over cousin me to put others in danger by being on the shoulder of the road broke down. Yes the car is available for inspection. The radio randomly turns on and off therefore the backup camera does not work as it should why this vehicle has not been recalled is beyond me.
After purchasing a brand new Chevrolet Malibu, about 4 months into droving it; the check engine light illuminated and the next day, an error message of “engine power is reduced” was displaying on the dash. The vehicle was turned over to the dealership and two different sensors were replaced. After a day of having the vehicle back after repairs, the check engine light illuminated again. I returned the vehicle to the dealership and was later told that they were unable to duplicate the scenario and the check engine light did not appear anymore. I picked the vehicle up and after another day of driving, the check engine light illuminated for the third time, again with the same engine power reduced message. Vehicle was slow to accelerate from a stop position. The dealership claims to still be unable to duplicate the scenario with no fix at this point.
My car does not register when it is park. I cannot disable the car when this happens. I have been that my car is not in the recall that has already been issued for this issue.
There are many recalls for the year make and model of my vehicle. They just didn't recall my exact VIN. The breaks are recalled, air bags were recalled and they were buying back the vehicles, the fuel delivery system was recalled, headlights were recalled, cruise control was recalled, steering column and yoke was recalled, and a few more. None were recalled for my VIN number when it should have been. I took my car to the dealership today, Chevrolet did a few things under "warranty" instead of issuing a safety recall. (they issued 10 recalls on this year make and model) (one recall was the air bags, my vehicle is doing the same thing). The fuel delivery system and fuel pump was recalled but not on my VIN number. I just really need help getting my car repaired. I cannot afford to fix all of this when there's records dating back to the purchase of the vehicle, showing that there are problems and Chevrolet neglectfully didn't recall it and instead tried to brush it off as a warranty instead of safety recall. My car leaks gas, the steering it messed up, headlights no longer work due to the electrical issue, the instrument cluster was damaged due to the ecm issue, there's just so many problems. . . My car could potentially catch fire for the fuel leak, carbon monoxide smell, electrical wiring and the air bags could potentially deploy.

I have a 2014 Malibu with 87,450 miles. It has worked perfectly up until 6 months ago. It started stalling in traffic intersections and at stop signs, which is a dangerous safety issue. The auto stop would engage and then when I put my foot on the accelerator, it stalled out. I would turn the vehicle off and restart it. I took it to countless mechanics who could not figure out what was causing the problem because the check engine light did not come on and no codes were triggered. The problem became worse over time and once the vehicle stalled, it would not immediately restart. I took it to my chevy dealer and they were baffled as well. They uploaded new software which included the auto stop feature, but it continued to stall. They replaced the front battery and checked the one in the trunk. It still stalled. The dealer said that since the check engine light did not come on, they were shooting in the dark. I asked them to disconnect the auto stop function, but they said that they couldn't. Unlike other models, there was no disconnection method. I have looked at many on-line chats on the 2014 chevy Malibu and this defect in the auto stop function seems pretty prevalent. No one has come up with a workable solution. I filed a notice of claim with Chevrolet corporate and asked them to provide a fix. Does anyone have any ideas of either how to fix the auto stop or to disable it? right now I am shifting into neutral at all traffic signals and stop signs, so that the auto stop function does not engage, but that seems like a poor fix to the problem.
Underlying fuel pump went out.
I took my car to to firestone to have the brakes checked because I had a stiff brake pedal and could only use my emergency brake to stop. They did a basic and advanced diagnostic and said that the brake booster that I have has been recalled and also other equipments on my car has been recalled and I must bring it to a dealership. I searched my VIN and nothing popped up even though months ago I was emailed a recall notice on the fuel pump system and air bags and it has never been repaired in my car even from the past owners. There have been 10 recalls from Malibu's manufactured in 2016 and my car shows every sign and indication that it is one of those few selected. My VIN should be updated or investigated for parts in my vehicle that have been recalled. The car stops when idle for two minutes or longer and shuts off the engine and air if you use the usb outlet there is a serious electrical problem which is also a safety hazard according to NHTSA guidelines.
