Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 16 problems related to battery (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
: the contact stated while attempting to start the engine, it would not start. Upon initial inspection under the hood, the positive post of the battery was completely separated. The contact placed the post back into the battery, but the problem persisted. The manufacturer was notified. Updated 10/25/2006 - when the battery connection failed the green light, indicating a good battery, was on. The gauge was reading 14, the same as withthe new battery.

Battery leaked battery acid to the point that the post completely detached itself from the battery unit. When explained to dealership was told that they see this problem very frequently with these vehicles. This left me stranded with no power. If I would have been actually driving when the cable disconnected it could have caused serious problems.

On July 22, 2005, I paid the dealer $615. 74 to replace a shorted air pump. I brought it in since the light gauges were turning on. The "check engine" lighted on and off. One week later, the a/c stopped working. The dealer charged me $105. 19 for the diagnosis. On Aug. 10, I paid another shop $852. 08 to replace the a/c compressor. On Aug. 30, my s-10 stalled and hasn't worked since then. A mechanic said the engine has to be replaced (another $3000 +) due to overheating of the radiator. There was no prior indication that the radiator was leaking or heating except when the light gauges were turning on in July. I bought this truck brand new in 2000 and have spent over $7000 in repairs and regular maintenance since then. The battery acid has leaked. Brake pads keep wearing out. Several air injection malfunctions and pumps have been replaced. I've purchased at least 2 sets of tires. It has less than 72,000 miles.

Passlock failed on several occassions. Dealer repaired each time at no charge(warrenty) brakes failed before 15000miles, had to replace both front rotors. Dealer refuses to acknowledge any fault or reimbursement. We beleive that since the millage is so low, the dealer should reimburse us for the repairs.

Automatic transmission cooler broke while driving and contaminated other components within the engine compartment. This made driving and gear changing difficult. Dealership will replace all contaminated components. The "service engine soon" light illuminated so the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. The consumer had the radiator flushed at 550 miles and the engine continued to run rough. On one occasion, the consumer started the engine and it lunged forward almost knocking him to the driveway. The service manager agreed that the radiator may be defective. The battery was replaced, the instrument panel cluster was replaced because it had shorted out.

This is the 2nd s-10 series Chevrolet truck I have owned in the past 4 years and the same problems associated with this make and model are still present with my newer one. The most particular one is the leaking engine oil lines, which is a wide spread issue with the gm s-10 family (3 week back log just to get the parts). I'm also a member of a mailing list associated with the s-10 series trucks by gm and it contains well over 200 members most of which have experienced identical problems with this particular make/ model. I'm not in any way, shape or form dissatisfied with the dealer here in virginia that has performed any of my repairs and I'm also not dissatisfied with the dealer I purchased the truck from when new. Per the on-line NHTSA home page it states that it is not necessary to receive numerous complaints on a vehicle to have the NHTSA investigate. However, if action is not taken to resolve this obvious flaw in the design of gm's s-series line up I fear other hard working citizens who purchase this vehicle will also have to be subjected to the well known (but not documented?) problems associated with it. If necessary I can provide documentation for all the repairs I have been unlucky enough to encounter. I can also encourage others on the mailing list to file similar complaints here until the necessary people needing to be involve force the manufacture to issue a recall to fix this ongoing design flaw. This design flaw has cost many of us out pocket expenses and time on what should not be consider a normal part of regular maintenance on a vehicle. I appreciate your time and cooperation on this and hope we can work together to expedite a solid solution that would re-establish the consumer's faith in the gm product. Please feel free to contact me for any further details in regards to my complaint. Best regards, jerry kocher email: jerrykocher@home. Com.

Ac delco battery came original with the vehicle, leaked acid onto brake line which cause no braking ability, almost resulting in a crash. Dealer replaced battery. Please provide further information.
When the problem with the cooling system first came up the SUV was I thought over heating a bit I called the dealership and they told me not to worry about it as that was nornal for them in hot weather. The SUV broke down in springfild mo , we manged to pull into a shop ,they said the damage was to great to repair without costing at least 2000. 00, and even then there was no way to know what damge was done to the SUV. They did however give me a service bulletin which listed my problem. It seems gm has known of this problem for at leart 4 years. Yet when I called the dealerships with this very (I learned later) common problem noone wanted to admit they had even heard of it. Even after I read the number to them they still acted as if they had never heard of the problem and in fact didnot know what I was talking about. They did after seveal phone called and agree to fix the problem, however they also admit that there is no way to know what type of damage if any was done to engine tranmission or heating and cooling sytems.
