Chevrolet Malibu owners have reported 8 problems related to transmission gear indicator (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Malibu based on all problems reported for the Malibu.
The console transmission gear selection indicator does not illuminate the shift position selected. I have been driving on the highway when the gear selection illumination goes off and I no longer have gear selection access nor acceleration control. I have had to dangerously roll off the highway into a safer place to attempt to restart the vehicle. After a few attempts the illumination returns and I have control again. This has happened randomly and I've tried to get help from dealership and gm but everyone that I've spoken to does not acknowledge this recall. I will attach a copy of the recall for a better understanding.

When placing the car in park to shut off the vehicle, a message appears stating "action required" "shift to park. " the car is in park. Shifting in and out of park does not solve the issue. This intermittent problem occurred over about 3 months. Have to turn off lights manually or they won't go off. Dash light remain on longer than usual. Car battery finally died. Replaced the battery/ problem persists. When getting out of car and closing doors, horn honks 3 times. Remote not detected when getting in car again to go somewhere. Problem started shortly after warranty expired. Took to dealer, courtesy Chevrolet. Was told while the problem was not "common" it was a "known" issue. Never suggested this was something to look at any other time the car was in for service. Had to replace the shift gear. Cost $450 initially, but after complaining, they took off about $100. Was told that this is not covered by power train warranty even though NHTSA defines power train as including "shift lever/gear control and indicator devices. " there is a TSB out on this problem and many NHTSA complaints as well as Chevrolet message boards. Car has only 16,000 miles on it.

Gear shift indicator failed again. It was fixed under a previous recall back in July 2014. Also there is an airbag light that has began to display, but chevy states that the recall covers 2008 impala, not the Malibu models.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the vehicle did not exhibit any failures before the recalls were performed for NHTSA campaign id numbers: 14v252000 (electrical system , electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control) and 14v224000 (power train). The contact was also included in a third safety recall but was unable to confirm if the manufacturer performed the recall for NHTSA campaign id number: 14v153000 (steering). The contact stated that after the repairs, the key was difficult to remove from the ignition, various warning lamps illuminated and the gear lights did not illuminate for the gear box when the driver changed gears. The vehicle was taken back to the authorized dealer and the contact waited for longer than two weeks for the vehicle to be further inspected and diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

Gear shift problem. Tried to place car in park and gear shift stayed in drive, although gear shift indicator on dashboard showed otherwise. Stuck in drive and could not shift it out. With foot on brake pedal I called Chevrolet dealership for advice. They advised me to put emergency brake on to shut car off, and call for a tow truck.

Safety incident:transmission gear shift indicator setting: parked in tom thumb grocery store parking lot. Nose to nose with another vehicle (with no parking curb between). Incident: I started the car and the car began to creep forward, while still in park. I immediately turned off the ignition. I restarted car. The same thing happened again. I turned off the ignition. I started car a third time, this time with left foot firmly on brake, and my right foot ready to use gas pedal. I put car into reverse and the car still inched forward. I turned off ignition and put on emergency brake. By now, there was very little room left between my car and the one parked across from it. So I gave up and called for a ride. Several hours later, a friend drove my husband to the car. There was no longer any car parked across from ours, so he felt it was safe to try starting it again. This time, the car started up normally. This incident is intermittent. We drove the car to the dealership and they looked it over and said they could not duplicate the issue. Since recall #09077a: f/cmvss was performed on the car, they would do nothing. They would not redo the recall again. Gm would not allow them to do anything unless they recreate the incident again. They said gm has tied their hands and they would not do anything because of liability issues and fears. We contacted gm and they created a case stating that we had a very good case and that this was a safety issue. After a few days we were contacted by gm and that, since it cannot be duplicated, they will not do anything until it happens again. I expressed our safety concerns. The gm representative said, if it happens again, I suggest that you have the car towed in. I completely understand your concern, but gm will do nothing until it happens again. ¿ what if it happens again and someone gets hurt, either the driver or a pedestrian? what if the car gets damaged or another vehicle when it occurs again?.
