After reading other comments, I have to laugh. Why can't they fix this with so many complaints. The turn signals just stopped working one day. Three days later they worked. Then a few days after that they stopped working again and then just seemed to work when they wanted to. Took it in to jimmie johnson Chevrolet when the signals were not working. Picked up the car to hear they could not find a problem. Sure enough the signals were working. That lasted about a week before the turn signals stopped working again. Since then, two more times to the dealership with pretty much the same result each time. Now I notice if the weather is very warm, the turn signals work more part time and while it is cool they don't work at all. Now, I have read your comments here and began playing with the hazard flashing button. If I press the button on the upper right, the turn signals work. I now have at least a little more information to take to jimmie johnson Chevrolet. Maybe this will strike some sort of recognition to the problem. Thank you everyone for writing your comments.

The drivers side turn signal bulb keeps burning out. I have replaced the bulb twice but it continues to burn out. There are many other complaints about this issue.
My 16 year old daughter was stopped at a four way intersection. As she proceeded to turn, she lost her ability to steer the car. She was able to avoid hitting another car and get her car to the side of the road. She noticed there was a yellow dash board light that came on when she lost the steering but no prior warning of any issues or warning lights prior to loosing the steering on the vehicle. Once she got to the side of the road, her four way emergency flashers would not work. My husband went to pick her up. He restarted the car and the steering worked fine for him. There was no warning lights indicating any problem on the dash board. We brought the car to our mechanic he could not get the problem to resurface. He did note that the directional turn signals seemed to be "messed up" and he changed the light bulbs. When she lost her steering a second time we had the vehicle towed to a different mechanic who told us this was a chronic defect issue with this make/brand of vehicle and that it needed a new electronic component in the steering column which would cost us $900. 00. I researched this information on the internet and found that there are thousands of complaints for this very issue. It occurs at different amounts of mileage. It occurs on the vehicles when they were purchased brand new and purchased used as in our case. This is not your normal wear and tear type of vehicle issue. This is a significant safety issue which is an engineering/design flaw in the vehicle. I have called the gm customer service line. Our case # is 71-127-262-2441. We now have to bring the car to our local chevy dealer and they have told us that it could cost way more just to diagnose the problem than to repair it. Unbelievable. . . Please help look into this safety issue as my daughter could of been killed herself and or could have caused injury to someone else without any forewarning.

Turn signals work on occasion this car only has 42,000 original miles on it and turn signal problem began at 36,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the passenger side turn signal failed. The contact mentioned that after inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the bulb had overheated and caused the material of the casing to melt. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 95,000.
Front headlamps and turn signal bulbs are having to be replaced around every 6 months. Using bulbs specified by the owner's manual. Plastic orange bulb casing has holes melted on the top and warped.
Turn signals just randomly work when they want to. Had it to the garage recently and asked why they didn't work right, didn't get much of an answer. This is a real safety issue and in doing my research, I'm not the only one with this issue.
On three seperate occasions over the past year I would hear a loud chime and my power steering would go out in my 2004 Malibu maxx, making it very difficult to drive. Each time this has occured, I would turn the car off and restart it which would resolve the power steering problem. Initially, I took the car to a mechanic who said there were no leaks in the power steering system and it must have been an electronic problem. I chalked it up to old age (for the car) and continued to drive the car with care. My wife has not been able to drive the car since this happened because she could not control the car if the power steering goes out. Recently I heard of a recall on t. V. Regarding my year, make, and model. The recall description fit my experience with this car. I contacted the gm dealer (sweeney Chevrolet in boardman ohio) and was told 'there had not been a recall on my car as of yet'. They went on to say that if I wanted it fixed, to bring it in and pay out of pocket. I would later be reimbursed by gm if, in fact, there was an eventual recal. My complaint is that I don't have $500-$1000 for a repair that I may not get reimbursed for. It is obvious that my car should be covered by this recall that was announced nationally on t. V. Is there anything that can be done so that gm can be made to fix this car before it causes an accident? additionally, I have been brushed off by them regarding the turn signals since this car has been under warranty. I have replaced over 100 bulbs since this car was new. They overheat and melt the surrounding materials. I have already replaced the entire headlamp assembly, to no avail. I now drive this car without a left front turn signal because it will burn out the bulb within a day or two of replacing it. I'm not sure if this has been brought to the attention of gm in the past, but it seems to be a fire hazard.
Turn signals burning so hot they explode, and melt not only housing for bulb, but also the socket in order to replace bulb is melted too. There needs to be a recall on this as I have found over 200 other complaints of people having the same issue!.
Both the front turn signal amber bulb housing keeps melting to the bulb and also the light sockets , oem and after market ones.
My 2005 Malibu maxx indicated that a turn signal bulb was out and when I went to replace the bulb I noticed, not only that the bulb itself was significantly burned at the socket, but also that the blinker plastic was substantially melted. I checked the other side of the car and even though that bulb is still functioning, the plastic blinker housing is starting to melt on that side as well. Clearly the bulbs are burning way to hot to be melting the plastic housing and I would assume since the bulb itself was burned that this is a larger issue of both potential fire risk and now water damage since the blinker housing is compromised.
Tl- the contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the turn signals failed to engage. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 130,000. Kmj.

I purchased this vehicle very used at 143xxx miles, from a "reputable" dealer. I got a tune up as well as an oil change, standard used car purchase procedure. My dad initially brought to my attention that while driving my fuel gauge dropped down to e, the low gas light lit up and the check engine light came on. A local auto parts store said I should use a fuel injection kit for the check engine light. Now I have 146xxx miles and it happens every single time I get gas. It's nerve racking because I do drive frequently and my main concern is how much gas do I have? I came across a guy that works at a different auto store and he said it's probably my sender unit for my gas tank, which should cost about $300 to fix depending on where I take it. My next set of issues is my horn, I was unaware that it didn't work upon purchasing until I went to honk it and nothing happened. I took it to midas and they replaced the fuse. After driving it home the horn stopped working again. I heard it's just some wires touching but nobody does electrical work. Today, a friend asked if my turn signals were working. I said they did and he said they were burnt up, plastic and all. I looked and sure enough they were melted and the light itself was black on the inside and it looked like it's on the verge of shattering. He asked if there were recalls on anything with this car, I told him I called a local chevy dealer and the guy insisted otherwise. Now, I checked this website and both the gas and lights are on a list of recalls. Apparently, not all dealers know half the information they should for concerned drivers.
2005 chevy Malibu maxx front headlight turn signal bulb melted the housing surrounding the bulb with correct bulb replacement. Bulb keeps burning out and am concerned that this melting will result in safety issues or further damages to the headlight housing.

Turn signal arm does not stay in place when signaling to turn. Also the turn signal arm when it does stay in place it will not return to normal position/turn off signal by itself after making a turn. When turning the steering wheel it makes popping noises. Door locks on all doors stay either in the "lock" or "unlock" position at all times. One of the rear passenger door lock has been replaced at the dealership for $300. 00 and the door lock still fails. The only way to unlock the passenger doors is to do it manually and climb over the seats. The driver door has to be unlocked with the key and manually locked when exiting the vehicle.
The turn signals on my 2001 chevy Malibu stopped working then they started working again they seem to be intermittent and sometimes pushing the four way flasher will make them work again its a constant problem and never knowing when your turn signals will work is very annoying and quit dangerous.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while the cruise control was engaged at 75 mph it suddenly disengaged and caused the vehicle to lose speed. The contact did not apply the brakes in order to disengaged the cruise control system. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic who stated the brake lights malfunctioned and caused the cruise control to disengaged due to the brake lights illuminating. The mechanic replaced numerous fuses in the vehicle as well as re-calibrating the electrical system; however, that did not remedy the issue. The contact stated the turn signal malfunctioned as well. The failure mileage was 148,000.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the left turn signal failed. The contact would try to activate the signal but it would not engage. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, who stated that the bulb and the circuit board needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 141,000.
Passenger side front turn signal bulb burns out frequently. It also will work one day and suddenly stop working the next day, then work again later without having done any intervention at all. If I wiggle the bulb just right within the socket, I can get it to work. Something as simple as running into a pothole can make the bulb unit work or cease working.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that while parked, he noticed that a hole was melted into the amber turn signal headlight lens, exposing the housing unit. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
Front turn signal bulbs (left and right) have melted the plastic housing surrounding them. Bulbs burnout easily. Evidence of melted plastic is a concern for other electrical problems.
Turn signal bulbs are being melted by defective sockets!!! need replacement.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the third brake light illuminated erroneously and failed to illuminate during deceleration. In addition, the driver¿s side turn signal, driver¿s side brake light, and instrument panel gauges malfunctioned intermittently. The electronic stability and traction controls also failed while driving various speeds in cold weather. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 40,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger side turing signals continued to burn out. The contact stated the turn signal bulbs would fail immediately after they were replaced. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The test results showed a defective headlight assembly. The dealer suggested that both headlight assemblies be replaced. The contact did not have the headlight assemblies replaced. The failure mileage was 86,987.
The front driving lights and turn signals blow out consistently, usually damaging the socket in the process.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While parked, the contact noticed that the front passenger side headlight was burned out. The contact replaced the bulb but the headlight burned out a second time. The contact later noticed that the turn signal light wires were melted into the bulb socket. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing where the mechanic advised the contact that the head lamp assembly would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000. Kmj.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger side turn signals failed. The contact stated that the lenses were melted on both sides. The contact replaced the lenses three times in the last nine months. The contact stated that the connection for the light bulbs were burned out but the light itself continued working. The fuse for the light bulb had not failed. The failure mileage was 84,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.
Right front signal bulb socket and bulb over heating (melting) and resulting in inoperative front turn signal. Repeatedly occurring - having to remove melted plastic and replace bulb. 4 times since first occurance.
In both front headlight assemblies, there is an amber plastic cover which covers the bulb that is always on, as part of the regular running lights, and also for turn signals. The light has burned a hole, about 1 1/4 inch in diameter, in the top of the amber lens. The edge of the lens is black all around from the burning. Is my car unique? have there been any other complaints? and most important, is there any danger of a fire starting?.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the turn signals were in operative. The wires also began to melt the bulb, causing the left and right turn signals to fail. The dealer was notified but denied any assistance with repairing the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was unavailable. The VIN was unavailable.
