Ignition Problems of Chevrolet S10

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet S10. The contact stated that the ignition key failed to release from the ignition switch. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The steering column multifunction switch (hazard) has stopped functioning causing a cascade failure to braking system lights, dash lights and ignition.

I had a p0300 code which is a random misfire code after replacing all the parts that I was told that give this code I still had the problem. After doing some in depth research I found that gm had purchased defective distributor drive gears that were not hardened properly causing them to wear out. The knock sensor would pick up this wear and the computer would retard the timing and cause crossfire or a spark jump that caused the distributor cap to prematurely burn out. Gm new about this problem and never did a recall on this. I spent a lot of money on parts I didn't need if I would have known what the root cause of the problem was this. Information needs to get out to thousands of people that are chasing this p0300 code on gm vehicles. My vehicle is a 97 S10 4. 3 vortec. When the computer kicks this code out the engine skips off idle and the vehicle shakes and stumbles. After replacing the distributor that had a new drive gear the vehicle runs like new again and no codes are set.

The vehicle does not start easily, it takes a couple of tries after it has been sitting.

While driving at any speed vehicle will intermittently shut off, and everything in vehicle will lock up. Contacted dealer.

While driving at any speed and without warning vehicle would suddenly lose power and stall. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information.

Electrical/ at times it will not start,engine turns over but no fire, fuel,ect. 30min later it starts. Engine/ burning 1qt. Of oil per 1,000 miles, dealer knows, at this time nothing done,dealer states defective oil passeges.

Dealer cannot find out what is wrong with vehicle. While driving just shut down, there was a short in ignition .

Approx 5min of driving at residential speeds engine would cut in and out as if running out of gas. The fuel gauge registered obout 1/3rd full. First trip to the dealer found two trouble codes: sp0440 & p0171. Was told to tighten gas cap and return if proble persists. With full tank of gas and at highway speeds engine cut out and back in causing quite a jolt. Problem continued especially when accelerating. Back to dealer (one week after 1st visit) to find out fuel pump needs replacing. Four months out of warranty, but low mileage, so I complained to dealer. "goodwill" replacement by mfg although out $220 for 2 trips into dealer for problem solving.

While traveling at various speeds vehicle shuts off without any warning.

While driving at 45 mph clutch cable broke without prior warning. Also, wire harnees shorted out/ brakes are working intermittently/ there is some type of knocking noise within the vehicle, and the left coil spring had to be replaced.

2/25/99 truck was taken to serra chev in jackson for clutch adjustment, smell of burning odor, drivers door hard to shut, drivers seat belt locks up on straight and level. 3/1/99 engine quit while driving 35-40mph. Towed to serra Chevrolet. Wire was found burnt at trans and dist. 3/6/99 truck again quit while driving at approx. 30 mph in 2nd gear. Tires locked up and truck coasted to stop. This is a 4 lane,55mph highway. Was nearly hit by vehicle behind. Lost all power including steering. Truck is again sitting at serra Chevrolet here in jackson. This vehicle needs immediate recall for smell of something burning and twice for shutting off while driving, before it causes a serious accident.

While driving along truck will shut off without warning. I have been in heavy traffic once when this happened lucky no accident. Most of the time it will start back up after ya let it set but there have been times where had to have truck towed to shop. They are working on the problem and the same dealer has another s-10 same year same motor doing the same thing.

Ignition leads failed.

Plug wires failed. Nlm.

Purchase truck new on eight occasions the service engine light comes on and truck stalls. Tt.

Was driving on interstate when vehicle would stall out. Would have no warning a problem would happen. Changed fuel but problem still exist. The problem is intermittent. Have not been to dealer.
