I had been noticing the smell of gasoline around the exterior of my 2009 Malibu after shutting down the motor. I could not detect any location of where the leak was coming from. Additionally, at times my check engine light would come on and then go off. This coincided with the vehicle running "oddly". So, I took it in to michael's Chevrolet in fresno, CA for a repair estimated at $350. Later they called me with a revised estimate of $1950 to cover replacement of the "cracked fuel pump module reed line, and, replacement of the air pump. . . . I refused to let them do the work after being educated on the problem via the internet. They tried to charge me the original estimated amount for the cost of the diagnosis. Is there a recall on this vehicle for a defective fuel pump?.

2012 Malibu intermittent no start . Hard crank but won't start. Problem started a month ago, randomly wouldn't start had it towed to mechanic but they couldn't duplicate problem. 2 days later same thing, had it towed again. Started next day for mechanic. After 3rd tow it wouldn't start and they replaced fuel pump. 4 days later no start again, had it towed but of course it started the 4 days mechanic had it. I picked it up and drove it all day. Tried to leave in the evening and no start. It's back at the mechanics, going to replace fuss box. Hopefully this works. It has never stalled while operating but it does lose power while driving and hesitates. Had the vehicle towed a total of 4 times and 1500$ later car still isn't fixed. Mechanic is having hard time pin pointing problem. I travel out of town on business frequently and can't depend on this vehicle. I've read multiple posts about same issue it seems chevy would try to resolve it.

Noticed a strong fuel smell coming from the back of the car. An inlet line on the fuel pump was cracked allowing fuel to leak on the top of the tank and on the exhaust.
Gas leaking, module fuel pump & sender assembly had to be replaced, article in times paper said it was recalled because of this problem in 2012, I never received a recall notice. This could have been a very dangerous problem as the gas odor was very strong and I kept having to fill my car up with gas. Did not take it to the dealership because I did not receive a notice and wanted it fixed before someone got hurt or killed so I took it to my mechanic. It was leaking gas when it was stationary, in motion but I smelled it the most when it was in the garage locked up.
Fuel pump recall.

These are the photos take of the fuel pump after it was removed by mathis auto service (see the attached invoice). As you can see the tag has only a small part of a bar code, I didn't know whether or not this was the part number or not, but it seem there was no number. The top of the pump was very dirty and wet from gasoline. I had the fuel pump replace after I was transporting a client and the car started sputtering and lost power from 45-miles-per hour to about 10-miles per hour, before I was able to turn into a parking lot. This scared the client and lead them to report to lyft about the incident. I also reported the issue to lyft ride share and they shut down my vehicle for safety reasons by deactivating my account. Since then I have had the Chevrolet dealership to complete 4 recalls, which did not clear up the problem. Or correct the fuel pump from seizing up and stalling out. I paid for the replacement part of a new fuel pump and everything has been working properly. And my account has been reactivated with lyft. I spoke to ti automotive ceo, about their recall on their fuel pump seize, stopping the fuel flow to the engine creating a stalling condition. I was told these issue was only in 2010 models and they will not repair or acknowledge the defects in earlier models of chevy Malibu. But there are issues with other years models stalling out in traffic.
Car randomly not starting had solenoids replaced and fuel pump. It started a few times then wouldn't start acts like it's going to but not getting enough fuel. Had diagnostic reading done when it was doing this the code reading was vehicle submersion. The mechanic asked if it had ever been flooded like in deep water. Never had been but that was the code reading. He redid diagnostics different codes then came up showing other crazy things. None of these were correct. Anyway long story short 3 different garages had no idea what to do. I traded the car for a new one but I believe this should be looked into because alot of people I've talked to with this year make and model car around the same mileage are having this problem my car had 73000 miles. Sometimes it's shutting down while driving. There is something faulty in the computer system that's not showing up until a few years after purchase. I have receipts of repairs and phone numbers to garages.
While transporting school aged passengers in my car during the heavy morning rush hour traffic, my car starting decelerating without any type of prior warning signs. No icon lights (I. E. Check engine, battery, etc. ) on the dashboard came on to indicate that there was some type of problem. This was scary. I managed to pull over. Once on the shoulder, my car stopped completely. It would not restart. We felt the violent vibrations as the oncoming cars sped past us on the interstate as we sat for ten minutes trying to restart my car. My car would try to start, but it was not getting the need fuel even though I had a full tank of gas. I tried pushing down on the gas petal to assist, but it did not work. Eventually, my car started and we made it to our destination. This was the first time that my car cut off on me while driving. I was able to drive it to a reparable licensed mechanic business, I was informed that my car was not throwing any codes. No repair work could be done. On another occasion, my car would not start. I driven it a few hours ago. It did the same thing. Again, no icons on the dashboard illuminated. After it started, I took it to a different mechanic shop. I had my fuel pump replaced. This was extremely costly. My car worked for about a week; however, the problem was not fixed. My car would not start even though I was giving it fuel. I had my car towed to the dealership. I was informed that there was a hole in the line leading to the fuel tank. The line was cut where the hole was located and replaced. My car worked for a week before the problem reoccurred. I had my car towed back to the dealership. I was told that the problems were the fuse block, the wire harness, and that a line had burned over the fuel pump or tank. Not only is this expensive, but fire and gas is scary. Hopefully, my car will be finally repaired.
Several months ago I noticed the strong odor of gas coming from the rear of the car. , but saw no leaks. Last week I noticed a leak coming from the top of the fuel tank and dripping on to the exhaust system. I took the car to folsom Chevrolet and they diagnosed the problem as a defective fuel pump housing and estimated the replacement of the fuel pump to be about $1,200. However, I went to the Chevrolet forums on the internet and found hundreds of identical problems reported to gm by users, but gm has taken no action to correct this dangerous fire hazard. The complaints begin in 2012 when the cars were only 3 years old and continue to be filed. I contacted gm and was simply told "the car is out of warranty". There have been announced recalls for other gm vehicles with the same fuel pump and problem and this vehicle should have been included. Please have these vehicles recalled before a family departs tis earth in a ball of flames because of the uncaring attitude of gm. Folsom Chevrolet, 916-985-5600, has diagnosed my my vehicle and can provide more information and details. But for this problem to have been reported in so many vehicles over so many years and gm to have ignored it is a serious issue and I believe one that only your agency can address.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that fuel was leaking from the top of the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,586.
Check light with evaporative leak at less than 5 years and approx 97800 miles. Dealer replaced heavily corroded fuel pump module, and a week later the fuel tank itself, also due to heavy corrosion. Dealer provided discounts and free loaner, I have no complaint with dealer. My complaint is with Chevrolet for not properly designing these parts which were heavily corroded in less than 5 years. I am out a substantial sum, about $1600, and have looked online and this is not an isolated instance. A fuel or vapor leak is certainly dangerous and I assume is not in compliance with federal emissions regs. I have contacted Chevrolet and they will not even respond to email. I was hoping for some compensation as I am a longtime/multi chevy owner. While not an immediate safety issue, it seems a fuel leak is possible with this problem, and I wanted to log a complaint so NHTSA can determine if a manufacturing/design defect exists. I don't believe I have the only Malibu with this problem. Thanks for your time.

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start and the security warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was diagnosed or repaired, but the failure recurred numerous times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.
While driving down the road on 7/10/16 my 2013 chevy Malibu lost power, engine light and traction control light came on and went from 55-60 mph to 20 mph. When trying to accelerate more the car could shake violently. After stopping and turning the car off it would not restart. The car was towed to kerry Chevrolet in alexandria, ky. After diagnostic testing they determined that the fuel pump needed replaced. On 8/10/16 while driving down the highway while in vacation in florida the car again started to lose power, the engine began to slip or miss and jerk. Again engine light came on. Car died three times while on the road trying to get it to a safe place for a tow truck to tow it. It was taken to a dealership and the cam shaft sensor was replaced. Car continues to hesitate and miss.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu classic. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning and was unable to be restarted. The security pass lock and anti-lock warning indicators randomly flashed intermittently. The vehicle began to stall at random. The vehicle was diagnosed by a mechanic who stated that the fuel pump regulator failed. The vehicle was repaired, but continued to stall. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
There was a recall on fuel system my engine light is on and had it diagnosed and its reading I need a fuel pump cant understand why when work was already done sometimes when I accelerate to 25-30 stutters and putts.
Purchased a used 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. Very shortly after I could notice a strong odor of gas coming from the rear of the vehicle after driving it. I took it to a mechanic who removed the fuel tank and discovered that a plastic feed line on top of the fuel pump module had a severe leak. I contacted gm in regard to the fact that this specific issue has been recalled on the exact same year, make, and model as my vehicle. I was told that my VIN was not included in the recall was offered no additional resolution or support. My concern is that the only vehicles covered under the warranty were those bought and sold or registered in "warm weather" states, but kentucky has 100 degrees very humid summers. It's is considered part of the south , a region known for being very hot in the summer. Additionally the driver side door lock actuator and rear passenger door lock actuator do not work under power. The only work manually.
Upon entering the back passenger side seat of my daughter's car, I noticed a strong fuel smell. Upon returning to the car, I noticed the strong fuel smell outside the car, too. When we started looking around under the car, we saw fuel leaking onto the parking lot. The car has 68,000 miles. The independent garage she took it to said the plastic part of the fuel line was leaking and replaced the fuel line assembly and fuel pump. A $740 repair for a young woman in her first job after graduating from college. We also own a chevy cobalt, which gm has issued a recall in warm weather states for this very issue. I called gm and a vice president told me this wouldn't be a covered repair. I shudder to think what would have happened if a cigarette had been thrown down by her car. She did take a picture, which I will get to upload.
On 11/07/15 my Malibu failed smog check due to p0013/p0014 codes & liquid fuel leak check. Technician said it was obviously gas leak & need to fix right away. I drove & left it to my mechanic shop the same day (Saturday pm). He said trace of fuel leak is coming from top of tank, and he took down the tank to check fuel line and pump. I called gm to find out safety recall on my Malibu & also asked him for help to locate the leak as the problem might be similar to other gm cars. Gm said my Malibu is not under fuel leak recall like some other gm cars and he didn't know easy way to locate gas leak, but offered me free tow to gm dealership. I told gm my Malibu is inside my mechanic shop and he already working on it so I can't tow it out from his shop. My mechanic replaced the whole fuel pump assembly (leak was from plastic line connection to fuel pump) and repaired also the other codes. I called back gm and discussed to her(cathy)the safety issue of presence of gas leak can cause an explosion even in minor accident,or even just park inside my garage, the accumulation of gas vapor can result in explosion since my gas furnace in the garage which is just nearby the car, is always being used at night. She said nothing gm can do since the car was already repaired and gm can't reimburse my repair cost since my Malibu is out of warranty already. Under recall or not, under warranty or not I think a responsible company should at lease investigate the cause of gas leak in car to find out the problem and corrected it, improved the materials or design in their future cars. They don't have to wait to find out that lives were lost due to gas leak defect that could have been corrected sooner. If they want me to bring the fuel assembly parts to dealership (which I suggested to cathy) for investigation of possible material or design flaw, just let me know. Thank you.
Fuel pump leak. Noticed strong gas smell that only increased as time passed, driving and parked. Fuel pump needs to be replaced. Have noticed this is a common problem in this vehicle. Seriously needs to be investigated.
There is a gas leak at the fuel pump. This is a fire hazard due to the large amount of gas vapors. This is noticeable any time it is parked after it has been driven.

I feel there is a serious issue with the 2011 chevy Malibu fuel system which may be causing the engine to stall, fail while in motion, or just won’t start at all. . . . . This has been an ongoing issue for my vehicle since sept 2014…. My vehicle is out of warranty and has been towed to the local dealer many times for what seem to be the same issue. When vehicle arrive at dealer, it seems to work just fine which make makes it harder to detect the issue. My vehicle will be at the dealer weeks at a time to get “I don’t know what the problem is” or “bring back when problem worsens”…. In trying to get to the bottom of the issue my car has had the relay switch replaced twice, the junction block assembly replaced, several recalls repaired in between, and now the fuel pump which was replaced in may 2015. As of today, June 23rd 2015, my car is still doing the same exact thing as before. Starting on minute, doesn't start the next or just stop while in motion. There's a serious issue somewhere and I’ve spent way too much money to be getting the response "I just don’t know" which isn't the answer.

Fuel pump failed(stopped working completely) while parked at the community center. Luckily I was not driving when this occurred. This is as serious an issue as the ignition switch problem if not more so. I,see more complaints about the same problem, and they are driving at the time of failure. Cars should not be having this many fuel pump issues at the time they are occurring. The problem is compounded when the vehicle runs poorly and is misdiagnosed for another problem and unnecessary repair. Please make gm acknowledge this problem.
I tried to start my car yesterday morning after having it only sit for an hour when the car would crank but not start. It seemed as if the car was not getting fuel and less than 3 weeks ago had a new fuel pump fixed on it because of this same issue. As I stated before, the car would crank but not start. I had it towed to the local chevy dealership and they were unable to find anything wrong with the car and had it starting and running every time they tried to diagnose the problem. After doing research online, it appears this is a common problem with chevy Malibu's as it deals with an error in the anti-theft device for the car and deals with the passlock system. This is an inconvenience for owners of chevy Malibu's and is such a common problem it needs to be fixed by the manufacturer or this vehicle.
